Absolutely recommended

I went for dinner to Welle Gedara - and got not only delicious fresh food, but a whole experience! Antique place, veggies grown in the garden, and a chef who makes you feel comfortable. Can only recommend it!
Next time I will do his cooking class, too.

Great experience

We came back there in the evening because it was closed midday. The food took 45min but everything was freshly cooked for us from incredients from the garden. The owner was very friendly and we felt so welcomed. The food was great!

Would reccomend 100%

I cannot speak highly enough about this place! Our lovely host welcomed us into his beautiful home and cooked gorgeous food for five of us. All of the herbs and vegetables were grown in his garden and the food was just delicious. He was super kind and friendly, as well as passionate about animal rights and his family. We didn’t have the chance to do the cooking class but would have loved to. A truly divine dining experience.

Pros: Friendly host, Delicious food , Beautiful location

cooking class recommendable

I went there for the cooking class. Arranged it via whatsapp very spontaneous two hours before it started.
And it turned out i was lucky, as there was no one else in the class than me (the next day was already fully booked).
We cooked together, I could ask questions, he explained what he did and for what healthy possibilities the different spices can be used for.
Some ingredients were out of the own garden.
What i found a little bit „not so good“, was that the recipes haven’t been included in the course (that was already quite pricey / European-price-ish). So recipes must be purchased on an extra cost for another 8k rupees.
Food was very delicious and as i asked for a huge portion, I got a huge portion. Didn’t expect to eat alone, so it was more food than expected. But ate it all because very good! We cooked Rotis, Dal with spinach and fresh coconut sambal.

Must do in Weligama!

We did an Ayurvedic cooking class here and it was amazing. Nearly all ingredients from the chefs garden, who also foraged mushrooms and was super vegan activist! Was a bit expensive but all goes to local small business so it’s worth it.

Traditional SL delights

In Weligama (South Sri Lanka) you find this gem that is Welle Gedara. It's host, Shan will make you feel welcome and excited about his garden and vegan-ayurvedic recipes.

The remarkable knowledge he's inhereted from his Grandma, he's now transmitting it to visitors through his cooking lessons and his recipes.

You can skip the experience!

Pros: The venue, The quality of the ingredients , The hosts

Pros: Very healthy and tasty, Amazing cooking class, Big portions

Home-cooked meal at its best

Delicious home-cooked meal, cooked in wood-fired kitchen.

The food was fresh, healthy and so so tasty. The best part was the humble, blissful service.

We'll be back.

Overpriced and poor quality

The fancier they want to be (not just at this place) here the more it costs and the quality is suffering to. Here you pay a lot and they prepare Everything fresh, so you wait also for a long time. But it’s not worth it, sorry

Pros: Salad is okay, Nice staff bla bla , Lovely decorated

Cons: No taste , Worst daal I ate in Sri Lanka , Dirty toilet and no water

Most amazing vegan spot on south coast!

Shan’s vegan restaurant is out of this world. We have lived next door to Shan for the last 7 months and my life has actually changed because of Shan’s food. He cooks everything from scratch ... even his coconut milk is made from scratch! His dishes are unique but have a beautiful Sri Lankan flare. Shan instantly becomes your friend when you eat at his place and every meal comes with a beautiful cup of tea (which you can also purchase his tea spices). He accommodates big groups as well if you book before which we have taken so many friends and family. Shan is an incredible Sri Lankan man who was taught by his grandmother how to cook Ayurvedic/vegan food. I can’t recommend this place enough! Our favorite is his vegan pizza and rice and curry but his jackfruit wrap (pictured here) is out of this world (not always in season though).

Something really unique

When going here it is absolutely recommended to get something unusual such as banana coffee or the jungle salad. Those dishes have a flavor that is really unique as the owner and cook uses lots of different spices and ingredients (even the banana coffee is with spices).
For these meals the higher prices is totally worth it.
The place is super awesome, especially beautiful at night.

Pros: Unique meals and tastes , Awesome place

Cons: Pricey compared to other local places

Very local but expensive

Nice staff, kinda liked the local garden style exterior, food like food - was interesting to try. The bad - For simple salad, small coco soup and some pita style coco bread with coco souce 5000 local money. Ok I can agree with price at some point but then please serve at least on a clean dishes so customers can have a feeling that it’s something special.

Pros: Vegan, Friendly people, Good menu

Cons: Expensive, My meal was served on dirty and realy old dishes.

Inspiring cooking class at Shan's

Shan, the host, has made this cooking class the best experience in Sri Lanka. I'm going to stay in a posh hotel on the west coast next week, but there I will probably not be able to have a peek in the kitchen and learn from the chef. Not only about cooking, ingredients, spices, but also about food and the effect on our health.
I had a private class (as no one else had booked the class tonight) and I enjoyed every minute of it. We cooked a pumpkin curry with beet root salad and a coco sambol. For dessert I had a coconut pineapple raw cake. It was all delicious and off course all vegan and organic.
If you are planning to go to the cooking class, be aware it's not going to be cheap. The prices on the regular menu might give you an indication. For me it was worth every rupee, as I'll be taking new cooking inspiration home with me. Cooking classes are available for lunch and dinner.

Pros: Great host, Completely vegan and organic

Cons: Expensive (but for me it was worth it).
