Tasty and reasonably priced - Edit
I was staying with a non-vegan friend and I invited her for a walk and a meal.
Read moreWe walked the 2.5kms along the beach and inland to this eatery
The decor isn't overly great but then again I am here for some good food.
We ordered a stuffed dosa and a chickpea curry.
It was the first time my friend was eating a dosa. She liked it.
Both the dosa and curry were flavourful and tasty.
The washrooms were okay.

A tasty Indian restuarnt on Gerrard Street, clearly marked Vegan? - Edit
Yes, many Indian places on Gerard Street are heavy with oil and salt where many Brown people (like myself) avoid like the plague. Udupi Palace has really tasty food that will tell you it's Vegan right on the menu. Parking is not so bad for that area and it is just down the road from Glory Hole Donuts that also has Vegan options.

Authentic Indian Mostly Vegan - Edit
Seating is downstairs once you enter, so on the street at first glance you might think no one is there. Go inside; you’ll be happy you did.
Read moreThe food is delicious. I ordered my favorite aloo mutter and my friend ordered a South Asian thali. The taste was wonderful and my only issue was with the heat. I would have preferred it more mild. Still, I’ll go back anytime.
The wait staff was very helpful and kind. Altogether a very nice experience.
Pros: Mostly vegan, Reasonable prices, Delicious food
Cons: Unable to change the level of heat

Good and not so good - Edit
I visited this place twice. The first time I tried the Thali for lunch, it was good and that made we want to visit again. The second time, my friends joined me for dinner and it was disappointing cause the chutney was spoilt.

LOVE LOVE LOVE - Edit
The food here is absolutely amazing!! Everything is vegetarian and vegan items are marked with a V on the menu. Mainly South Indian menu with some North Indian dishes as well. Great selection of chaat items as well as dosas! Such great portions for the price. Highly recommend!

Delicious vegan indian food - Edit
I am conflicted about this restaurant. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. But one of the main employees (maybe the owner?) is not friendly at all, and makes for an uncomfortable experience when we cash out. He does not even tell us our amount, he just passes us the debit machine without saying a word. We continue to go for the food as the value for the price is great, but wish the service would improve.

Awesome - Edit
Udupi has become my go-to spot for quality vegan food. The service is always inviting, helpful and quick. The food, in addition to being listed as vegan, jain or vegetarian, is some of the best Indian food I've tasted. Really good experiences here.

Vegetarian Indian Food with Vegan Options - Edit
We enjoyed our vegan lunch here. This restaurant was near where we were staying.
Read moreParking: street parking only, we were able to find a spot near the front entrance.
We had ordered to-go but the inside was larger than we had expected based on other photos on happy cow. It is next to an Indian Attire store.
The pricing and portion sizes were reasonable. I expected larger portion sizes.
$10.75 Special Vegetable Curry: Great flavor without a lot of heat/spicy. We read previous mention that the food was spicy here but we didn't find that to be true with these dishes.
$10 Onion Rava Masala Dosa: I'm not sure I've ever had Dosa before but my partner and I quite enjoyed it. It had really great flavor and was quite filling. The potatoes inside were really well flavored, but not spicy/hot.
We were happy with our meal here and would return.
We'd like to see vegan cheese added. Vegetarian places seem to be similar to regular restaurants in the respect that they often do not carry vegan cheese, only dairy. We'd of course prefer they only use vegan products in place of dairy, but feel that they should at least offer them vegan subs. We wanted to try the chili cheese Dosa but it is vegetarian and they cannot substitute vegan cheese.
Pros: Delicious Food, Many Vegan Options , Reasonable Pricing
Cons: Still serves dairy, No vegan cheese

This place is pretty unpredictable. Sometimes good, other times disappointing. Weird institutional cafeteria atmosphere and an extensive south Indian vegetarian menu but nothing really stands out. The paper dosas aren't bad neither is the samosa chaat... But stay away from the tandoori.

A Real Find - Edit
I am unable to have Thali in my city because none of the Indian restaurants serve it so this was a great treat to find it when we were in Toronto and I will return there when we visit next. I had the vegan South Indian Thali and it was great with just the right amount of spice throughout. While the restaurant lacked an intimate atmosphere, the food made up for it and it was great value for the money. Unfortunately, they do not serve alcohol but you cannot have everything.

My new favorite in TO (after sad demise of the Bo Da Duyen and Gujurat Durbar). Amazingly helpful staff. Great food. Super value. It's not all vegan, but they know what vegan is and are quick to help with selection.

I love south Indian cuisine and udupi palace is a great example. The food has the signature spice. Service is super fast. I love the thali although my only complaint is the roti with the thali seems store bought. But the curries more than make up for it!

Man that's spicy! - Edit
I went here with my sister and parents, all Indian lovers, and we really enjoyed our meals. The soup was soooo spicy that 3 of us who are complete spice lovers could not finish! There were some interesting things on the menu that I hadn't seen before at other Indian restaurants. Very large, casual, bustling place. I would definitely go back.

Very oily - Edit
Contrary to what the previous reviewer said, there is a fair number of South Indian restaurants in the GTA. Some are reviewed elsewhere, like Saravana Bhavan.
Read moreUdupi Palace is huge, with tables spaced quite far apart. You could do some ballroom dancing in the open area it's so spacious. Not a very welcoming interior though. It's sunken in a half-basement and bare.
The service wasn't bad. The server was very aware of what was vegan.
The food was quite oily. I had the Vegetable Uthapam (pancake) and my partner got the Thali (#46). I much prefer Saravana Bhavan - it's far less oily and the vegan selection is more diverse.

Tasty, filling, and good value - Edit
There are not that many South Indian restaurants in Canada, so I was pleased to find Udupi.
Read moreMy brother and I ate there recently and each had a paper masala dosa, shared an onion pakora, and I had a mango lassi.
The food was tasty, the service was excellent, and the bill was very reasonable. The food is more expensive than India--until you factor in the plane trip! Masala dosas are around $6 and paper dosas around $8.
The ambience isn't great, but the food more than makes up for it!
I will definitely be returning.

Amazing and very affordable - Edit
I love Udupi Palace. Yes, the decor is a little lacking in warmth, but who cares when the food is so good? Great selection for vegans and vegetarians alike and the service is always excellent. My fiance and I ate there recently and our total bill including a 20% tip was under $30 for both of us including non-alcoholic drinks. We were both stuffed! Where else in Toronto can two people eat so well for so little money and the food is some of the best we've had too. I highly recommend the h'or douvres platter - lots of variety. If you don't like it hot though, you might want to scrape the seeds out of the chili pakora - it's basically a battered, fried whole green chili pepper. The dosa's are also excellent as is the Chana Masala.

Udipi is usually great - Edit
Just to let you know, this is a SOUTH INDIAN Restaurant Chain. It is COMPLETELY different than 99% of all other Indian Restaurants. The reason is that the South Indians are MUCH more laid back and don't really try to immigrate to Canada/America. While the North Indians know how to work the system. Especially the Gujuarti's. Toronto is VERY lucky to have this SOUTH INDIAN chain in town.
Read moreSouth Indian Food is amazing.
We had the food at the veggie food fair. It's understandable that the food wasn't up to 100%. They forgot to salt the potato's in the Dosa. Ooops :).
I'm still giving 5 stars because this Chain is AMAZING everytime we've had it in the various cities around the U.S.
Pros: Type of Food, Quality of Food, Price
Cons: none
