Amazing wild mushroom pie!! - Edit
Popped in for lunch with mum, was greeted with a smile by very friendly staff. Looks like they've updated their menu and it's fab! Wild mushroom pie, pretzel bun veggie burger, delicious broccoli and goats cheese quiche. We were very impressed! And what a range of cakes!!

Veggies welcome, vegans an afterthought... - Edit
Maybe half a dozen vegan options on the menu, mostly the same stuf you see everywhere (bean casserole/chillis etc.). Only 2 vegan cake/traybake options amongst maybe 15 total options on the day I visited, and the flapjack I tried was poor.
Read moreMost disappointing is that many veggie options on the menu would be so easy to make vegan (at least 50% of the menu I reckon), yet are veggie-only. Veggie breakfast is a prime example. Also, vegan options on the menu and display counter are generally not labelled, despite a legend with a "V" for vegan on the menu.
Overall, it's a nice and interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to eat there again.
Pros: Nice atmosphere, Friendly staff
Cons: Poor vegan options, Vegan options not clearly labelled, Lazy veggie-only options

old school - Edit
The menu is nearly all vegetarian and it really is old school.
Read moreMaybe about half a dozen vegan options which considering there is about 30 options of the menu is a little disappointing.
I had a salad plate which with the exception of the broccoli sauted in garlic, was all just veg. Healthy but lacking somewhat.
I would stop here again as it is much better than a service station and is a great location.
Pros: staff, vegan options, healthy
Cons: need to revamp the menu

Fab food - Edit
One of my favourite places to eat in the lakes! It is a must on my list every time I come home! It is some of the tastiest food I have had out!
Read moreI do wish they had other options of milk to soya! And would be good to have more vegan puddings but I'm usually too full from the good sized portions they give!
The art is also what I come to visit and regularly changes so always worth visiting over and over.
Pros: Great art and Great food
Cons: Wish they did almond milk!

Tasty but typical veggie abd vegan food - Edit
The cafe itself is mainly vegetarian with the addition of a few fish dishes, and there are around 3 or 4 vegan options. Like the previous review, they aren't the most varied dishes being stews curries etc, but they are tasty. They do serve vegan fruit crumbles with vegan ice cream, and usually have a few options here, but it is only flapjsck otherwise.
Read moreI have been three times and the service has always been good and the staff are happy to help when asking about vegan options.
Pros: A number of began options, Great setting, Helpful staff
Cons: Lacking on variation, Vegan options should be more clearly labelled

Could be worse - Edit
I wasn't sure whether to leave a 3- or 4-star review for Upfront. What swung me is that the gallery is a really interesting place, with a pretty old building, beautiful art to look at and great, unusual stuff to buy (greetings cards, jewellery and accessories such as scarves). This is a perfect place to shop for gifts!
Read moreThe food experience for vegans is solid but limited. The main courses, usually curry and bean chilli, are tasty and satisfying, though I wish there was more variation. Sadly the only cake is generally a rather dry flapjack, and you have to ask the staff because vegan options are not marked.
And while we're discussing the staff, a striking but consistent feature of Upfront has been that they just ignore you! In contrast to your average service worker who will see someone waiting at the counter, smile and say, "We'll be with you in just a minute!", the Upfrontians simply disregard your existence until they are finally forced to take your order. Very odd.
Pros: Beautiful location, amazing gift selection, decent vegan savouries
Cons: Aloof staff, needs more cakes!

Really good vegetarian food! - Edit
Upfront is a great place to have either a meal or coffee and cake. Apart from tuna and prawn sandwiches, the rest of the menu is vegetarian, and there's a huge choice of really inventive types of meals, with something to suit everyone.
Read moreThey also have puppet shows on several days of the week, art on the walls and a shop.
Pros: Great food, Nice staff
