After checking all the good reviews and seeing all the mouth watering pics on happy cow (most of them uploaded by the owners itself, to be fair), I went a long way to Ataya with big expectations. The cafe itself has a quite cosy but slightly scruffy feel. There is no proper menu to read and you have to order at the counter (menu on different white boards looked a bit shabby). I ordered an „African plate“ which consisted of potatoes in peanut sauce, LOTS of sliced, cooked onions with a few chick peas and olives in mustard sauce (weird combo to me), some black rice (they were able to sub the couscous, i prefer gf) and a quarter of a Romana salad heart without dressing. Well...the presentation of the food wasn’t appealing to me, especially not after seeing the great pics uploaded to this app. The taste of the dish was ok, but I was missing some fresh veggies. It was extremely onion-and-potatoe heavy. Not really my thing, but others might like it.

We appreciate all the opinions expressed on HappyCow, however, we must object to some of the ideas you’ve put forth. Our café is based in cultural inclusivity, sustainability and the ethical treatment of animals and the environment. Like the food we serve, we have chosen to use organic materials to furnish our café. Our sustainably sourced woods and beautifully pigmented, handmade textiles reflect both our Senegalese heritage and a respect for plastic-free products. The combination of these elements creates an atmosphere of comfort and relaxation unique in Berlin. Also, the dish you’ve labelled as “weird” is called “yassa”. It is a traditional Senegalese recipe which takes 24 hours to prepare properly and is one of our most popular dishes. We add fresh vegetables, dressed very lightly in high quality, organic olive oil to brighten the dish and to compliment its robust flavors. Lastly, most of the pictures of our food are taken not by staff, but by happy patrons.
The world is large and AtayaCaffe is dedicated to reflecting its natural beauty in our cuisine and aesthetic. We are sorry you were unable to appreciate this, and deeply grateful for the community of Berliners that can.

100% Delicious, vegan, and made with love! - Edit
My husband and I went to this restaurant for an early lunch during the week. We both began with ginger tea and shared a croissant. The tea was made with sliced ginger and fresh mint. The croissant nearly melted in my mouth and still maintained its wonderful flakey texture. Amazing. For our main meals, we got one “big breakfast” and the “African bowl.” I loved how everything tasted and I could not help but notice how great I felt during and after eating. It was like being nurtured from the inside-out. Then, we got to have a conversation with the owners! They are lovely people! Please go to this restaurant! You will be so happy you did! It will make your time in beautiful Berlin even better! (Also it’s cash only but there’s an ATM nearby.)

I called in for lunch while visiting Berlin for a few days. I really liked this place, the people in there are pleasant , it’s relaxed and nicely done out inside and the food is really good. I tried the Dakar curry, a mango smoothie and some raspberry cheesecake all were very good. The coffee was also good. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Berlin.

Even my dad, who is not a vegan was pleasantly surprised that their food was sooo tasty.

The portion to price seemed fair here, especially for this level of quality. We got plenty to eat without leaving feeling ripped off. We can't wait to go back! I recommend setting reservations ahead of time if you can because it gets busy. We popped in at breakfast time without reservations and waited for a bit, but boy was it worth it!

This Amazing place was busy even on A week day.
The food we ordered wowed us from the first bite - fresh, tasty, with balanced flavours and generous size. One of my friends I came with us a chef but was seriously impressed.
The environment is adorable. A true sense of a family business. The talented chefs are husband and wife an African-Italian couple .
Everything we had was perfect: ravioli filled with pumpkin,bruschetta with a twist and great Italo coffee with Oat milk.
They only use top selected ingredients and you can Fraser it!

Hidden Spot: Great Vegan Food! - Edit
I've been here many times and really like the owners. Each time I'm so pleased by the tasty/healthy food choices, eclectic mix of music, and cozy spots to relax inside and out. Outside they get the morning and afternoon sunshine, depending on the season and it's a nice place to enjoy a coffee and a delicious apricot filled croissant! I definitely would recommend this place to a friend.
