Good pandemic eating out experience - Edit
Food was excellent. We booked an outdoor table but since there weren’t any available we sat inside by open patio doors. Tables definitely were not 6 feet apart and it felt more full than 35%. Service was extremely slow, but maybe because it was an exceptionally warm night and more peoplw out than normally and they were not prepared or maybe because it’s a small place and cannot fit enough personnel during this excwptional time. I don’t know. What we ate was good and beautifully presented.

Amazing and unique - Edit
Really had a gourmet feel, not the usual Mexican faire, each appetizer and main course were clearly very well thought out, and the freshness and taste shined. We had an appetizer that were like small empanadas which were nothing short of stunning, and another dish I think it was an elote corn dish, with very distinct flavors. Truly a great meal all the way around.

Really good, but jajaja is better. - Edit
It’s hard enough to find good Mexican food in Manhattan (this is coming from a Latinx transplant originally from Southern California) but once you add veganism to the equation, things get even tougher! The first time I went to Bar Verde with my boyfriend, we waited over an hour for our food (and it was not that busy!). The food was good, and the waitstaff was apologetic and gave us free drinks, so we decided to give them another chance. The second time we went, it was amazing! Super fast and friendly service, and the food was even better! I’ve now tried several things for their menu that I loved (particularly the nachos) and appreciate that they take reservations. The location in the east village with outdoor seating is amazing as well. however, if you’re struggling to choose between going to jajaja or bar verde for vegan mex, jajaja is definitely the better option (and their nachos are better...) jajaja tends to have pretty extreme wait times, but I typically get faster more reliable service. this is nonetheless still a great option, especially if you’re in a big group, and I would still highly recommend!

Good for groups! - Edit
I brought a group of 10 here and they handled us very well despite there being a massive heat wave/air conditioners struggling to keep up. We loved all our tacos and the vegan ceviche was interesting! The tortilla chips could be lighter / less dense. Loved everything else including their cocktails!

Amazing food! - Edit
This vegan spot serves absolutely amazing food and drinks! I’d definitely recommend coming here. The only reason I’m giving 4 starts is: the host was a little negative and didn’t give the best impression. Otherwise I’ve absolutely no complaints!

Delicious Food, Fun Atmosphere, Great Service - Edit
My wife and I had tried Double Zero (Italian vegan next door) a few months ago and wanted to check out Bar Verde. We were not disappointed. Surprisingly it was not completely full (though close to) on a Friday night because it was a great experience for us. To start with, the cocktails were exceptional by any standards. I had the Paloma- a simple drink but done well. My wife was more adventurous and had a Mezcalita, which had spiced pineapple, jalapeño and mexcal. I gave it a try and it was smooth and delicious. Then the food. We had the nopales ceviche - great. I had the cauliflower enchiladas and my wife had the flautas. Again - very tasty. The flavors were pronounced but balanced. My wife described it as “clear and fresh”. We liked it better than Gracias Madres in San Francisco.

Excellent Mexican! - Edit
This is honestly some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten (vegan and omnivorous). Not only is is excellently spiced, it is NOT oily or greasy. We had chips & salsas + the excellent sunflower seed spread; tostadas, ceviche, enchiladas and tacos and the churros. Everything was great and the service was attentive and helpful. I can’t wait to go back for brunch...

The food is a bit pricey but the ambiance gives you an upper scale feel. The food itself is excellent I presentation and flavor. There are very interesting taco and enchilada choices. There are also related vegan restaurants right next to this one. Can’t wait to go back!

Upscale - Edit
I should preface this review by saying I don’t have a super refined palate and don’t have lots of experience at higher end vegan places. With that in mind, I would say my experience at Bar Verde was a bit disappointing. We went there for a special occasion and had high hopes. I like the dishes that had huitlacoche, a rare treat. But no dish stood out in particular (perhaps because it was too refined for my tastes?). I also wasn’t blown away by the drinks. Personally, I would prefer something heartier and more comforting, but take that with a grain of salt given what I said at the beginning of my review.

Lupe’s is better - even for vegans. - Edit
Extremely fresh, clean food — but very overpriced. Service is fairly good, but it took us an hour and a half to get out of the place - and we were just about the first people there. If you want vegan Mexican food Lupe’s in Soho has vegan options, and is the best.

Fancy, great food, but not really Mexican atmosphere - Edit
I was very excited to take my Mexican friend to a vegan Mexican restaurant for brunch. We ordered Guacamole to share, which came out very different than I am used to from regular Mexican restaurants, but it was beautifully served and decorated. Scramble tofu a la Mexicana with tomato sofrito, refried beans, sweet chiles and corn tortilla was absolutely phenomenal. We also tried Grilled quesadilla with spicy cashew cheese and salsa verde that was also very good. Then we got Plantain Pancakes served with coconut cream and Vermont maple syrup - it wasn't wow, they felt little dry, but it was little pre-dessert and we like it. We couldn't resist getting Tres Leches - it came out super sweet, but I guess I am not used to sugar that much.
Read moreI have to say all the dishes were beautifully decorated either with fresh fruit or fresh herbs. It looked amazing and overall it tasted really good.
Ambient - the place is fancy, quiet and cozy - don't expect real Mexican vibe, Latin music etc.
Some cons: The restaurant has just one restroom and unfortunately, I had the same experience as when I went to Double Zero, next door. The toilet was dirty, the toilet paper was all over the place. I know, people are pigs, but I would expect from a place like this little different service.
Also for the price, I would expect better service, they could definitely be more attentive (especially when the restaurant wasn't crowded at all at that time).

Gluten-free options available - Edit
Small, relaxed Mexican restaurant with nice ambience, in a nice part of the East Village. We all enjoyed our meals and knew the ingredients would be good quality with no ‘vegan junk’ because it was Matthew Kenney’s restaurant - (if you’re not familiar with him download his short biography on Kindle for holiday reading to find out how he got into first raw, and then plant-based cuisine - an interesting , quick read). He has an Asian and pizza restaurant either side, the pizza one we visited, which was also good. Afterwards you must visit Van Leeuven Artisan Ice Cream just up the road
