Mediocre vegan hotpot dining experience - Edit
This vegan hotpot restaurant certainly lives up to its reputation for being one of the best vegetarian restaurants serving only hotpot food. There are a variety of dishes and seemingly infinite number of delicious sauces to choose from. It’s recommended to try this well-established and top-rated vegan restaurant.
Read moreWe first have to order the soup base, which mainly has tea in it. As we are not tea-lover, we requested for the waiver of tea-bags in all of our soup base. Next, we get to choose what ingredients to put in our soup, and we were pleased to order comfort food such as corn, cabbage, tofu with wood ear fungus, 8 mock prawns with 4 mock pork belly, 10 dumplings, 2 bowls of rice and 8 pieces of rock melon, for 2 people only. They charged us by how many ingredients we ordered, and it is pricey if you order extravagantly.
The food was generally delicious and extremely filling. The seat setting is limited to 4 people per table and felt like an exclusive private dining experience. The service was however just indifferent as it was rather slow and we had to rush them to serve us. In addition, there was no automatic re-fill of our soup base and we had to repeatedly request for that. After we had finished our dinner and foot the bill, we discovered a baby cockroach crawling on the walls of our table, and we promptly informed the waiter. She chose to let it live as it is the Buddhist precept to abstain from killing. I would think they badly need to disinfect the restaurant thoroughly.
This restaurant is easy to locate in a shopping mall, within walking distance from Nanjing West Road train station.
Pros: Decent and delicious food, Portion is just right, Convenient location next to public transport
Cons: Slow customer service, Unexpected discovery of a baby cockroach

Wonderful vegan hotpot - Edit
A lovely little vegan hotpot place tucked away in the 818 plaza, Nanjing West. Upon arrival the staff were super friendly and found someone who could speak English to explain the menu. You can choose from a variety of soup bases and then the choice of veg, tofu, mock meats etc... is plentiful. You also have unlimited sauces and accompaniments to help yourself to. A fantastic place for any veggie, vegan omni.

A great vegetarian hotpot in central Shanghai - Edit
I love (vegetarian) hotpot, and try to get it whenever I'm in China. I was thus happy to re-find a place I had visited several years before, Yi ye, Yi Shijie.
Read moreIt's super easy to get to: Take the metro (line 2) to West Nanjing Road, use exit #2, and cross the street. Turn right and walk for maybe 1 minute, and you'll be at the 818 mall. The fifth floor has a bunch of restaurants, including this one, with an English sign saying, "vegan hotpot" outside. Note that there is at least one other (non-vegan) hotpot place on that floor, so double-check that you have found the right restaurant!
This is not an all-you-can-eat hotpot place. Rather, you pay for the soup base, and then for each ingredient you want to add. They have the normal assortment of vegetables (e.g., corn, mini corn, Chinese yam, and broccoli), mushrooms, sprouts, tofu skins, and noodles. You can also get dumplings, which cook in the soup, and are always a favorite of mine. They had a bunch of fake meats as well; none of those ever really appeal to me, so I skipped them.
The staff was very attentive, starting with the ordering process. I asked them if I had ordered too many add-ons, not knowing how big each portion was, and they said that I had. So we knocked off a few, and then the fun began: After a few minutes, they brought my pot of broth, the plates of vegetables, and an egg timer.
Now, I've had hot pot before, but they were so tickled pink to have a westerner that they really went wild trying to make sure I was happy. You can choose and get your own sauces, but they insisted on choosing for me. (I was in the mood to be pampered a bit; normally, this would have annoyed me quite a bit.) They asked if I needed a fork. They helped me make sure that the broth was neither boiling away nor staying too cool. Basically, I couldn't have asked for friendlier and more attentive service. And yes, it was in Chinese — but my impression is that they get enough Western visitors that they can basically make do.
I asked them to add more broth, and they gladly did so. After about an hour of eating, I had my fill (and then some), and left. The price was only about 140 RMB — not a cheap dinner, but given the quantity and quality, I really couldn't complain at all.
I've gotten vegan hot pot in a bunch of places; I'd say that the food here was of the same quality, but the service and location really made it excellent.
Pros: Service, Location, Variety of things you can put in your pot
Cons: Can't choose too many things

Vegan hot pot experience - Edit
The staff spoke no English but tried very hard to help us with translation apps. Hot pot is essentially a Chinese meat fondue. You order the flavored broth plus 4 ingredients to boil (2 fake meats, 2 vegetables) per person. You can assemble a dipping sauce at a buffet (they did it for us). It was a tasty experience, the fake meats were ok, nothing extraordinary. Nevertheless highly recommended experience when in Shanghai, as this may be the only place to get a fully vegan hot pot.

Nice one-time experience - Edit
This is a nice, clean restaurant.
Read moreOne orders food with an iPad that shows prices and pictures of the types of broth and their ingredients, as well as all additional ingredients for the broth.
Apparently, one serving of vermicelli noodles is included in the price for the broth. I went for the mushroom broth, which was aromatic on its own. Additionally to that, you get a little bowl where you can add different sauces (such as vegan oyster sauce), sesame seeds, crunchy yellow peas, chilies or cilantro.
Since I did not have a lot of cash on me, I could only order one side, which was the algue tofu.
Be aware that some service charges are added to the total price. However, the incredibly friendly waiter did not charge me these since I had only 58 RMB on me. I really appreciate that, and left the restaurant satisfied but not overly full.
Overall a nice dining experience - that has a relatively high price, but it's worth it.
Pros: 100 % vegan, big variety, Extraordinarily friendly staff, Healthy, not too oily food
Cons: Pretty expensive

Excellent place to relax - Edit
The food is excellent, with a touch of Tibetan exoticism. In busy Shanghai, this is a heaven of peace, especially because it is not always easy to find good vegetarian food. Its price makes it not affordable on a regular basis, but for special occasions it will be one the few locations at the top of my list.

Hotpot In Good Company - Edit
I've never really fancied hotpot, if I go to a restaurant I'm paying for my food to be cooked for me, not expected to have to do it myself. Well I came here for a late dinner with Eric on his arrival in Shanghai, thankfully he speaks Mandarin and was able to order for both of us. There's an induction hob at each place setting on your table, you choose your broth and your selection of ingredients, the bowl of broth is brought to you and put on the hob to boil, your selection is then arranged beautifully on your table. I struggled with the weird chopsticks which are plastic and metal but then the waiter showed me, you open a packet of short bamboo chopsticks that then screw into the metal and plastic part! We had a selection of baby sweetcorn, pumpkin, some leaves, some tied up parcels of green shutes and these rather strange looking things that tasted a bit like hot dogs. It was nice to meet Eric and to share a meal together but I won't be rushing back for hotpot, it was nice just not my thing. The place is easy to find in the mall as it has a sign in saying Vegan Hotpot, it's a big place too and has free wifi.

OMG you must try this place! - Edit
My husband and I ate here in November 2018 while on vacation in Shanghai. We’d never had hot pot before and didn’t know what to expect. This ended up being our #1 favorite restaurant of the whole trip. The table has induction burners built in, which are used to heat your broth right in front of you. From the menu you will choose the hot pot ingredients such as vegetables, mock meats, etc. The fresh ingredients and seasonings are brought out on small plates, and you can add them to your hot broth. The location is inside a shopping mall and was a little hard to find at first because we went in through the wrong door. The staff don’t speak much English, but were still helpful and friendly.

Inexpensive and great for hotpot - Edit
If you like hotpot you'll be happy. We enjoyed the vegetable and tofu options we choose, but didn't like the mushroom balls (fake meat). They have this thing that looks like a cold cut sandwich in pita bread that was way too spicy and in any case nothing special. If you haven't had hot pot, you boil your own food and make your own sauces, which with my skills means inferior food, so I'm inclined to lower my score, but that seems unfair so I'm grading on a curve, but it's exciting to have an all vegan hot pot place and the food is tasty and healthy and not expensive.

Great hotpot experience - Edit
Perfect place for a hearty hotpot meal especially over the colder months. You choose your ingredients and base soup from an iPad menu and make your own sauce at the condiments table. Loads of veggies, every kind of mushroom, mock meats galore. Staff are lovely. I noticed that everything was very fresh with a distinct lack of salt and oil, so the food is quite healthy. They also serve non-alcoholic beer, a massive plus for non-drinkers who enjoy the taste.

Best vegan place I’ve ever been too - Edit
My favourite vegan place in shanghai I have tried. Mainly hotpot based, based around Tibetan Buddhist cuisine and theme. Great atmosphere with private booths, order by iPad (english on menu too) and a bell to easily ring the team if needed. The team there are extremely friendly in a calm and non-pushy manner, some of the nicest people I have come across in Shanghai.
Read moreNot much salt and oil so very healthy, fresh variety of vegetables and tofus and mock meats too if you like, some I have never tried or even heard of. There is also a side dip and condiment station to salt or season your hotpot and foods to taste so it can be for everyone. Always feel so refreshed and satisfied after eating here, unlike most of the typical oily, salty, fried and over-sauced food you get in Chinese restaurants. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for more pure and light food options and the hotpot would be perfect for colder winter times as it warms you inside and out.
Pros: Great, friendly customer service, Pure, fresh and healthy range of vegetables, Great atmosphere
