One of my favourite places in London

I have been going to Black Cat for years, since it was Pogo Cafe. It was always good, but my last visit after a bit of a gap was better than ever, simple food, but great. Very highly recommended.

Pros: Worker's Co-op, Relaxed atmosphere, Well priced

Scrumptious, filling, affordable

I had heard lots of good things about this place, but my personal experience at the Black Cat exceeded my expectations.
With two friends, I went for lunch, and we got to try their breakfast/brunch menu. We ordered a Breakfast Muffin and two Full English Breakfasts.
The portions were huge and rather cheap compared to London standards, but most importantly, everything was very tasty.
We ended up spending quite a lot of time there until we decided we wanted to try their Polenta Almond Orange Cake, which was very good as well.
From now on, I will recommend Black Cat to anyone looking for a good and affordable meal in East London. See you again soon!

Cute cooperative with excellent vegan options

I’ve been bringing all my guests here when they come to stay with me in London for a few years now and watch it slowly turn into their fave new eatery too. Really non pretentious, well priced food and lovely staff.

Perfect place for laid back comfort food

We loved this laid back place. Easy going ambience and generous portions of delicious comfort food.
We had the burger and a lasagna.

Best Vegan Food in London

I have never had a bad meal here. I love their curry and the Sunday morning brunch (inc. pancakes) are simply heaven.

Pros: Freshly made, good quality food, bio-Cola Floats and milkshakes 😋😋😋

Cons: Portions have a got a little smaller recently , I miss the Vegan bookshop they used to have.

Great food and ethos but portion sizes...

I love the Black Cat. The food is tast an the ethos is great. I had the Fishless & Chips which was very tasty and was also lucky enough to have a taste of the Lasagna Bolognese and some desserts. Everything was really tasty and the portion sizes were decent.
We arrived at 6.30ish and I saw some dishes being served that were quite a bit bigger than the ones we were served as food ran out unfortunately.

Pros: Proper vegan, BYO

Cons: Portion sizes decreased as supply ran lower

Dog-friendly, huge portions, always delicious!

We’ve been coming to Black Cat for years, and the food is consistently delicious and offers great value for money with huge portions. We normally come for the breakfast at the weekend, although sometimes 11am is a bit too late for us. Lunch and dinner are also great - stand outs are the “fish” and chips, lasagna and beef-style burger and chips... the chips are soooo good! A number of times, we’ve come here with dogs and the staff are always so welcoming and ready with a bowl of water - so easy to visit with a four-legged friend. Highly recommend!!!

Pros: Breakfast is delicious, Great value for money - quality and quantity , Staff are really dog-friendly

Amazing food

This place has such a cool vibe with a large, varied, all vegan menu. I’ve tried a few different things and they have all been amazing. My heart belongs to their lasagna! The staff is lovely too.

Pros: All vegan menu, Nice sitting down area, Cheap!

Local, social, vegan food

Went a few times and was always happy. The food is tasty, with good portions, and relative to London, at a good price.
Most important though is the atmosphere, you can really feel that people who work here, and people who eat here, see it as home, and you are a welcomed guess.

Pros: atmosphere, 100% vegan, owned by the workers

Nice lunch, large portions.

We had a nice lunch. Cheap: £8,5 for main dish.
We were too stuffed for desserts, although there were some nice looking cakes at the counter.

It seemed mostly frequented by locals. Tables pretty close together, and when more full, lots of noise, not really relaxed.

Unfortunately the restaurant is not accessible: there was one large step to get in, which made it a bit difficult with wheelchair. Also no accessible toilet.
A pity, since they were closed for renovations earlier. Why not make it accessible at the same time?

My Favourite Place!

@blackcathackney is my absolute number 1 favourite spot 🐱 I have been going as often as possible since moving to London and FINALLY got the their fishless & chips last night! It was absolutely delicious, and my pescitarian pal described it as 'the best fish I've ever eaten' which is probably the best review you could ask for!

Pros: Cheap, Changing Menu , Laid Back

cool place

Always over a workers owned coop. Black cat didn't disappoint with its emphasis on Fairtrade and organic always gonna win my heart.
We were quite late so they were down to four dishes. I had the burger while another had chickpea *tuna* sandwich.
Really good value for London and the food was pretty good.
If your in hackney make it a stop.

Pros: 100%, staff, worker owned

Cosy, comfort food, great value

Delicious comfort food, milkshakes and cakes. It’s cosy and small, but service is very quick and friendly. And great prices and big portions. One of y favourite spots to grab lunch on weekends.

Pros: Service, Prices, Choice for both; more and less healthy days

Cons: Small space fills up quickly

best value lunch in London

I love the food here, huge portions for reasonable prices. Everything I ate here was so good and healthy, lots of veg with all the dishes. The only problem is that seating is disorganised so when it’s busy for brunch on the weekend it gets very frustrating, you queue to order your food first then you wait for a seat. Should introduce some order in there, but any other time it’s chilled.

Pros: portions, prices

Cons: gets too busy

Not the black cat cafe you knew

HappyCow is forcing me to give two stars for a fully vegan place. So be it, but this is not the Black Cat cafe you know form the past, and the owners also distance themselves from it. I would have much more preferred to keep the old style and food choices and staff.
