A pleasant change

A pleasant change from other foods we had been trying in Vietnam. Generous portion sizes, full of fresh delicious veggies, as well as being pretty cheap.
The ladies who work here are really kind and welcoming, and are very helpful when you're trying to decide what to order. The seating area is in a lovely garden and it's so relaxing.
We ate here 3 times in Sapa and ordered new dishes each time. All were fantastic.

Pros: Fresh, healthy, delicious , Friendly staff, Lovely atmosphere in the garden

Cons: Long wait time, Not as cheap as other options , Bring a jacket, it's cold out here!

Superlative Vietnamese Food

While not entirely vegan, most dishes are. Our first day in Sapa we ate vegan food elsewhere, and it was ok. Yen is fabulous, with richly flavored dishes, beautiful presentations, and a dreamy outdoor garden vibe that helps you relax and enjoy. Relaxing is key, because it takes time to craft dishes as complex as these. Two meals so far, and we have calculated that we can make time to eat here 3 more times on this vacation! The chef signature okra dish is elegant and memorable. Vermicelli (bun) dishes are the best I’ve had (and I ate many great ones before choosing a healthier diet). My recommendation is to plan your lodging to be as close as possible for easy access.

Lovely atmosphere

Super cute little cafe/restaurant. We went for brunch and were the only customers there. I ordered the spicy basil tofu puffs with rice and my friend got the mushroom tofu soup. Both meals were delicious and good value for money.

Pros: Tasty food, Nice staff, Cute atmosphere

Great food, cute restaurant!

We found Yen on our last night in Sa Pa, but if we had tried it earlier, probably would have come back again and again! The food is so tasty and the portions are generous. The restaurant itself looks new and has great outdoor seating areas. Must try!

Very good food in a peaceful modern restaurant

Menu isn’t that big but food is very good and the garden you sit in is beautiful and very peaceful. Definitely try one of the ice blended drinks! It’s not fully vegan though, so ask and make sure before you order.

Pros: The garden , The design , Location

Cons: Not fully vegan

Absolutely delicious! Best food in Sapa!

My friend (chef) and I (vegan food nerd) just ate here, and it was amazing! We had the Chestnut Soup, the Szechuan Tofu, Red Wine Mushrooms and Rice Paper Rolls. The dishes were a delight. Totally surprising and sofisticated flavours with a deliciously comforting and homely feel. Fine dining without the price tag. The chef speaks english and easily advised us on which dishes are vegan (some aren't). The Szechuan Tofu is a must-try! Best food in Sapa 😍

Vegetarian restaurant in Sapa

The first time I visited the restaurant, I was really impressed with the restaurant space. Staff were very welcoming and supportive to us. The menu is very diverse, the food is great, and the decoration is very beautiful. We had a wonderful experience at Yen Vegan. Looking forward to coming back and experiencing it.

Delicious vegetarian restaurant in Sapa

So, we literally ordered everything on the menu 🤣and everything was great, the best egg coffee for the moment in Vietnam. The pineapple rice was also really great and the mushrooms were very tasty too. Oh and not to forget chestnut cream soup was excellent I recommend it because chestnut is a very common ingredient in the region.

* NOT A VEGAN RESTAURANT. Dairy used in drinks and eggs on menu

This restaurant has only been opened for less than half a year but the food, atmosphere and service was great. As vegan is in the name of the restaurant we didn’t think to ask about what’s in items on the menu.

We ordered the basil tofu, ginger tofu and a few milkshakes not realising the drink has fresh milk in it. It was only the second time we went that I ordered an iced matcha and saw the carton of milk they used. I asked her if it was fresh milk (what they call diary milk) and she said yes, thankfully they had a nut milk to make it with instead so she made me another one.

I asked her if the croissant I had was made with milk and she said no but I suspect there’s butter in it and the condensed milk it comes with is not vegan. They also buy the crossants so perhaps she didn’t know it’s made with butter.

There is a language barrier so I suspect she didn’t understand when we tried to explain the differences between vegan and vegetarian. It isn’t the staffs fault as the owner of the restaurant named the restaurant incorrectly and should have clearly marked items on the menu that have egg and milk in it, especially as some people may have allergies/intolerances.

I choose to believe it’s a honest mistake. Sapa is rather regional and tourism is expanding rapidly in the area so the English levels aren’t as good as in the big cities. Our guide even said they’re not taught English at school and have learnt English on their own. The term veganism can be confusing even for English speakers and in western countries.

I actually have found a lot of restaurants in western countries who confuse plant based, vegan, vegetarian all the time. Not everyone is educated on the differences.

Your previous comment was deleted but I thought I’d explain what I’ve learnt as this is not commonly explained and google translate isn’t accurate. In SEA there isn’t actually a word for vegan and by that, I refer to vegan being defined as the lifestyle of not eating, using, or containing no food or other products derived from animals where possible. However, the vegetarian diet has been around for a long time and comes from religious practices. The translated word for vegan often refers to the word of those who are religious practicing vegetarian i.e. “chay” (Vietnamese) and “jay” (Thai). Those who follow this practice for religious reasons vary eg. Some practice all year and some only during religious times. Some must also exclude onion and garlic from in their diet. Some have eggs. Diary is not common in traditional dishes but you’ll find it in drinks through perhaps condensed milk, whereas smoothies and the like are a western drink and so they follow western recipes hence the milk. So knowing the above, I can see how terms can accidentally be interchanged just as it is confused in western counties without the language barrier. Like you say, in future when travelling in SEA, to avoid accidents at vegetarian restaurants, It should be emphasised that I don’t eat or drink diary or eggs.

I said there’s no literal translation and said that the concept does exist however google literally translates it incorrectly in Vietnamese so vegan and vegetarian gets translated the same. Regardless, the tag on happy cow has been updated correctly now and other vegans will know so that was the purpose of my post.
