Great place, even “late” - Edit
Even if it were just for the later (for continental Europe: “normal”) kitchen hours, this place would deserve a good review. But the food quality and selection; the vibe and the staff put it at the top. Cheerful and helpful service without being overbearing. Chill, cosy lounge vibe with both solo diners and groups. Two of us shared a selection of taster plates—mostly vegetarian but a couple meats for my companion. The tomato fennel cured “sausage” was the standout, but everything was great. The bread selection was also particularly good. This was a rainy Monday, so other nights might be busy enough to require a reservation.

Really loved the location and decorations as well as the vibe. Staff was really kind and gave us recommendations on the menu. Even though the options are not plenty, it was very delicious!

Visited last night and was far from disappointed. - Edit
We chose a couple of vegan taster dishes as a starter...the crsipy fried enoki mushrooms and the white bean dip both of which were amazing. For main I had the neep and tattie hashbrown with some handcut chios on the side. Well it was awesome.

Lovely venue good food - Edit
Had a nice meal here at under the stairs, the food we had was tasty and we all enjoyed our food but I wouldn’t say it was amazing. It took a while for the food to come out though even though it was quite quiet. However it had a really cosy atmosphere that we all liked!

Veggie platter - Edit
The veggie platter was very tasty and they easily accommodated to make it vegan. The scottish beer was also good and the staff were very nice. (would of rated it 5 stars but the app didn’t let me)

Amazing platter! - Edit
We asked, on the off chance, about how vegan the veggie platter was and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. The platter was huge and absolutely delicious. The staff were are a delight and they also had a great selection of draught beer.

What a gem! - Edit
A fabulous little restaurant with fantastic ambiance and service. Being a vegan celiac, there wasn’t much on the menu for me, but the chef put together a lovely dish that was full of flavour. I had the duo of vegan cheeses for dessert which was wonderful. The cocktails were interesting and delicious. Our server was full of knowledge and made great suggestions. We had a great experience and I highly recommend this restaurant.

Excellent! - Edit
Cozy place, as the name depicts, ‘under the stairs’. Would not have found this place if it weren’t for my Happy Cow app. They have a decent selection of Vegetarian and Vegan options which are clearly marked. The Black Turtle bean Frijoles we’re we’re warm and filling and the watercress hazelnut & pickled red onion salad was fresh and zesty and they did not skimp on the toasted hazelnuts. Add in the the superb ambiance and friendly staff and you have a winner.

New menu - Edit
Ate here at the beginning of November, on what turned out to be the second day of their new menu.
Read morePlenty of interesting vegan options (enough to return a couple of times and not repeat oneself).
I had the port & beetroot terrine with wasabi avocado purée to start, then the most incredible butternut gnocchi with "beurre blanc", and then poached pear with chocolate ganache & granola.
The other options were equally enticing.
I was super-impressed (and I'm a foodie who doesn't like to have to "make do") and can't wait to go back!
Great service and atmosphere too.
Pros: New vegan-friendly menu, great service , good value

Delicious and cozy - Edit
I had a vegan meal, not a lot of choices for vegan but I chose the pasta and it was amazing. My carnivore friend said her burger was the best she had ever had. The menu is small but it was all classy versions of average pub food. Great cocktail selection. Staff wasn't super attentive but it was easy to get their attention

Great pub/restaurant - Edit
The employees are extra-nice. There is a good range of beers and the food was delicious. It is a great place to take your sceptic meat-eating friends to when you are vegan or vegetarian. Will definitely come back.

Vegan haggis - Edit
Cozy but hard to find, look for the street sign. Both me and my 9-year old daughter took the veggie haggis. The sauce wasn't vegan, but the rest was and it was great! Propper Scottish comfort food!

For (alcoholic) basement lovers - Edit
Under the Stairs is a pretty well hidden basement bar. (To be fair: Their name doesn't lie.) So there is no sunlight whatsoever, dim lighting (mostly candles), but nicely furnished and decorated.
Read moreThere is a fair amount of vegetarian dishes on the menu, vegan less so, however, at least a few. I tried the carrot burger with the pink grapefruit salad on the side. They offer plenty of alcoholic beverages but I didn't pay much attention what's on there. All I can say is that they wouldn't know which beers were vegan ("there is no way to find out").
My burger was excellent! Very tasty, great patty and good bun, too. The grapefruit salad was a bit odd but not bad either (I expected more grapefruit in it; sadly it was mainly juice tossed upon everything else.)
Very quick service in the beginning, then pretty quickly change for the worse (no idea why).
I'd like to return on another occasion to try some of their cocktails (and, maybe, the second vegan dish they provide), since the atmosphere was very nice (you have to like dark basements, basically).
Pricewise nothing to complain. WiFi flawless.
Between three and four cows - but since it's the first review I don't want to spoil their business.
Pros: great dark atmosphere, excellent carrot burger
Cons: unreliable quality of service, only few vegan options
