Unimpressed :(( - Edit
Was excited to try because of all the good reviews but were made to feel really unwelcome and food was really mixed. I had the burger which was ok but a bit lacklustre for the price and chips were tasteless. My friend had the “chicken of the forest” which was rich and tasty but overall felt quite unwelcome and ignored!

The woman I sat next to on the plane wrote me a list of vegan places to try out in Bali but said I have to go to Zest
Read moreIt was incredible, the views were beautiful, the structure was gorgeous and the food was absolutely amazing.
The whole experience was one that I would love to repeat and I recommend Zest to anybody visiting Bali, particularly vegans

ZERO STARS!!! Worst Vegan Food in Bali! - Edit
This was the worst experience we had in Bali!!! The chef here is not able to make good vegan food. We went to so many wonderful vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Bali and this was the absolute worst. The waffles were by default, for no reason, made gluten free. They were made with rice flour which made them tough and chewy instead of soft and fluffy. So many other vegan restaurants did waaaaay better!!! Their other food items also had wrong/tough texture and bad taste. I was really hoping it would be amazing given the menu sounds so exciting but it was so disappointing! Bali is a wonderful place for vegan and vegetarian food and this place ruins the experience. Also, I noticed there were so many people there barefoot even though the sign outside specifically said not to take your shoes off in the restaurant!!! Ultimately, this is was just a place for people who want to be stylishly vegan and “into the Eastern lifestyle” rather than a place that provides quality vegan food. Again, there are so many amazing vegan and vegetarian options in Bali but THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!! Please skip and save yourself the disappointment!!

Too expensive and busy - Edit
This is a really big restaurant and can get busy at times. If you are like me and don't like too much stimulance around you and don't want too wait for food and drinks for over 40 minutes (it was busy), don't go here.
Read moreThe food was amazing with taste, the portions were dissapointing, especially with the price (western prices; i get more at home with this price).

Setting is better than the food - Edit
Amazing setting to eat and I would still recommend this place. Can’t say the food blew me away. The waffles were good but felt a bit like they’d been sitting around for a while. The bowl I ordered was majority lettuce and for that price I didn’t expect to leave still hungry. Delicious flavours just not enough.

Moringa medicine bowl was to die for - Edit
Yes it's pricey for the area but the food we ordered was well worth it. Try the mushroom pho or moringa rice bowl - they were both phenomenal. Full of flavour and enormous portions (we went for lunch and couldn't eat anything more than a few corn chips for dinner).
Read moreMaybe they would benefit from reducing their menu? It is pretty big and it seems like some other reviewers were left disappointed by more "standard" items like burgers. But the "medicine bowls" could be what they do best as I couldn't fault them.
The only thing I will say was it felt a bit crammed in there, but I did go during lunch rush in August, so that might be on me!

Cool concept poorly executed - Edit
I was thrilled to eat here. It's an imposing restaurant high on a hill and hard to reach, which increased my excitement. I came twice. The first time I asked my waitress to recommend something and she said, "I don't eat anything here, I hate vegan food." I laughed out loud. Very honest but not expected. I tried a veggie burger. It was ok. The brioche bun was nice but it had stringy bits that felt like hair in my teeth. I wanted dessert really really badly but I could not get anyone to take my order for an hour so I gave up. I came the next night and ordered the Caesar salad 2.0 and banana flour bread. I would not recommend either. The salad was on a plate, which didn't work, and it was 1/4 composed of croutons. I didn't find anything interesting or 2.0 about it. The bread was hard and inedible. I have had really great banana flour bread at several places, especially Usada, in town. The manager at Zest said gluten free bread is just hard and not easy to make. I disagree. They just don't have their recipe or formula down. I make better gluten free bread and I'm not a baker. Anyway, again I really wanted a drink and dessert but waited an hour and gave up! The restaurant is really pretty until sunset. I would go during daylight to see the trees outside and take in the view. Their pancakes and breakfast look great. So does the sushi. My experiences were both bad and I would not return for a year or so. Maybe they are not on it yet post COVID? Anyway both service and the food were no where near what I hoped for or on par with local restaurants that are cheaper and have better food.

Great food, lovely restaurant - Edit
This restaurant is decorated really nicely and is a very popular place in Ubud. The food was great! The poutine (they use a BBQ tasting sauce rather than a gravy) was really nice and the zest club sandwich was great as well! The drinks were quite expensive but there are cheaper options if you don’t want to spend much.

Food did not live up to expectations - Edit
I was initially really impressed by the menu and there were so many things I wanted to try that I suggested to my partner we come here for breakfast every morning while in Ubud. However, the food was a real let down and neither of us enjoyed it. We both ordered big gingerbread lattes (the big is actually gigantic so would recommend the small) and they were more ginger than gingerbread. I ordered one of the chickpea omelettes and only ate about half of it as it wasn’t very good. I rarely leave food on my plate but just couldn’t bring myself to finish it. It came with potatoes that looked perfectly seasoned and crispy but when I tried one it had a weird sweet flavour. We could smell what the potatoes tasted like in the air when we arrived. I asked what the potatoes are fried in - turns out it’s refined coconut oil and unfortunately it’s just not a flavour that works for me. My partner had the wake up burger and said he’d give it 2.5 stars as it was bland and too wet.

Cool food and great vibe - Edit
Loved the interior of this place! Such a lovely outlook, comfy chairs and all round great service. The food was nice, I had a jackfruit wrap which was decent and a chocolate milkshake which wasn't my favourite, very banana and coconut flavour which I wasn't expecting but it looked good. If you are doing the ridge walk definitely stop by, the menu was huge so would like to try other things

Worth a visit - Edit
Most places we ate at were mediocre at best and I'm SO glad we tried this before leaving Ubud.
Read moreThe schnitzel burger was so good and the potato/cheese balls were to die for. Tiramisu was nice but was more like a chocolate mousse. They don't get 5 stars as the pizza was strangely disappointing. Kinda felt like salad on dough?
They also had chocolate dipped croissants near the cashier which can be easily missed.

Don’t Miss Zest! - Edit
I want to eat dinner every night at this restaurant! The food is amazing. I had mushroom pizza with GF coconut crust that was a lot of food for one person and very delicious. I also had a side of broccoli purée with wasabi and pieces of fresh broccoli that was fantastic and inventive. I finished with a yummy chocolate covered peanut butter ball. The menu is very extensive, so it is hard to choose and you just have to go back more than once. The restaurant is big and the atmosphere is gorgeous. They don’t take reservations and by 6:15 on a Sunday night it was already very full, so go early!
