Disappointed - Not as good as the reviews had made out

Staying in Hualien for three nights we chose to come here based on the rave reviews on happy cow. I was disappointed, the price was good and there were plenty of options but the food wasn’t very tasty, it was rather bland and greasy. Still it was a good price and there were lot of options, it just wasn’t for me.

Amazing

Would have eaten here every night if we could have, you pay 200 for a plate and eat what you want or pay by weight for take out. Go early- theres lots of seating but was about half full not long gone opening, plus the food is hot and fresh then, however they do constantly replenish. there is a huge variety and everything we had was great, free hot drinks, couldnt recommend it more. Local place but they speak enough english at the till to get by.

Pros: food , price

Delicious Vegetarian/Vegan Buffet

Conveniently close to Hualien Station and has a great variety of food in the buffet. Dumplings, noodles, soups, desserts, and some kinda currys. Tried this two times when I was there and they had a slightly different menu every time.

Pros: Good quality and quantity. Worth the price.

best dumplings ever - be prepared to overeat

This all you can eat buffet was so good I still dream of it. You pay 200 twd and you can eat as much as possible.
The dumplings were absolutely awesome and the other dishes were great too. We didn’t eat the ice cream because it didn’t look cruelty free. But there was no egg or milk in the other dishes so save for us. If you are in Hualien you have to go there.
A lot of people go there to eat so be prepared and arrive early (from 5-6)

Pros: delicious , all you can eat , dumplings

Cons: non vegan ice (I guess)

rescued us from starving

Arrived in Hualien in the afternoon and was starving because I did not have the time to fill up my belly yet.
The place was closed but after showing our puppy eyes to the owner she opened up the buffet and let us eat.

Great variety of food and everything was very tasty (a bit cold, but then again, we ate the lunch leftovers)
The dishes weren't too oily or too salty and there was enough variety of vegetable dishes and carbs (sushi, sandwiches, rice, noodles etc.)

Highly recommend this place.
Came back the next day for a proper dinner.

Pros: variety , cheap (payed by weight), excellent staff

Tasty and cheap buffet

Great place to try a variety of Taiwanese food. The only thing I saw that wasn't vegan was some ice cream bars in the freezer (they also had vegan popsicles). It is Buddhist vegetarian which means no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, onions, or garlic, so I'm not sure about these reviews saying it is not vegan ... Anyway, it's really cheap with some very tasty food. I came here several times during my two weeks in Hualien so I also know that they have good variety day to day.

Pros: All you can eat, Dirt cheap, Huge variety

Cons: May not be 100% vegan but who knows???, Pretty crowded, you may be seated with strangers

Delicious and good variety

I went there with Taiwanese friend who asked the staff about the presence of eggs and milk, and it seems everything is vegan there now ? Can't be 100% sure especially with fake meats though.

Good variety of tasty dishes, many options to eat whole foods that are safely vegan (brown rice and beans, raw salad bar, greens, roasted sweet potatoes...), friendly staff, not really english speaking but you can manage by choosing only safe options. Definitely one of my favorite in Hualien, plus vegan health food stores has good products.

Lots of food and options.

Nice vegetarian buffet.
Although it doesn't express which food is vegan, I think most of the dishes are easy to target as vegan or vegetarian.

Pros: Lots of all you can eat food., No English spoken staff.

Cons: It doesn't says which food is vegan.

Simply Horrible...

I've been there today and I have to warn you all that they are not vegan friendly. They have a big buffet with all the vegan and vegetarian food all together, without any indication or ingredients displayed, or a sign saying "vegan" or "vegetarian". And when you ask the staff for vegan: "chuen su", they say that all is vegan. I had to ask every staff member many times for every dish in particular and they all said different things about the same dish, no one knew exactly if the food was vegan or not. So, I wasted 20 minutes just trying to figure out with the staff which is vegan and which is not, by asking: "No milk?", "No Cheese?", "No butter?", No eggs?"... Not to mention that no one there speaks English, so, if you don't speak Chinese, good luck. At the end, I talked to the owner who lied that she is not the owner until the staff took me to her. I kindly asked the owner if she could add signs telling us which meals are vegan and which ones are vegetarian and she just said ok but wasn't really interested in my opinion or feelings. If you are a vegan, I recommend that you never visit this place. Have a great day.

Pros: cheap

Cons: no taste, no variety, no respect, no vegan indicators, no English, no knowledge of veganism

All-you-can-eat buffet

This is like a small, humble version of the huge all-you-can-eat buffets found in larger cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung, albeit with fewer options, including no tea or coffee. At 200NT (lunch), it's a good deal for a good meal.

As usual at non-vegan restuaurants in Taiwan, when I told them I didn't eat dairy products a well-meaning staff member took me round and pointed out a few obvious dishes which contain dairy (like cheese pasta) but missed fake meat, mayonnaise dressing and even buttered bread! So vegans need to avoid anything which looks milky, regardless of whatever staff might say.

From my experience, this is the second best option in Hualien after the Loving Hut.

Pros: all-you-can-eat, good range of food (including vegan), close to train station

Cons: difficult to know what's vegan

Affordable and average meal

Affordable meal at the expensive is mediocre selection and average taste. Eat if you have no other option.

hours, etc

When I first arrived in Hualien I was tired, hot and hungry. Instead of waking to Chang Chin Teng, I decided to borrow a bike from my hostel and ride it there. It was easy enough to find, however,
I arrived there at 3pm and they were closed! The lady saw the severe look of disappointment on my face, said, in English, "hungry?" While rubbing her belly and pointing at mine, and made me a take away box. She had me there.

Later that night I decided to try it again for dinner. Dinner was delicious, with lots of variety and all you can eat for $150. You can also select a frozen treat from the giant freezer.

The hours are 11-2 lunch and 5-8 dinner. The shop which sells vegetarian/ vegan foods seems to be open all day.

Great spot to go when hungry!

Awesome array of traditional TW veggie foods. There's a salad bar, hot bar plus desserts. Excellent dumplings, greens and wide array of desserts (mochi, sweet beans to add to porridge). Come hungry as there's so much to try!
