Don't shop here! - Edit
Used to go to this shop a lot as a child, went there today after a long time as I no longer live in the area. I found the shop had a really poor range of products, much less than other shops in Sheffield such as incredible nutshell. Couldn't find a single product that I'd gone in for and had to buy alternatives. The main reason I was unhappy with the store was they refused to accept my Irish £20 note, despite it clearly saying "Sterling" and U.K. On the note. I politely reminded the shop worker that it is against the law to refuse as this was legal tender and advised that she went to check on the internet. After waiting more than 15 minutes for her to do a simple google search, I informed them that as I was 8 months pregnant and fed up of standing around I would just pay on my card. The shop worker returned with the £20 note and asked me if it was from southern or Northern Ireland. Well if it was from Southern Ireland it would be a Euro so yes Nothern Ireland. She then said the advice online was "ambiguous" so she wouldn't want to risk taking it. After doing a simple search myself, the information is only ambiguous to someone who possesses little intelligence. The way that the worker spoke to me made me feel patronised and as though I was trying to con her in some way. I feel that as I don't have the usual dreadlocks and piercings and that I mentioned I live in a less affluent are of Sheffield, that they had a prejudice against me and did not trust me. I put this down to basic discrimination and prejudice and that refusing to accept the note is racist as it has the same value as an English note. I explained I only had this as my father was visiting from Ireland. Either way it was none of their business. I am a shop manager and see it as part of my job to know this information. She patronisingly told me that she would phone the bank and retrain staff if she was wrong, why did she not phone the bank there and then? I also find the staff in there have very poor hygiene and you can smell their pungent body odour over the counter. This is not appropriate when working with food. Most catering employers request showering daily. I will not be returning to the store and neither will my various networks in the vegan community. I'd advise shoppers to go to incredible nutshell where they have a far better range, excellent customer service and much fairer prices. These shopworkers clearly felt they were above the law. Not on at all.
