Excellent food, wonderful owners and cooking school! - Edit
Bodhi Tree Café is both an excellent vegetarian & vegan restaurant as well as a cooking school for those looking to master the art of Thai cuisine. The owner of Bodhi Tree, Miss Ubon, was super friendly from the second we stepped into the restaurant – understanding our dietary restrictions and preference for spice levels. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes, both Thai and Western. We highly recommend their Tom Kha soup, papaya & green mango salads, red, green and Penang curries and kaffir lime tea. Although the restaurant can be a little hard to find at night, it was more than worth it.
Read moreWe were very happy with our experience at the Bodhi Tree Café cooking school. The restaurant owner and chef, Miss Ubon, took her time to ask us which dishes we wanted to cook and prepared ingredients accordingly. The 4-hour class started with a visit to a nearby organic farmers market, where we shopped for ingredients and learnt about looking for the best ones. We came back and made Tom Kha, Pad Thai, Khao Soy, Green Curry, and Mango Sticky Rice. Miss Ubon was very patient in explaining and demonstrating how to make each dish while answering our questions. She also shared possible substitutes for ingredients for those not staying in Thailand.
Bodhi Tree Café also regularly hosts events such as yoga classes and sound bowl sessions, building a community of like-minded, health-conscious vegetarians and vegans in Chiang Mai.
Pros: Delicious food, with plenty of vegan options, Friendly owners, Able to learn at their cooking school

Unorganised - Edit
Popped in here after being at the night market on Tha Phae Walking Street nearby. Very convenient location and open pretty late. However, the ambience wasn’t great at night with pretty cold, harsh lighting. I can imagine it’s more pleasant in the daylight.
Read moreEverything on the menu is pretty cheap and can be made vegan. We ordered the veggie burger and papaya salad, the latter of which never arrived. The ”burger” was pretty dry and bland and the bread seemed somewhat stale. The ”home made sauce of the day” that came on the side had a very unusual flavour and we found it inedible. Avoiding the sandwiches and opting for Thai food may be a safer bet (if it ever arrives, that is).
After waiting over 40 minutes we asked about the papaya salad and the owner just casually handed us the bill for the veggie burger without any explanation or apology. Mistakes happen! But the dismissive response makes me think that slow service and forgotten orders might be the norm here.
Pros: Central location 📍 , Everything can be made vegan 🌱
Cons: Serves dairy and eggs 🐣 , Slow and unorganised service 🐢

We also had issues with the sandwiches. Sad to see they haven’t improved. 😕🫂

Nice Breakfast Spot - Edit
Lovely little veg friendly cafe and hotel in the heart of the Old City.
Read moreI came here for breakfast right when they opened and had a great table for people watching outside. They offer western breakfast items including pancakes, eggs, toast, yogurt, and more.
I ordered their Vegan Pancake and asked for a mix of fruit with their homemade passion fruit yogurt. The pancake was very nice and the fruits and yogurt made a great addition to the dish. A small up-charge to combine both styles of the pancakes but it was worthwhile.
Cash only.

“Face” important for staff but not for customers - Edit
Started out good. Felt like stepping back into the 1960’s. Food seemed okay. Then I noticed that my fried rice with vegetables, pineapple, tofu, and mixed nuts was missing the tofu AND mixed nuts. That’s half the dish. The owner, who always had a smile on her face, said she would speak to the cook and get me a new dish. I thought that was fair. She came back with a tiny bowl of nuts, and said “the cook said she put tofu and nuts in your dish a little bit, so here’s some extra nuts. I’ll bring some more tofu.” In order to save “face” for the cook and the restaurant, she insinuated that I’m a liar and a scam artist. The dish lacked those two items. I didn’t appreciate being defamed as a liar and a scammer. The restaurant refused to take responsibility for their mistakes. The food and the service was not worth the insult. If you go here, check your order against the menu and be prepared to be maligned when you point out any omissions on their part. I won’t be back. There are too many good vegan restaurants in Chiangmai. Alchemy is one of them.

Confusion over Vegan - Edit
Food was ok. Was glad it was open so early after getting off the night bus. Service though was bumpy. Had to ask a lot of questions about the food. Dining area was rustic and had flies.

Good menu variety. Sandwiches need improvement though. Dry and quite boring. The raw soups were warm and we were hoping for a cold gazpacho. Would return for Thai food, but skip the sandwiches.

Great Vegetarian Food (No onion or garlic restriction) - Edit
We had great food here several times during our stay in Chiang Mai. It was great to be able to try a vegetarian Khao Soi. They had no problem accommodating our need for no onion or garlic in our food. One of the owners liked our vibe as a couple, so they offered us free dessert if we came back on valentine's day. We did, and they made good on their offer :).

Organic Veg & Vegan - Edit
Lovely little veg/vegan restaurant on a sleepy little soi in The Old City. The food is freshly prepared, organic and EXCELLENT. The staff is so friendly and polite, however their English is a bit limited. Menu is in English, so if don't speak Thai (fortunately I do) be prepared to do a lot of pointing. Also, if making special requests, be prepared for mistakes even if speaking Thai.
Read moreHave had breakfast, lunch and dinner. The vegan fruit pancakes are awesome. This is a fave dining spot in Chiang Mai (among many) and determined on trying nearly everything on the menu.
Added bonus! Although beer is not on the menu, asked for it anyway and immediately someone was on a motorbike and back in a few minutes with the beer I requested!

Wanted to love it but - Edit
It was such a cute location with great options, they even make their own soy milk. But unfortunately I can’t give 5 stars because: they brought the wrong drink, there was no tofu in the “noodle soup with tofu”, food was a bit bland, and the toilet was flooded (you have to take off shoes at entrance, not nice when barefeet!)

Terrible behaviour by the owners - Edit
This review is about my experience with the Bodhi Tree Cafe laundry service.
Read moreThe owners are a Thai woman named Ubon Lotus and her French partner Marc. He is usually working at the cafe while Ubon is there only occasionally. I had brought my laundry there three times. Everything went fine until the day I came to pick up my laundry again (all my underwear) and they could not find it. After searching for it everywhere, they suggested we to wait a few days because it may have been wrongly given to someone else who would hopefully return it. A few days later, nothing had been returned. Then they suggested they look at the camera (CCTV), to see if maybe someone stole it, which took them more than a week for some reason. Every time I came by to ask about the progress, Ubon gave me some vague reason why they need more time to check the tape. When i mentioned about a compensation, she told me they talked to their lawyer and they don’t need to compensate in any way. Ubon then said that they are not even sure if I really brought my laundry to their place as they could not see me on the camera, Marc nodded. This is actually the main reason why I post this story. I had given my laundry personally to Ubon. Yet they were fine to accuse me of lying. Finally, due to my insisting, they gave me a paper stating they are willing to compensate with 1.000 Bahts (on this paper they admitted losing my laundry though…).The cost of the loss for me is around 200 euros, mostly 17 pieces of reasonable quality French underwear from the brand Etam. Needless to say, you don’t buy second hand underwear to make up for a loss.
I also went to the tourist police and made a report (in the attachment), but as I don’t have a laundry receipt, as it is common usage in Thailand, there’s not much they can do. The purpose of this writing is to bring the careless behaviour of Bodhi Tree Cafe owners with their customers to light. Moreover, they showed a severe lack of dignity by going as far as to accuse me of never bringing my laundry there.
Hope this testimony can help future travelers
Cons: Owners and staff ethics
simonesays
Sorry this happened to you! She probably kept that expensive underwear for herself! Similar things have happened to me but I usually got it back...even going into their room and getting it back!
