Not actually vegan - Edit
When I went to Zento, I asked our server what options were vegan/could be made vegan and we were told that they did not have vegan options. The menu clearly shows the vegetarian options available but the staff is not very accommodating when it comes to vegan diets.

Overpriced, Average Food - Edit
We have been to Japan and found this restaurant to be average and Americanized. We were most disappointed with the portion sizes and price.
Read moreIt was over priced and at least their online menu is not vegan/vegetarian friendly.
*Be aware that their miso is made with tuna fish flakes and they were unwilling to make any without.
We always make sure to inquire about dried bonito flakes / fish flakes / dashi (fish flakes) or fish sauce. Different places use different terms. Japanese cuisine often contains fish flakes as the base of the broth.
We asked several times regarding the tempura and we were advised it contained no animal products. This is how most restaurants make tempura (water and flour) however we've encountered a couple that use milk or egg.
Tempura: okay, small portions and expensive
Avocado cucumber roll: ordinary, expensive
Curry: too oily and a bit too sweet, too expensive but this one had a good portion
We were disappointed that they didn't serve simmered kabocha (squash) given other reviews mentioned how authentic this place was.
The interior was cute. The parking was very difficult.
Overall we'll look elsewhere for Japanese fair in the future.
Pros: Cute interior
Cons: Expensive, Small portions

beautiful place, but not many vegan options - Edit
There weren't any clearly marked options on the menu as vegan, though there were a few clearly marked vegetarian options.
Read moreThey were willing to work with the vegans at the table to find something that they could eat without it just being seaweed salad, and did check that things were indeed vegan before saying for sure that they were.
