Worth the hype

One of the best vegan restaurants I’ve ever been to, hands down. No matter the night of the week, I recommend getting a reservation. My friends and I didn’t know how popular it was and had to wait almost an hour for a table! So worth it though. The food is fantastic and very well priced.

Delicious Vietnamese style tapas

I love that this place does small plates so you can try a bit of everything. Perfect if you’re with a group of people, or if like me you’re just plain indecisive. We ordered 6 small plates (€3.50 each) to share between two of us and everything came out piping hot, really fresh and PACKED with flavour. Forgot to order rice though, which would’ve gone nicely with the buddha bowl and curry. We definitely could’ve indulged in 1 or 2 more dishes to really fill us up but we were trying not to overspend.
Delicious!! Would happily go back again and again.

Pros: awesome food, restaurant is relatively spacious , fair prices

Cons: strange choice of music - dodgy 00’s pop

Best Vietnam restaurant, that we ever been to

There is a story behind this restaurant: In 1990 was in Vietnam lack of meat. So the people had to find out, how to make thaditional dishes without it. And you can try the result here. And: it is ubelievably good. You will get a small menu and pen, and you have to choose on the menu your selection from big offer of small portions. At the end there are standing many small bowls of inceredibly tasty meals in front of you. And yes, it is not cheap. And you will wait for it. But it is worth it.

Pros: Tasty, concept, Best vietnam food I ever had

Cons: Expensive, You will have to wait

Reservierung auf 2h begrenzt

Fantastisches Essen. Günstige kleine Bowls Reis ermöglichen, vieles zu probieren.
Restaurant sehr voll (Samstagabend). Unsere Reservierung wurde auf 2h begrenzt. Das ist schade, daher nur 4 Sterne

Pros: Große Auswahl, Menü-"Baukasten"

Cons: Reservierung auf 2h begrenzt

Nice place but inconsistent food

I came in for dinner with some high expectations given:
- the amount of hype over this place
- the sheer number of Vietnamese food outlets in Berlin (there are so many! 😱)
- my familiarity with Vietnamese cuisine

For the most part, the food and service was good. I could probably count with both hands the number of minutes it took for our food to arrive after ordering (we ordered 2 mains and 3 small sides in total). The place was warmly lit and had a nice cosy ambience.

I ordered the Bowl of Happiness for myself, and the La Lot (stuffed betal leaves) were stuffed with a flavourful umami mushroom filling and were grilled to perfection. The rest of the bowl featured a good helping of red rice, 3 deliciously chewy and meaty soy [censored]-shaped thingies covered in a sweet chili sauce, and a refreshing salad with sprouted soybeans.

My friend ordered the King Kong Bowl, i.e. green curry with rice and salad. Having eaten at many (omni) Vietnamese places in the city over the last 2 years, his verdict was: "Meh".

I also ordered some small sharing bowls: Buddha Bowl (stir-fried tofu cubes), Goi Du Du (papaya salad), and Bun Bao Taco (Taiwanese-style steamed bun with soy meat and salad). I have to say that these dishes were somewhat forgettable on the whole - the stir-fried tofu was average, the bun was somewhat stale and tough with an OK filling, and the papaya salad had a somewhat tangy dressing with tasty herbs (I tasted perilla which was nice), although it could have been stronger for my tastes.

To drink, I had a Red Sensation 1990 - raspberries, basil seeds, longan, lime, and lemongrass iced tea. 8/10; would drink again.

So would I come again? Maybe, although probably just to taste the La Lot again. Given my experience there I would give it a high 3 - it would be an easy 4 if the music wasn't so loud and the food was more consistent.

Very bad😒EDIT: very good!

My first experience was very, very bad (you can see review below). After a year a friend insisted I try it again. I came back several times after that and it was delicious!😄Try Bowl Of Happiness. It really is a bowl of pure happiness😜I still think stuff could do better at being more friendly tho. They are not bad, but for me, it is a very important part of an experience.

MY PREVIOUS REVIEW: I have no idea why the ratings are so high. I was really excited to go there. The waiter was extra rude, really, he did not come for like half h so I went smiling asking if we can order and he literally screamed at me that he is coming. When he came he was acting like he really hates us. I asked for no napkins not to create waste and I got two napkins just like him trying to tell me that he does not give a crap. Food was madly bad, no taste, not fresh. Maybe it was their bad day, but I will never know as I am not planning to go back.

Great Flavours !

All my vegan friends recommended this restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. We ordered 7 dishes between two of us to share a bit of everything - great flavours and really good price , the whole bill only came to €23! Friendly staff and quick service considering it was busy. I’d definitely visit again for the green tofu curry!

Good but a bit overhyped

I think nearly every vegan I know who has ever been to Berlin has recommended this place, so it had quite a bit to live up to. We went for lunch, the food was OK, but didn't really live up to the hype for me. We got 6 small dishes and everything except the summer rolls had been deep fried and was quite greasy. The service wasn't great either, it took about 30 mins before our drinks arrived while the waiter played on his phone. Maybe we just caught them on an off day. I would probably go back and try the evening menu if I was in Berlin but it wouldn't be first on my list of places.

Hyped, but delivers

Very nice place to get excited about all the different dishes you’re going to get and after finishing them, order some more. It’s quite the buzz outside with waiting in line and people getting stoked. 1990 delivers on that buzz.

Like Vietnamese tapas

@1990veganliving is the kind of place where you go if you want to try everything. With their small bowls that reminds you of tapas, you can order as many if you want - but you’ll have to be very hungry if you want to try them all at once, so we suggest you share them. It is a mixture of traditional Vietnamese dishes and some of their own interpretations. We’d highly recommend the silky tofu encased in crispy green rice flakes with a raspberry chilli dip (“Com Chien”, shown on the top) - we could come back only for this dish. But if you don’t feel like mixing a lot of tastes, they also bigger bowls with only one portion. It’s overall a well-visited place with a nice location just by Boxhagener Platz.

Pros: Great taste, Nice concept

Cons: Often very full

Delicious

This place is absolutely gorgeous with a lot of seating area, it was super busy when we went last night however we still had great service and great food, no wonder the locals love it too! I had a wonton soup which was the best iv had, super flavourful broth and delicious noodles and veggies. My boyfriend had the green curry which he loved the flavour of and liked that it was a traditional Vietnamese dish more like a bowl with other things inside apart from the rice, curry and tofu. We shared dim sums which were to die for! The only downer about our night was that I ordered a cocktail and asked if it could be made without chilli and I was told it could then had a bit of a mini choking fit drinking it with definitely chilli inside (I’m a mayonnaise white who can’t do chilli!!!) I would have just gotten a different drink if I knew as it wasn’t enjoyable for me. Otherwise this restaurant is a must, the food is out of this world and I would go again! It’s recommended to share lots of little dishes as that’s there main menu however we couldn’t pass up our fav mains. Enjoy

Pros: All vegan , Delicious food , Lovely restaurant and staff

Cons: Chilli in my cocktail

1990 Vegan Living is awesome. I never had the opportunity to eat in an all vegan vietnamese restaurant - and they have tapas! Asian way, of course. Everything was super-yummy, fresh and creative. The staff friendly and the interior looks pretty cool. It’s quite busy there, so a reservation could be useful.

Pros: Creative vietnamese cuisine , all vegan , friendly staff
