A must visit in Vienna! - Edit
To be honest, I didn't have high expectations in advance because of some negative reviews on happy cow. But I am so happy I visited Velani! I shared the Viennese Goulash with Spatzle and the Viennese onion roast with roasted potatoes. Both dishes were really delicious! The 'meat' in both dishes was soft and tender and both sauces had a great flavour. I also really liked the roasted potatoes. For dessert I tried the sachertorte. It was okay, but nothing special. The sachertorte was a bit dry in my opinion. I would not come back for the sachertorte, but definitely would for the main dishes if I were in Vienna for more days.

Maybe Austrian food shouldn't be made vegan? - Edit
Don't get me wrong, I love vegan Schnitzel. But a polish one. This was dry, had a weird aftertaste and it turns out that Kartoffelsalat is just not my thing. Wouldn't necessarily go there again.

Dear MariannaCieślak, we absolutely disagree, numerous customers are very happy with our vegan Austrian dishes. However we are sorry, that we did not meet your taste and we are sure, that there are plenty of other vegan restaurants better suited for you.

Vienna (and more) cuisine but vegan - Edit
I got the schnitzel with potato salad and the photos do not lie - it was ginormous. The staff was nice, food arrived quickly and was really tasty. No complaints. Really recommend.

Kind staff, but terrible food - Edit
I love the concept of Austrian food made vegan. There's no reason vegan should be limited to Chinese or Indian (though I love those cuisines, too). Velani's decor is cute.
Read moreSome staff speak English, others don't, but they direct you to those who do. They made an extra effort to explain allergens on the menu, and to help me charge my phone.
There were only a couple gluten-free things on the menu. Cabbage rolls looked good, but were sold out for the day. So I got the salad, which was pretty simple. And an entree with a vegan roast (chunk of veggie meat), onions, and potatoes.
The veggie meat was tough, like cooked rubber. Tempeh, tofu, Beyond Meat, or Planted would have been way better. Not sure what brand this was; they just said soy-based.
Good location just a couple train stops from Schonbrunn.
Pros: Some staff speak English, Good location (near Schonbrunn), Cute decor
Cons: Veggie meat was tough and gross

Thank you for the kind words about our restaurant and the service team. Regarding the criticism of the food, we are aware that we cannot satisfy the tastes of all our guests, but the onion roast is one of our most praised dishes, and we are sorry that you did not like it.

Our favourite restaurant in Vienna - Edit
First and foremost the Zwiebelrostbraten is to die for!!! The schnitzel is huge and pretty tasty. Definitely recommend booking a table, we were just really lucky that someone was just leaving and the lovely staff came after us to give us a table. If you want traditional Austrian food without the animal definitely go here.

Very traditional and good quality - Edit
Nice place, small menu but all very austrian. The food was good, I would not say amazing but good enough. The schinetzel was big in size but a bit dry. If you are in Vienna, you need to go to get a sense of Austrian flavours.

Dear Laura, thank you for the recognition of our food. It's a pity we didn't entirely meet your taste. If there is something wrongwith a dish (e.g. 'Schnitzel too dry') or the customer's taste is not met (which can of course happen), we are also happy to offer you something else instead. Please get in touch with the service team next time.

Wiener Schnitzel in Wien - Edit
Was damn lucky as it seemed fully booked. Got a seat at the entrance. The prices were quite high but the Wiener Schnitzel was gigantic. Apart from the size, the whole dish was quite tasty. I originally wanted to try some typical Austrian dessert, but I was so full.

The food is very good. Only Mini negative point was maybe the interior. I expected something more "cool and nice", but it was a bit oldfashioned. But of course this is a matter of taste, so still 5 Stars rating👌

Good attempt at converting inconvertible cuisine to vegan - Edit
Very good "meat" heavy dishes in an Austrian style. Any cuisine that relies heavily on meat for everything is hard to convert to vegan, but here it tastes very good! I had the Wiener Saftgulasch mit Spätzle, and it was great. The portions are huge too.

For meat eaters wanting to try vegan cuisine - Edit
Velani in Vienna presents itself as a fascinating culinary experience, interpreting traditional Viennese cuisine, often characterized by pastries and a focus on meat, in an innovative, vegan manner. Velani has excelled in this concept. Particularly noteworthy is the vegan Wiener Schnitzel made from seitan, which surprisingly comes close to the original in taste and texture, even if it proves somewhat challenging to cut.
Read moreAs someone who appreciates the broad palette of vegan cuisine, I personally find the imitation of meat dishes less relevant to me, but I recognize the value of such creations for individuals seeking an alternative to meat without having to forego familiar taste experiences. In this regard, Velani offers an interesting option for those who want to gradually approach a plant-based diet.
In terms of service, I would have liked a bit more attention, and the ambiance may seem rather simple to some. Nevertheless, it remains clear that the culinary offerings convince. Overall, however, my wife and I were not completely satisfied.
Thus, Velani represents a noteworthy address for adventurous eaters who wish to explore traditional Viennese specialties in a vegan version. It caters to an audience open to a new interpretation of well-known classics and willing to embark on the exciting experiment of a taste journey, even if there is still room for improvement in service and atmosphere.

Good food, homely atmosphere - Edit
The waitress recommended me a special, like a fish steak with knödels and a red wine jus, then this Charlotte for dessert, and it was all spot on. I can't speak to how authentically Austrian it is but I'd been recommended the place on that basis so there you go. It's dog-friendly and the wait staff are lovely. I was there on a Tuesday just after opening and it was almost full so consider booking ahead.

Authentic and good - Edit
Just the kind of food my Austrian family would’ve gotten when I was a child, but vegan. I’m not the biggest fan of Austrian cuisine but I have to say that the food was delicious. And authentic. Luckily the interior wasn’t. Very nice and clean and modern. They offer all the ‘classics’ you’d get at any traditional Austrian restaurant from Schnitzel to Gulasch. Just without the resident alcoholics at their ‘Stammtisch’.
