Retro Vibes, Delicious Vegan Eats, and Exceptional Service at Vertical Diner in Salt Lake City - Edit
I had a wonderful dining experience at Vertical Diner today. The welcoming atmosphere and retro-style ambiance immediately drew me in, and I felt so comfortable being in a fully vegan restaurant. It is such a relief to enjoy a meal without worrying about accidental non-vegan ingredients, which made me feel like a “normal” person for once.
Read moreThe wait staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the food arrived promptly. Everything was absolutely delicious. The Park City IPA was the perfect complement to the Moby Burger I ordered—it truly put the crown on top of an already excellent meal.
I am definitely going back and highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a fantastic vegan dining experience!

Vertical Diner continues to impress with its creative and tasty vegan options, making it a great spot for everyone, vegan or not. - Edit
It’s been a few years since I last visited Vertical Diner, and I’m thrilled to see it’s still around and serving unbelievable food! Our visit was a bit of a challenge since we brought two non-vegans with us, but we were confident they would find something they enjoyed. They each chose different forms of pancakes and absolutely loved them.
We started with the Mac and Cheeze Bites—these were so fun and delicious! Imagine mac and cheese hidden in a bite-sized coating, definitely a winner.
I opted for the New American Steak Scramble, which was fantastic.
Our non-vegan friends went for the Sweet Stack Pancakes, and they were not disappointed.
The last entrée we tried was the Chikun Sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. Everything was a winner and absolutely delicious.
I almost forgot, how can we not go to a vegan restaurant and try a dessert. Today we got to the carrot cake, and the fudge brownie both topped with monkeywrench vanilla ice cream. It was a tough decision, but I would have to say the carrot cake was the stand out out of these two.
Pros: Consistently good food, Breakfast served all day, Incredible service

Update: - Edit
Update: The Pancakes and Breakfast burrito is AMAZING. the Joaquin Phoenix the interior vibes aren’t great; but for takeout or the more breakfast foods vs burgers it’s so so good!
Read moreOld Review: I came in with the highest of expectations, considering the phenomenal reviews of the restaurant. The inside had a strange stale smell, and the decor was that of a slightly run town denny’s.
I ordered the Joaquin Phoenix, partially because of the phenomenal name, partially because it was highly rated.
The sandwich was probably a 5.5/10. It had probably 4 or 5 ingredients and was incredibly dry. It was a very very basic item. Whereas something like “Proper Burger” down the road has complex, fine tuned flavors, this was more or less an elementary school cafe sandwich making subway look advanced. It alright, but not necessarily worth the price or the hype for what you get, and the slightly depressing atmosphere. I really wish I could say better things, but that was my experience.
Perhaps other things on the menu could have been better, but there is still the atmosphere of the place to consider.

The Fluffiest Pancakes - Edit
I tried a little of everything- the buffalo tigers, the Mac and cheese (not pictured bc I devoured it), the house salad, and a blueberry pancake for dessert. Everything was delicious! Love how everything was made in house from the chikun to the nooch-based cheese sauce. The star of the show was definitely the blueberry pancake though! It was super soft and fluffy. I highly recommend stopping by!

Got the breaded chickun sandwich with the hand cut fries and the Pineapple Express drink and it was delicious! Tried my boyfriend’s order of the pesto chickun veggie melt, Mac and cheese, and the Pom mimosa drink and it was also incredible, also had a super nice atmosphere and the waitresses were sweethearts!

Cute, kitschy, fun! - Edit
It’s diner food so you know what you’re walking into and what to expect on the menu, but there are also a few fun surprises like mushroom « escargots » and some truly hot hot sauces. On Thursday nights there are rotating events like trivia, bingo, and an art fair. Thursdays are also TACO THURSDAY, which is excellent, and on Tuesdays they have all you can eat pizza and salad on offer.
Read moreI was in a breakfast all day mood and craving protein so I got a tofu scramble and seitan “steak” platter that was pretty good if a little plain. I was still a little hungry so I got two tacos (they’re small) and liked them a lot. I was with someone who housed six tacos and enjoyed them all as well.
Too full for dessert but their milkshakes, made with a local vegan ice cream, looked awesome.
It’s a cute, roadside diner kind of feel. Very kitschy and vintage with a warm and welcoming staff. I will definitely return when I’m in SLC again.

We were driving through Salt Lake and didn’t know any good restaurants, but saw that this place was highly rated. I’m so happy we stopped here!!

My very favorite items we tried were the vertical Reuben, and the mashed potatoes and gravy. Everything we ordered was excellent though, so it seems like you can’t go wrong with just ordering whatever sounds good to you.
The staff was super friendly; Sierra and Jordan were really welcoming and helpful, which was really refreshing because sadly some other places I’ve been lately (with food that wasn’t even as good as Vertical Diner!) have not been that way.
I will definitely be coming here again when I’m driving back through!
Pros: Delicious food, Good beer selection , Good service
Cons: Not many draft beer options, I don’t live closer 😆

Best vegan Mac & Cheese - Edit
I have been searching for a good vegan Mac and cheese for years and finally I have found it! (I’m from the UK). Unfortunately they couldn’t give out the exact recipe but I would recommend trying it! Even the waiter suggested ordering the Mac and cheese which speaks volumes as it’s often an avoided vegan menu item.
Read moreThey had an amazing selection where you would be able to find anything you were after (diner-wise).
The atmosphere gave off typical American dinner, so much so, I found myself questioning if I was at the right place. It made me very happy to feel an American diner vibe while being able to eat anything on the menu.
The milkshakes were great and I’d highly recommend trying one. The desserts looked incredible. The also offer pre-packaged takeaway food such as Mac and cheese bites and burritos (for approx $6-8) and offered sauces and spices and gluten free pancake mix.
They had a mini market inside selling t-shirts where the profits are donated and the prices were good (approx $20)
The servers inside were lovely also.
Overall this is probably the best vegan diner I’ve ever ate at and I’m sad I don’t like in Salt Lake to be able to go more often.
Pros: Mac and cheese, Service, Mini market
Cons: Pls give out your recipe. This is not really a con

Breakfast Bonanza! - Edit
Outstanding selection of breakfast items (and much more). We tried the Bombastic Biscuit breakfast plate and the Avalanche breakfast plate. Both were super tasty. The tempeh bakun and biscuits and gravy were out of this world yummy. We were super satisfied and left with happy bellies. Don’t miss this place. And you can order breakfast all day long.
