Best Chinese option in Mae Sai but far from vegetarian

情和園 The red sign above the entrance of this well established place claims to have authentic Yunnan flavor, and I’m inclined to believe them. They will work with vegans and vegetarians if you can get your point across. I haven’t tested their English, but both Thai & Mandarin are spoken.

I’ve primed the pump for vegetarians looking for authentic Chinese food in Mae Sai by asking for stir fried tofu and veggies on occasion from here. They’ll stir-fry just about any vegetable you could imagine with either semi-forbidden garlic or egg, as is standard for any Chinese restaurant worth its msg. An all vegetarian banquet is what I tried successfully upon moving to the neighborhood, with its dishes pictured in hopes you can point to one and get the same thing. Though there is an English menu, too, it’s sparse for non-meat dishes.

I do highly recommend the green sauce in the little dishes pictured—almost like a Mexican salsa verde.

Dining for one may be a little awkward, but one can get two dishes in smaller portions as pictured over rice for about 80 baht.

Whereas most restaurants in town can do a boring veggie stir-fry over rice in the generic sense, this place deserves listing because it can do a lot more, and well.

If you want Chinese noodles or dumplings, stick to the Sushi Xinxian Mianguan by the covered market. This place is most useful for filling a container of rice when the Mae Sai vegan buffet next door runs out late afternoons. Judging by pics on their Facebook page, their chefs really know what they’re doing; they just need vegan discipline. https://www.facebook.com/yunanmaesai

Pros: Where else does one go for a Chinese banquet?, Seems like a nice family

Cons: vegans won’t like the fishtank or most of the menu
