Late Night Vegan Options - Edit
Clearly labeled vegan options in a low key setting. Affordable prices and late night hours only add to me returning on my frequent visits to SLC for a quick lunch or midnight snack.

Nice spot downtown - Edit
They have a nice vegan section of their menu. Easy and good option when you’re downtown!

Good food, open late - Edit
The empanadas are huge, the arepa are about the size of a burger and a very nice mix of textures and flavors. Will return!

Great vegan empanada - Edit
Not a lot of vegan options, but the vegan empanada is large and absolutely delicious.

Late night food - Edit
Good empanadas for late nights out out on the town. Could be more vegan options- was told sauce wasn’t vegan.

Ok empanada - Edit
I ordered the vegan empanada and Donald Watson. The empanada was the better of the two, in my opinion. I got my order to go, so there was not much interaction with the staff. The inside decoration was interesting.

Bland and low quality - Edit
I was pretty hungry, but I decided to eat something else rather than finish this. I ordered an empanada and the patacon. The cooking on pretty much every ingredient was off to one degree or another. Everything just kind of felt mushy. From the plantains to the avocado. If you had blindfolded me I would have said it was just black beans in there. (there was a bunch of grey spoiled avocado in my empanada.)
Read moreThe flavor was incredibly bland without any of the salsa. Think white bread and black beans with a little sugar. The Patacon suffered the same fate and I fail to understand why it was priced at essentially 3 empanadas since it was essentially the same thing in a plantain sandwich.
A friend of mine recommended this place but I was pretty disappointed - maybe it’s just the vegan items.
I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, and I will never go back. But perhaps I was a fool for thinking black beans, plantains, and avocado in an empanada would be anything more than lackluster.
Pros: Vegan options, They took a stab at a vegan meat substitute , The empanada is cheap
Cons: Bland, Expensive for what it is (minus empanada), Poor preparation and ingredients

Have to appreciate vegan Venezuelan - Edit
Never had vegan arepas so was up for a late night snack the night I arrived in SLC.
Read morePlace was packed, with who seemed like Venezuelans, including families... which is always a good sign.
Was impossible to eat this as a sandwich. Just too packed with juicy things to keep together. Taste was good.
Another review mentioned jackfruit but the staff said they dont use it. Too bad.
Be careful with sauces they give you on side. 2 of the 3 that came with mine were not vegan. Only chilli sauce is. Cholula is also on every table so nobody can complain about bland food.
Food taste was a strong 3.5 but I bumped them up for being a hard to find vegan cuisine.
Cons: uses alot of plastic and paper for dine in

Pretty tasty - Edit
Arempas catered to an event I was at and the food was pretty good. Beans and rice were packed with flavor. Plantains were tasty. I think the vegan “beef” was jackfruit - pretty sweet and not a ton of flavor but it was good and I was happy to see they had it. Good plays to go with omnis.

Backup for vegans - Edit
I speak as a tourist. I was delighted this place has dedicated, on-the-menu options – as it is apparently open late, it would seem to be worth keeping in mind for that reason. This, and the empanada's great value, lead me to give it three stars.
Read moreThat said, there were some oddities. I got the vegan arepa and the vegan empanada. They were both filled with *exactly the same ingredients* and the empanada was bigger than the arepa – but the arepa costs more than 2x as much. Given these circumstances, and the fact that I liked the empanada more, I can see the empanada being a great deal for a vegan looking late night or for a bit of variety.
Both of them were on the bland side, however, and far from imaginative. I did enjoy the plantains in both; otherwise, it was mainly black beans and some avocado. (From the menu, it appears that their several vegan items seem mainly to be rearranging these same ingredients.) The small amount of chimichurri I was given added some flavor and was ok, but did not knock my socks off. None of it was bad, and I do think they made at least the arepa fresh with decent ingredients, but there just wasn't much flavor.
Finally, they use big styrofoam packaging for to-go, which is actually enough to mean I would avoid eating here again. (Not being a local, I don't know how common this is, but I know it's not even nominally recyclable in SLC and that not all places do it.)
