Great atmosphere - Edit
My daughter and I were the only westerners which was great.
Read moreIt is a small authentic Japanese Restaurant that makes Okonomiyaki in front of you. They understood immediately when we said we wanted vegetarian. My daughter is vegetarian so I have mostly been vegetarian too and then we can share. We shared 2 okonomiyaki one with udon noodles and the other soba. Delicious
Pros: Delicious food and so cheap, Feeling welcome , Sitting around the food preparation area
Cons: Long way from Station as we walked

Warm welcome & delicious okonomiyaki - Edit
This is a local (non-touristy) and casual okonomiyaki restaurant. It’s a little out of town but very well worth the trip if you want a warm welcome, excellent service and delicious food. It’s the best okonomiyaki I’ve had on my trip to Japan. It’s also really good value as well as a nice experience.

Cheap and local - Edit
Nice local place with friendly and accommodating staff who have a good understanding of veganism. English isn’t so good so bring the vegan passport or a translation with a description of veganism and they’ll be happy to help you. The vegan okonomiyaki is simple so I’d add some extra toppings if I were to go again. The menu looks like there aren’t any veggie or vegan options but just tell them what you’d like and they should be able to make a vegan version. It’s very cheap in comparison to other places we’ve been and portion sizes are good for japan standards :)

Best Hiroshima Vegan Okonomiyaki So Far - Edit
Wish I could give 5 out of 5! The staff, food and atmosphere was great! I highly recommend if you want something delicious and local. The chef accommodates to the vegan dietary needs and will try his best to make it tasty. He adds this mochi (rice) into the okonomiyaki as the base. It absorbs the sauce flavouring and tastes amazing! I came back here twice. Tried the yaki udon the first time and wasn't entirely impressed but when I came back for the okonomiyaki, it was a delightful, tasty surprise! I've had several vegan okonomiyakis before and this was by far my favourite. Will come back here when I visit Hiroshima again.
Read moreThe chef even gave me a cute mochi dessert for free on my second visit. So kind!
I did notice he cooks on the same surface as meat but does wipe it. Unfortunately, there will be a bit of cross contamination from the utensils he uses. If you're not too bothered by this, please give his okonomiyaki a try!
Pros: Good value, Very Friendly Staff, Excellent okonomiyaki
Cons: Limited English, Limited Options, Cooked on same surface as meat

Really happy with this recommendation! - Edit
This was just what I was looking for for my first night in Japan - got to try something genuinely local whilst being sure there was no meat in it. I would’ve given it 5 stars but you should be aware that they cook on the same hot surface as the meat but I’m sure they wipe it down between. If you’re ok with that this place is great!

Cheap but zero taste. - Edit
2 Unhappy customers. We asked vegetarian but I assume this was not the okonomiaky other people here received. We've had good vegan okonomiaky in Osaka, so we assumed it could be done. But this was really tasteless.

Best okonomiyaki I had - Edit
Tried a few different okonomiyaki places before this place and hands down it was the best. It's a little cozy family run joint that is the kind of place that locals go to. Great environment and feel overall. Food was amazing. I ordered the yaki soba but asked for it to be vegetarian and it was so good that I wanted to try another dish with the same thing. Chef made sure to check with me if I was okay with egg before cooking it. Very vegan and veggie friendly! Recommend trying to speak in Japanese to him, he's very nice. The food is cooked on the same surface as meat dishes but chef makes conscious effort to clean up the area and keep it separate from other food being cooked simultaneously.
Read morePros: Anything on the menu can be made veggie , Chef is very knowledgeable about vegan/veggie, extremely cheap (550-800 yen)

Hiroshima Style Yum!!! - Edit
We came to have dinner last night but it wasn’t open so we came back today before we left Hiroshima!! I’m so glad we did. It was delicious. We were the only ones in the restaurant and the owner took time to teach us about it which made it more enjoyable to us. She will veganise the soba or udon okonomiyaki for you.

We tried to come here for dinner but the staff said no even though there were plenty of spare tables inside. Bit of a shame as it was quite a long way from where we were staying.

Perfect Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki - Edit
We wanted to taste Hiroshima okonomiyaki and we were not disappointed! The cook asked if we were vegan and prepared a very nice okonomiyaki in front of us. For 2 people + 2 drinks we paid 1900 yen. It is a very nice restaurant which seems to be very appreciated by locals.

Excellent vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit
I asked in Japanese if vegan okonomiyaki is possible and the people in the restaurant said sure! It was really tasty, made with separate ingredients/spatulas than was used for the meat/egg dishes there. They were really nice and it was a fun atmosphere - got to watch a Hiroshima Carp game in there with some locals. Highly recommend this place!

great authentic hiroshima place - Edit
we loved how authentic the place felt - it's a proper japanese bar/okonomiyaki restaurant where chief prepares all the food in front of the guests. the place was full with locals which made it an interesting experience. menu was a little confusing for the vegan, I asked the chief about food with no egg and no meat and he offered to make me yaki-soba which was absolutely delicious. a great place to try some hiroshima food without stressing out about ingredients!

Awesome restaurant - Edit
There aren't too many places in Japan that are so accommodating to veggos or vegans however Yakeppachi is an exception. The super friendly and helpful staff knew exactly what we wanted when we requested vegetarian and repeated "no meat, no egg and no fish" back to us which was comforting. So may other restaurants seem to think fish is ok for veggos. The experience was enhanced by being able to watch the chef prepare our meal which was delicious and just as we ordered. It was pouring rain when we left and the staff ensured we had a decent umbrella, even offering us two of their own.

Friendly veg-friendly! - Edit
The very friendly staff at Yakeppachi were excited to speak to foreigners, making a big effort to speak in English and even Spanish while also patiently processing my garbled Japanese. They also have an English menu, so ordering is easy.
Read moreTheir okonomiyaki (which are prepared and served on a big grill in the center of the table) can be made vegetarian (without meat) or vegan (without meat or egg), and you can request vegan toppings and a variety of vegan japanese sides. When ordering, be sure to ask for "katsuo nashi" so they don't put bonito flakes on your dish. As they serve meat, it's a good idea to confirm "niku nashi, tamago nashi, sakana nashi, katsuo nashi" with every dish - even though they catch on quickly, it's always good to be sure!
This neighborhood okonomiyaki place frequented by locals and run by (what seems to be) one family is open fairly late by Japanese standards, and is a good bet if you are veg and hungry in this area of Hiroshima, where thee aren't other listings on HappyCow as of December 2014. Plus, it is nice to be able to eat local food while vegetarian! We went there twice - I definitely recommend it.
Pros: friendly staff, very tasty local food, inexpensive and accessible
Cons: serves meat, people smoke inside, have to clearly specify vegan!
