Served dairy pizza and they insisted it was vegan - Edit
I visited this place a few months ago (February or early March 2020) before the COVID-19 pandemic, but as my visit caused me anxiety and then the pandemic struck, I forgot to review it at the time. Now that it may be reopening soon, I wanted to warn other vegans and anyone with allergies about the awful experience my partner and I had there.
Read moreI was intrigued by the colourful decor from the outside and was excited to see various vegan options on the menu. We were confused by some printing mistakes on the menu both outside and on the tables which gave one vegan item a non-vegan description, but did not ask about this as we decided to order a pizza to share (I think it may have been vegan mozzarella with artichokes). When it arrived, I noticed straight away that the cheese looked very stretchy and had the brown bubbly marks that dairy cheese often has when melted.
Although I know that some vegan cheeses have become a lot more convincing in recent years, I was a little worried about this. I went up to the bar to express my concern and asked them to double check, and was told straight away by the server that it was definitely vegan. I asked her which vegan cheese they used, and she spoke to the kitchen. A chef came out and said that it was Violife. I was surprised by this as although I like Violife, I have never known it to melt so convincingly and develop those brown marks. However, as they had insisted, I felt I had to taste it to be sure. Unfortunately once I tasted it, I knew from the texture and taste that it was definitely dairy cheese.
Because the experience was causing my anxiety and I was upset to have eaten dairy, my partner went to speak to them this time and told them we knew for sure it was dairy. They then said they would bring a new pizza, but did not offer anything extra to compensate for the inconvenience. When it arrived, it was clearly a very different cheese, which was a lot less melty/stretchy looking with no brown marks.
That one did seem to be vegan, but unfortunately I think they had used at least some blue style cheese this time, as it had a very strong blue taste, whereas there was no mention of this on the menu. I found the blue taste overwhelming and could not eat most of it, and my partner tolerated but did not enjoy it. However, after the earlier experience and the stress it caused, we did not have the energy to complain or ask for our money back, although we probably should have.
