WE FINALLY GET VEGAN ICE CREAM, NOT SORBET! - Edit
In a nutshell: Nothing like a Sunday treat with Vegan options other than basic sorbets!!!
Read moreTHE GOOD
Great location in West Village, if you want to explore restaurants, perhaps check out a jazz club, or neighborhood bar, they are all within walking distance from each other. The shop is well lit and glad they have seating outside, even if rarely empty (except when it's freezing outside), it's a welcoming establishment. Although they do not have sugar-free options with their Vegan - that would be TOO PERFECT I GUESS - assortment, they have several options including seasonal flavors which sometimes are forgotten by traditional ice cream brands that offer a Vegan range.
THE BAD
Depending on the day and time you might find a line that goes around the block, and I don't know you but, I normally don't do lines let alone in scorching hot summer or freezing winter! They may offer an option to place the order before stepping into the shop and have it ready to pick it up, but since it's a narrow space it might be confusing if given the option, of where to pick it up.
THE BEST
Having more than one option, that is NOT A SORBET, it's an ABSOLUTE WIN for Vegans. Like seriously, having Vegan ice cream or gelato texture with other options other than basic vanilla or synthetic flavored-milk chocolate flavor gives me hope for humanity, especially in indifferent NYC. I wish I could have more than 3 scoops because I wanted to enjoy more of each flavor. The caramel flavor is spot on, with a hint of the coconut base but less noticeable in the chocolate flavors. Do not get fooled by the description of the ice cream, like something that you think is going to be 100% chocolate but turns out not to be, ask for a sample (advice I will follow myself next time) The texture of the ice cream is perfect, it is not overly frozen, you can enjoy it right away, and is intended to, not like overly frozen ice cream where you lose the flavor because it numbs your palette. #Vegan SEAL OF DELICIOUSNESS approved!
Pros: Flavor selections, perfect location
Cons: Forget about sugar free, You have to make a line

They're infamous for cross-contamination when serving it up. I pointed this out to them on more than one occasion and at more than one location. I even went so far as to file a written complaint to management. They basically just don't seem to give a damn. So, I haven't given them my business since 2019.

Amazing ice cream - Edit
My only problem is I always order too much because it’s such a treat to have so many options! Got a mint chocolate chip shake the first day, which was to die for. The next day splurged on a Sundae with hot fudge, praline pretzels, wow, and whipped cream. Even though it was the smallest size they offered, it was way too filling, but every bite was delicious!

Small location but great food! - Edit
they have a variety of choices for us vegans. i had two scoops of the vegan cookie dough (all of their vegan flavors are made with cashew milk) and came back for two chocolate scoops later that day. the staff was very kind and friendly. everything about the service and the food was great, though this location did not have much space for seating.

This was the best vegan ice cream that I’ve ever had!! There was so many flavors to choose from that I couldn’t decide! The staff was really nice and let me sample a few flavors and I decided on the chocolate chip cookie dough which was sooo delicious!! I would highly recommend this place! I’m dreaming of the next time in back in the west village area so that I could go back!

I nearly screamed for this (vegan) ice cream!! - Edit
This summer I've been informally trying all the vegan ice cream spots in Manhattan. So far, THIS is the best I've found (I all their shops & trucks offer similar quality). They had several vegan options AND chocolate sauce.
Read moreI had mint chocolate chip with vegan chocolate sauce (hey, why not?) and it was terrific; much better than others I have tried. The texture was rich and creamy, very much like traditional ice cream. The taste was also spot on with no overpowering taste of cocconut or other non-dairy milk. Van Leeuwen is my new go-to place for vegan ice cream!
Pros: Lots of vegan options, Multiple locations in NYC

In Case You're Looking for More Vegan Food in NYC - Edit
Just in case New York's other hundreds of vegan options weren't enough, we've got some vegan ice cream at Van Leeuwen. It's a bit pricey but it's worth it. They are not a vegan-only establishment, but have a good selection of vegan flavors, plus some nice toppings to choose from!

Vegan Ice Cream! Yes Please - Edit
Love Van Leeuwen, they actually have vegan ice-cream most are made from nuts so if you are allergic than its probably not for you, otherwise it is delicious I love I can have ice cream without the dairy! If you have friends who are into dairy they have those too but I recommend you give them a taste of yours, they won't regret it! Go Now!

Tasty Ice Cream with Friendly Service! - Edit
Let me start off my review by stating that Van Leeuwun is not an entirely vegan establishment. About half of the daily flavors are vegan friendly and clearly labeled so on the menu. The staff is very friendly and was more then happy to let me sample pretty much all of the vegan ice cream flavors they offered.
Read moreVan Leeuwun gets HUGE points for creating innovative and exciting vegan ice cream flavors. I have to say I was pretty sick of constantly getting the same boring flavors at all of my usual places. I ended up getting green tea and chocolate rum doughnut flavored ice cream both were extremely creamy and delicious. I can honestly say they have some of the best vegan ice cream I've ever tried! I will definitely come back and try more flavors!

Vegan Ice Cream! - Edit
Van Leeuwen is an ice cream parlor with several locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and an ice cream truck! They have vegan flavors. All of their vegan ice creams are made with nuts. They have many flavors with milk, and several vegan versions of the same flavors. I recently had an awesome cone with a scoop of dark chocolate and a scoop of pistachio. This establishment, however, charges $0.50 extra for vegan. My two scoop cone was $6.00. Yum!
