Best vegan Asian in Boston - Edit
I’m a big fan of Zhu. The food and service are both great. They list gluten free options on the menu and online. I wish they’d do less with soy protein and more with tofu, though they’ll switch it out if you ask while dining in. I don’t like anything with a meaty texture. But my only real complaint is that there aren’t enough vegetables! Dishes come only with the veggies mentioned in the menu description. The Singapore street noodles are my favorite, but they’d be better with broccoli! Good location, easy to park, on the 77 bus line.

Best Asian/Chinese restaurant that I have ever eaten at. A lot of variety and everything tastes great. Even carnivores would like it. It's one of my favorite vegan restaurants.

It’s been a year since I moved away from Arlington and I still miss this place! I love that it’s all vegan and they have so many delicious options. The lunch specials are an especially good deal. I recommend the soy cutlet sizzling platter, Korean style clear noodles, and sweet n sour soy protein. Nice ambiance and pleasant service. Main courses are a little pricey but they are high quality, generous portions and definitely not something I could recreate at home (really excellent mock meat). Next time I’m in the Boston area I will definitely prioritize a visit to Zhu!

Best vegan Asian food I’ve ever had - Edit
The food was amazing! We had the vegetable dumplings, oyster mushrooms, and sweet and sour soy protein. The sweet and sour soy protein was better than any sweet and sour chicken I’ve ever had. So delicious, I highly recommend this restaurant!

I love this place. I actually prefer some of their dishes over the meat-based original dishes they're based off of.

I LOVE ZHU'S - Edit
I love, love, love Zhu's. In the past three years, there have been times when I've ordered from Zhu's nearly every day of the week (I'm looking at you, last February). The miso soup is delicious, the rice is cooked perfectly (I'm still wondering how they do it). Everything I've had (except maybe the orange tofu) is delicious. I love the bibimbap bowl, the curry noodle soup, general tso's soy protein. Don't get me wrong, I love Grasshopper, but also hate driving through Allston. You will not be disappointed. I still order from there. For a real treat, dining in at Zhu's is not to be missed, and the Capital Square movie theater one block over helps make this a perfect date night spot.

Underwhelmed - Edit
Ate here last week with my husband and son. We ordered the mushroom appetizer, dumplings, some kind of clear soup, two orders of the orange seitan and the black pepper seitan over kale.
Read moreMy mouth watered as I read the menu, but when the food finally arrived we all found everything to be spectacularly unflavorful. The orange seitan was dipped in a fluffy batter, fried and topped with a goopy orange sauce that wasn't particularly flavorful. The mushroom appetizer was likewise dipped in batter and fried (there were mushrooms in there somewhere). I had been intrigued with the black pepper seitan and was served a plate of bland, thiny sliced seitan surrounded by a bland, cornstarch-based gravy atop a mound of very chewy kale. The soup, I vaguely recall it being a lemongrass soup--well, there you go, I can't even remember what it was and didn't want to finish it.
This is the kind of restaurant that thrives in places without a lot of vegan choices. The menu reminds me of the old Zen restaurants in Manhattan--even the basil artichoke dish rang a bell--except missing a few secret ingredients.
If I were to go there again, I would have ordered the healthier options. I saw some kind of macro bowl on the counter when I walked in--chickpeas, greens, rice, etc--and it looked pretty good.
We went here because it was convenient, being down the street from the place we were staying. I was super excited to discover it was there. Had I known what we were in for, I would have made the effort to go to downtown Boston and find another place to eat.
(BTW, I would never post such a negative review of a veg establishment on a non-veg forum, such as Tripadvisor or Yelp. This straight talk is just for us veggies.)
Pros: Vegan, Inexpensive, Convenient location if you are in Arlington, MA
Cons: Bland food, fried with goopy sauces, Waitstaff could be nicer, It's cold sitting by the door in April

Recommend to everyone - not just Vegans - Edit
My family and I order from Zhu regularly. They have an online app for quick ordering/payment and they have always delivered our order in under 30 minutes (We're a family of 5 so that's a lot of food!)
Read moreService in the restaurant is also top notch. The food is always hot and fresh and I repeatedly recommend this restaurant to folks who are not sure they'd like vegan food.
I've tried a dozen or more of their dishes and my favorite still is their Basil Soy Protein. It's just awesome and has a bit of spice to it that makes it so yummy. Their General Tso's and Orange seitan are good, so are their mushroom, noodle, tofu and curry dishes. I mean their whole menu is totally tasty.
The only dish I've had there that I did NOT care for was their Pad Thai :( I mean really, I'm a HUGE fan of Pad Thai and it's always been my go-to dish. This was probably the worst version I've ever had-and I've had some bad Pad Thai. It was too sweet, overly saucy and tasted nothing like the Pad Thai you will be expecting. So that was a bummer for me but like I said, so many other great dishes to order that I'm more than happy to have instead of my [former] go to favorite. If you don't order the Pad Thai you will definitely enjoy your meal! You're welcome! :D

excellent food , very nice staff - Edit
Although my first visit left me unimpressed I decided to give it another chance. Since that second chance I have been returning as much as possible. Every dish I have tried since that first visit is excellent. The staff are warm and friendly and the restaurant has a really cozy and pleasant atmosphere. A place where a family with young kids can be comfortable but also somewhere nice for a date night or dinner with friends. A great vegan option for Arlington. Highly recommend.

When I first read this review, I was dismayed since Zhu was becoming one of my favorite places. But then I paid more attention to the flavors and I think you're right, to some extent. Pretty much everything there (especially any of the dipping sauces) is sweet.
Read moreThat said, I've tried about half the menu now and I wouldn't say many entrees are like "willy wonka candy". Yes, the orange seitan and dishes like that with glaze are very sweet, but some things like the Veggie Curry Noodle soup are barely sweet (& I wouldn't have thought was sweet at all, before reading your review).
I recommend you give it another try with some different choices. However, if even the hint of sugar will turn you off, you're probably better off skipping it (the Steamed Vegetables is the only thing I can think of that is absolutely not sweetened).

Clean, nice staff, and great food at good prices with large portions! Also weren’t left feeling gross and greasy like many Asian spots. Am picking up take out as we speak 2 days after our first visit because it was so good.
