Pleasantly surprised!

The bar has a great atmosphere, lively with loud music. If you want a more peaceful meal, this isn't the place for you. The food was surprisingly nice, portion sizes were good.
I had the Korean Seitan burger, very filling and full of flavour. The tater tots were wonderful

rough round the edges (still)

I’ve visited Bloc on multiple occasions, and while the menu is decent, there always seems to be an issue. While some nights offer bargain dishes, overall the food quality is inconsistent. On my most recent visit, we ordered the seitan bao buns, which were overloaded with dressings and salad , overshadowing the seitan. Additionally, the Moving Mountains dog arrived with cold chili, possibly due to the 50-minute wait for pre-prepared food. It’s worth noting that this was the first time I experienced such slow service, and it doesn’t reflect poorly on the waiting staff. If you’re headed to a gig, it might be best to explore other dining options.

Great pub/junk food

Almost every meat option has a vegan equivalent so there's loads of choice and never feels like you're missing out. The food is pretty reliably good. Really great spot for a mixed group of vegans and non vegans because everyone can get what they want. Food is generally a mix of hot dogs, burgers, cauliflower wings and general street food like bao buns and tacos.

Pros: Vegan/veggie menu just as big as the meat menu , Tasty, filling food , Great atmosphere and friendly staff

Cons: Can sometimes be a bit slow when it's busy , Can be a bit pricy

Cool dive bar

Loved the dive bar vibe. Food was decent and had a good selection. Friendly and helpful staff.

The hot chocolate was warming and sweet perfect for a cold Glasgow day.

The loaded fries were good really enjoyed the sausage addition.

Expensive

This has been a regular haunt for me over the years but now Bloc seemed to have really upped their prices beyond the quality of their food.

Vegan food is one of the cheapest things to make and Bloc is taking the mickey out of its vegan clientele.

£8.95 for a small loaded fries (which is actually very small); basic chips, a squiggle of mayo, some beans and the worst tasting vegan cheese I have ever experienced, actually tasted like sick. Nevermind £12.95 burgers where you have to pay more for chips.

Ludicrous, will not be back.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Deals throughout the week

Cons: Regular menu expensive, Vegan cheese tasted like sick, Bad live band

They've put effort in

You're handed the menu, the front says "For Meat Lovers" and has 30 or so options. You turn over the menu, it says "Vegan + Veggie" and very surprisingly it also has 30 or so options. It's not just "veganised" things either, they've came up with some cool unique vegan things. Weirdly, the only thing on the "Vegan + Veggie" menu that isn't vegan is the mac and cheese. Also, some of the items on the "Vegan + Veggie" menu have the same name as the meat one so I made it clear I was ordering the vegan one.

I had the "Brukora" which is cauliflower pakora coated in a Irn-Bru based batter. Now, I didn't actually taste any Irn-Bru but it certainly gives it a bizarre look which I appreciated. It tasted very good in general. I also had the large Vegan Chillirama poutine which consisted of chips lathered in chilli and some extras. It too, was very nice.

The portion sizes were very generous. It's rare that I am stuffed after a meal, although I guess I did technically get two main dishes.

It's a very busy place and the atmosphere is a bit disjointed. It feels and looks like "just a bar" but the food is way better than any "bar food" you'd usually get.

I'd definitely go back to try some of the other options and I'd recommend it, purely for the food.

Basement bar restaurant. HUGE vegan menu. More style than flavor in the items we ordered but worth a stop for the sheer variety.

Amazing vegan cauliflower wings and desserts

We love Bloc! The staff are really friendly and we were very impressed by the range of vegan food on offer. It was hard to choose what to eat. We absolutely love the cauliflower wings and this time we got vegan cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding. The prices are great and we will be back ❤️

Great Selection & Affordable

You can’t argue with Blocs prices - they have a great selection of vegan options and you can order a huge amount of food for two people for under £20 and they do weekday deals that can work out even cheaper. The loaded fries are amazing but the burgers are a bit greasy and I’ve tasted better to be honest!

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Cheap and cheerful food, Good hangover food

Cons: Greasy

Great vegan options

Bloc has one on leaps and bounds the last few years and one if the things they really excell at are their vegan junk food options. The burgers are tasty, the chips are perfectly cooked and the staff are always friendly.

Pros: Lots of options, friendly staff, great music.

Cons: Portions can be a little small.

Late-night pizza

Bloc Bar is the place to go during / after a boozy night, when hardly any other place in Glasgow serves food any more. The offer pizza with vegan cheese one topping for 6 pounds and it tastes neither great nor bad - definitely worth the money after enough pints!

Pros: Very late pizza (until 3am), Bargain

Fab creative vegan options

Edit 28/08/17

I've heard Mad Chef no longer works at Bloc, and I'm sorry I hadn't gotten in before now for the vegan breakfast. There wasn't a mention of potato scone on the menu or I'd have asked for another one of those in exchange for omission of mushrooms (my request) rather than a sausage. The black pudding was alright - I've never eaten the meat equivalent - it was a bit like falafel. I'm not much of a fan of Linda McC sausages. The tofu scramble seemed like a packet of silken tofu had been opened + quickly heated in a pot with cayenne pepper. No turmeric, black pepper, kala namak (black salt), nutritional yeast.... the things usually found in a tofu scramble. It was super basic. I know it was only £5 but I'd rather pay £6 for a bit more creation and flavour. I'll go with three stars now as there are other vegan options on the menu which sound promising that I'm keen to go back and try.

...............
(Nov 2016) The chef at Bloc 'Mad Chef' posts often on social media photos and videos of his dishes and it's refreshing to see someone who genuinely seems to enjoy working with food and looking at ingredients as art tools to make creations - when you see the same old, same old menu options, with particularly dire vegetarian and vegan options, you wonder why some people become chefs.

On menu they have a freshly made vegan burger and a couple of hot dogs with all sorts of spices, fruits, and nuts inside and atop. Tonight I got to sample his latest 'Nofu, a blend of chickpeas and tofu, maple syrup, peanut butter, cashew nuts, and spices. SO good. A portion of tofu-not-tofu that satisfies and not the 2 or 3 chunks one usually gets in a noodle dish.

Knowing we'd probably have room for more food we also ordered falafel dogs and chips, which were on their Friday £4 deal. Nothing vegan available to buy as extra toppings - they use butter in their caramelised onions - but we had ketchup and mustard out on the table so that was fine. Would be good if they used a different brand of meatfree mince other than Quorn, allowing their chilli to be suitable for vegans, and vegan cheese available.

Staff were very friendly, attentive, quick, and chatty and it was a great dinner. I can't wait to get back to try their weekend vegan breakfast.

It's usually very busy, booking advised.

Two pizzas for £8.49 with vegan cheese! boom!

We went on a Monday night. Sadly the pasta Mondays deal (pasta for £3) did not have a vegan option. We had two pizzas for £8.49 (before 9pm) which comes with two toppings plus vegan cheese. Thin and crispy. Bargain.

We tried the vegan bean chilli nachos, and the vegan bean poutine (chips in a bowl with vegan cheese, sour cream and chilli)
all good

we were treated to some live music from 10pm by a 4 piece musical combo playing foot tapping tunes.

Pros: cheap! 2 good sized vegan pizzas for £8.95, helpful staff

Cons: Not a totally vegetarian or vegan venue
