Pretty good! - Edit
Enjoyed the texture on the mock pork. Flavour of noodles was pretty subtle. More veggies would have been nice.

Love it - Edit
Haven't been here in YEARS, but everything still feels comfortingly familiar, and the food is delicious, with amazing service (even though they were really busy they were so patient with our questions).
Read moreThe menu is not consistent in labelling vegan options, the page with the noodle and rice dishes, does not label any of them as vegan (including the steamed rice!), upon questioning, we were told most of the noodle dishes are actually vegan.
- grilled dumplings: delish!! Soft airyness, with a flavourful tangy spicy vinegary sauce
- sweet vinegar ribs: crispy, tasty, sweet and sour and tangy
- crispy tofu: very fresh soft tofu, with perfectly crisp exterior, with tasty hoisin based sauce w/chinese 5 spice?
- fried kuey teow: ok, no char tasting, and a little subtle on flavour
- sweet corn soup: good, nice chikn pieces, this used to have amazing bacon pieces in it!

Clearly labelled vegan options in a vegetarian restaurant - Edit
You can get to Box Hill via train. You can also find parking there if you drive, but most parking is not free.
Read moreAlthough not mandatory, it is recommended that you book beforehand as the place can get very busy.
Everything is vegetarian and about 30% of the menu is vegan labelled with a V or VE near the name of the dish.
The food is generally tasty and high quality.
Pros: Clearly labelled vegan options

Exceptional fried tofu - Edit
Great vegetarian restaurant within walking distance from Box Hill Central. Whilst they’re known for their mock meat dishes (which are also delicious), their fried tofu is to die for. I would come back there purely for the tofu. The tofu blocks are decent sized, freshly cooked, and so so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Their complimentary sauce that goes with the tofu is also really good.

Basic Chinese - Edit
Some decent Chinese fare in this small, busy, friendly, efficient little restaurant. I wouldn’t bother with their laksa again - bland and free of vegetables - but dining here with a Chinese friend, familiar with the cuisine, made all the difference.

Lots of options, pretty tasty - Edit
The menu is extensive and a high proportion of the dishes are vegan, not just vegetarian. Service seems fast even though it was busy and everything served was hot and pretty tasty. In terms of the dishes, the sizzling tofu was a bit disappointing as it was just sweet & sour, but the tofu & yam pot was more interesting than expected and rendang "mutton" was excellent. We tried the "monkey head mushrooms" on the basis of a previous review and it was unlike anything I've had before - highly recommended. A lot of dishes are mock-meat based, but there are also a lot of vegetable options, so if you order well you can have a nicely balanced meal.

Lunch deals were attractive but not as filling as purchasing a main with $4 refillable rice. Mock chicken curry and roast mock duck are the best. Mock Lamb rending is also tasty.

Read moreThis was a last minute visit and I'm glad to say the food was a lot better this time. The lo-Hun mixed veg and hot and spicy chick*n worked well together. The portion sizes were reasonably large which was just as well as prices are higher here than other similar style eateries.

Returned for dinner with a friend after 3 years or so and I didn't enjoy any of the food to be honest. Everything had quite an artificial after taste. I had sweet corn soup as a starter; the stock had an overwhelming mock ham flavour to it. The sweet and sour soy was okay, but again had the same flavour going on. My friend's black pepper mock beef dish was also very salty. Her tofu starter on the other hand had no flavour at all. I don't think I'll be back.
.........
Quite a large menu with an abundance of mock meat items.
Would like to see more vegetable based dishes and more freshness and flavour.
The Sunday Yum Cha session is worth trying at least once as many of the choices are Vegan.

A summary of several visits: good to very good. - Edit
We’ve been going to VH for nearly 2 decades , from the time when this was our fav family outing to now, when it’s a reliable and wholesome dinner for just my wife and I. Over the years, we’ve had a few “duds” , which were more about taste preferences than the standard of the dish, but mostly we have been well satisfied, and find the prices reasonable. It’s always worth returning, and recommend that you speak with Manager Karen or a chef if you want recommendations of dishes. We have our favourite dishes, and I would rate this the consistently best Asian Vegetarian restaurant. We generally get a few “fake meat” dishes plus some veg dishes, but stay away from the desserts. (If you like desserts, the Fiona’s is the place for you.....*weird subliminal cross-reference). I understand why some vegans don’t like the idea of fake meat/fish etc, but seriously, get over it... it’s mostly all plant based, just make sure you don’t have egg or oyster/fish sauce ingredients, and you’re totally safe. It’s also important, if you are in a party, to request that all the dishes be brought out together, as the coordination is rather haphazard... dishes come out when (they are) ready, not when you are ready. Which can also mean starters get mixed up with mains, and if you aren’t sharing, then one of your group might have finished their meal before the others receive theirs. That could certainly be improved, but it is likely more cultural than organisational. So, just

Passive/aggressive greens - Edit
Almost recklessly, my friend and i wandered in here without a booking on a Friday night. I'd blown in for the weekend at the start of the year. The place was packed, and the woman at the front told us there were no seats available.
Read moreJust as we were about to leave, some mysterious event such as a cancellation occurred, and we were asked to wait a minute. A short time later we felt like tv stars (?) as we were ushered to our - exclusive ;) - table.
The place has a nice, cosy atmosphere. My friend liked all his dishes, and i liked one of mine, but i had a strange desire to get a plate of greens - that turned out not to be such a good idea.
It looked like a heap of stranded leaves with an unsettling smell, covered in a thin sauce with the flavour of garlic and something i didn't like.
I ate - or faced up to? - a little, then left it. Even so, my friend took care of the rest.
All in all, nice atmosphere, but only 3 stars, because the dish i liked wasn't that great, the place isn't vegan, and i didn't like the greens. That said, my friend ate all with abandon.
PS This review was posted in 2016, but when i updated it to change some things, it moved to 2017.

Delicious - Edit
A wonderful example of traditional Chinese foods made vegetarian (and mostly vegan). The staff were very polite and educated on menu items; happy to point out which dishes had eggs or dairy and make them without it. The setting and decorations seemed a little off, but the mood was light and happy. The oolong tea was delicious and complimented every dish. The lemon chicken, sweet & sour pork and special fried rice were all well cooked and presented, though maybe slightly sweeter than expected. Portion sizes are large and pricing is quite fair at around $16 per main. Deffinitely going here again.

Wonderful food with good service - Edit
We went in for lunch and must have just beat the crowd. Enjoyed every bite of soups, dumplings etc., from a diverse menu. Great flavour, nourishing and healthy, with speedy service. Highly recommended. If they delivered (I have too many small kids to dine in regularly), one would be tempted to make a weekly meal of it.
