Thanks Happy Cow

Carlsbad was described to me as a food desert. So, when our first evening there, after exploring the NP, my husband was bored of the hotel Happy Cow to the rescue. I actually saw Yellow Brix on our drive in. Brightly lit with lots of people eating outdoors under festive lightning. The interior isnt as festive, but still nice. Per another reviewer, ask for the Vegan menu. There are only 2 entree options, tacos or burritos, plus salads. We got both entrees which have the same ingredients, comes with fries. The filing is a sautéed vegetable mix of broccoli zucchini squash mushrooms & bell pepper. We thought they tasted great with the accompanying beans, guacamole & pico. Wait time was 40 minutes on a Sunday, but this is the only place in town I'd trust to a sit down meal.

Decent option

Has a vegan menu, although options are limited. I had the veggie tacos, and they were better than expected. Veggies were well cooked and flavored, salsa was pretty good. Sit outside, patio is adorable!

Ask for the vegan menu

Tacos were full of great veggies and served with sides of salsa, guacamole, and beans.

Pros: Vegan menu, Variety of veggies

Cons: Vegan salads are salads with things removed

Food was good but you have to educate them

The food was really tasty but be prepared to educate staff. As soon as we said vegan our server just said they don’t have tofu. Talked to a manager and mentioned we saw an off menu option for tacos with veggies rice and beans and they said they do have all those things. All in all good experience and food was good. Just know you’ll have to advocate a bit

Vegan Desert

So Carlsbad is pretty close to impossible to find a vegan meal in unless you grab an Impossible Whopper at Burger King or go to the grocery store OR you’re fluent in Spanish and can navigate one of the local Mexican menus and ask for accommodations. We attempted this but didn’t have any luck so we ended up at Yellow Brix. The patio is very pretty. It looks a bit rundown but for the area it is nice. We were able to order the soft tacos with sautéed veggies and guacamole. They came with rice and beans but the beans had meat in them. We also ordered the brussel sprout salad without the cheese and it was basically fried brussel sprouts with craisins. It tasted like it could have been cooked in butter so not sure how vegan it really was. They also have the good old vegan standbys - French fries and alcohol. On a funny note, we were originally told “all our steaks are vegan.” The steaks are not vegan, do t be fooled.

Pros: Only sit down rest in town that will accom vegan, Patio is cute at night, Friendly staff

Cons: Not the tastiest vegan accommodation , Staff isn’t familiar with veganism, Place is a little run-down

I went. No vegan options except kiddy foods

At best, vegan is a joke. Ovolacto or pescatarian is easy. Meaning, they will remove cheese and meat from your salad and offer basalmic vinegar dressing. Even pasta isn't vegan. This is the kinda place that thinks Vegan means no meat. Disappointing. I could have saved a lot of money striping down convenience store salads.

The good: nice atmosphere, nice presentation on the food.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Expensive , No true vegan options
