Hit or miss - Edit
I’ve only been a few times, because both times I’ve had the chicken burger it was hard, rubbery and inedible. And their fries are over cooked and greasy, which I’ve heard I’d a sign they don’t change out their cooking oil enough. However, I’ve had the breakfast plate with biscuits and gravy, Tempe bacon, tofu scramble, etc. and that was really good. It sucks, because it’s the only all vegan place and Southwest pretty much. I should go more and try different things.

Everything is wonderful! - Edit
I've been here several times and need to come more - every single thing I've had here is SO dang good. The mesquite jackfruit tacos are killer, the buffalo wings are delicious, any and all breakfast items are incredible! I particularly love the biscuits and gravy! They even have giant gluten-free pancakes! And everything is made in house. Highly recommend!

OUTSTANDING! - Edit
We ordered the jerk chicken burrito with mashed potatoes on the side, the tony hawk burger and a brownie sundae. WOW! Everything was so amazing. The mashed potatoes were very flavorful and the tony hawk burger was amazing.

Totally worth it - Edit
I’ve wanted to visit here since they opened but then… the world turned upside down. Finally made it out here today and I was definitely not disappointed! I’d intended to have breakfast but the reuben caught my attention. It was quite good. I will have to come back another time to try more items on the menu.

Classic Diner Fare - Edit
The staff were wonderful, unfortunately the food was a bit below expectations. They were out of the Tiger burger patty, which I was really hoping to try, but I got the Tony Hawk with a field roast burger instead. The burger was messy, but the flavor was decent. The vertical sauce served with the fries was definitely the best part of the meal. We tried the chili, which was nothing special, too thin for my liking, but it wasn’t offensive. Prices were reasonable for the portions and I would still go back so I can try the Buffalo tiger burger.

Best burger I've had in years - Edit
I loved everything about the place. The sign on entering says a lot. Inside, I was greeted by a very nice server, who checked on me regularly. I had the "tony hawk" burger with the Field Roast patty and fries. The bun was toasted to perfection. The whole thing made for the best burger I've had in years, including some pretty darn good ones I've made myself. Quite pleased with the carrot cake as well, although I would prefer it with nuts instead of raisins.

We had the dude cakes and breakfast burrito, but look forward to another visit to sample more. Great atmosphere and service. Wish we had left room for dessert. Would put this high at the list of “must visit” places in Portland.

Delicious food. The Tony Hawk Tiger Burger was great and the vertical sauce on it was really good too. Definitely recommend the chili cheese fries and the Mac and cheese also one to try.
Read moreMy youngest kid had the triple threat gluten free pancakes and they loved the coconut flavor thoughout the stack. They ate about half of them.
We also tried the tiramisu which was more of a pound cake density, but had great flavor.

Do NOT Recommend - Edit
I've been there 4x, the first time 2 years ago was good, but they have went super down hill. The staff is rude, very slow service, the food is always cold or soggy and just tastes bad. My kids love fries but both rejected them after trying them. There are so many other better places around.

My favorite restaurant - Edit
I’ve eaten here multiple times and have had a pleasant experience every time. I brought my son with me this time and we had a great meal together. He ordered the field roast Ian Mackaye with fries and I had a chocolate chip pancake with a side of tofu scramble. We shared an order of country potatoes. While my son isn’t vegan he said he really enjoyed the spiciness of his burger. I meant to take a pic to post here but we dove into the food too fast! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff was friendly and attentive.

Harassing offensive staff - Edit
Went to vertical diner yesterday and I will tell you, don't ever come here unless you would like to be harassed by their staff. First thing we pulled into the parking lot only to be stared and glared at by Taylor(the waitress), so that started our experience awful and confused, we proceed to walk in to collect our order for pick up, after putting our masks on entering the store, I pay for our food in silence, my fiancé asked for utensils and the waitress walked over and grabbed some in silence and threw it into the bag and as she walked away very sarcastically and rudely said "you're welcome", we took that sny comment and returned to our car. As we are in the car we notice that we are being stared at still through the window, as I pull away I look at the glaring waitress once more only to see her standing in the window flipping us off like a pissed off teenager. I go back to the parking spot and get out to go confront her about why she would do this, and I watch her run over to the front door and lock it. From here we proceeded to get in contact with Ian Brandt (the owner) after a long discussion about how we were treated at his restaurant, he was not able to reach the waitress and said he will call us back in an hour or two after he's able to talk to her. Hours go by and never received a call back, left a voicemail message even. Next day comes around and I have called again to try and get a resolution for this. No answer, so here I am writing this review. Because the owner refuses to pick up the phone and resolve this. The resolution is an apology. If you value your money and time, take it elsewhere. This place will give you a horrible experience, take your money, tthey lip you off as you leave. Unprofessional and disturbing. Ian has no idea how to run a restaurant and will ghost you after his staff harrass you.

Good not great like most diners - Edit
Enjoyed being able to sit outside with my group of 6 for breakfast on Saturday morning. We ordered two Mountains: 1 with guac and 1) with cheeze but they both came with guac; breakfast burrito; Reuben with seitan and a side of tempeh; tony hawk, and a taco salad with added Seitan.

Made Me Consider Moving Here - Edit
Literally made me consider moving to Portland for a second. The perfect vegan diner experience. Their hearts are in it and they seiously know what they're doing. Also very affordable!
Read moreWe ordered:
• the Mac and Cheese, which actually tasted like Mac and Cheese and not "cheesey pasta" like some places.
• the Biscuits and Gravy, which, while not the fluffiest I've ever had, were still VERY good. The gravy was perfectly seasoned and apportioned.
• the Buffalo Tigers (fried buffalo chicken-esque cubes), which my wife ordered and I stole, has left me in order-envy. I need them.
I need them.
We also ordered a side of fruit which was fresh and plentiful with strawberries and blackberries with orange and banana slices.
The service, despite only having one person waiting and serving the entire restaurant, was excellent! Very friendly, positive, helpful, and expedient. In fact, when my wife provided a mask to a customer who could not enter without one, the waitress gave us a free tiramisu!
As the name states, this is a diner. You're here because you're vegan and you're hungry and you love your tastebuds. It's fresh, affordable, well prepared, and well served.
Extremely impressed and can't wait to return.

i love the service here, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I've only eaten here twice so I've tried two items off the menu but both of them hit it out of the park for me. i was bummed to see not everyone had such a great and satisfying experience but i really recommend checking it out for yourself. the burgers are particularly amazing.

Very hit and miss - Edit
Going of my experience and other reviews here, I would be careful what you order if you eat here. I went with a friend for the first time and she was pleased, but I was not. She got the Tony Hawk and said it was very spicy, but very good. I got the Philly Cheesesteak and the Tiger Tenders. The cheesesteak was very messy and didn't have much flavor beyond the peppers and onions. There was no cheesy flavor and the seitan was just plain. The fries also felt and tasted like they were a day old right out of the box. The Tiger Tenders were just inedible. I'm not sure if they are tofu or seitan, but they are very tough and rubbery. There is barely any breading on them at all and also no flavor or seasoning at all. It was like eating an pencil eraser with a bit of fried flour on it.

From reading some other reviews I was afraid this place wouldn't satisfy. I was pleasantly surprised. not only did this place hit all the notes, but it also was the best french toast I've had since being vegan. We ordered a decent amount of food all was great from la mesa to the french toast to the cheese fries. It was a fantastic classic diner experience! They also had out door seating !

Must see diner setting with great takeout options and outdoor seating - Edit
The physical space is a wonderfully familiar diner setting. Relatively new restaurant (new ownership as of summer 2020) with surprising menu options with all plant based alternatives made in house. Great quality. Super friendly staff. Tasty kombucha on tap. Plus patio seating (not busy shortly after opening so we were able to eat outside safely with no one around). We’ll be back!

Mixed feelings - Edit
I was super excited to try this place but the food just did not work for me. Maybe I ordered the wrong things? The biscuits and gravy were excellent, but the jackfruit tacos and asian lettuce wraps were extremely salty and I couldn’t finish either. I’m willing to give this place another chance and try more of the “comfort food” options next time, but sadly this was a huge miss for me.

They just started in-house dining and they are social distancing tables. Outdoor seating is available too. Come hungry and plan to stay full for hours after you leave! Soooooooooo good! Perfect choice!!!!
