Highly recommended! - Edit
A no-frills, order-at-the-counter cafe with wonderful food. Ask for no dairy and no ghee and the staff will gladly accommodate. Easy on the oil, well-balanced dishes. The enormous “paper” masala dosa is perfect for sharing and almost too beautiful to eat… but you’ll be glad you did!

a ‘solid’ choice for all-vegetarian Asian Indian cuisine - Edit
Asian Indian restaurant food as served in this country with all its white flour, white sugar, white rice and red hot spices is my least favorite ethnic cuisine, so I am not in the best position to rate this all-vegetarian cafeteria-style restaurant. There, my ‘full disclosure.’
Read moreAfter eating here three times during the 1990s, I had concluded that I much prefer American Natural Vegan to Asian Indian Vegetarian, so thereafter I instead always ate at the nearby It’s Only Natural. But upon adopting ION as its moniker, ION had rightfully deleted the word Natural from its name, and my evaluation of ION has transitioned from disappointment to disbelief. Because of all its fried foods and white flour and mock meats and booze, there now is little left for me to eat or drink at ION. So, says I, why not again give Udupi Bhavan a try? And that is exactly what we did.
No mock meats here, which make a mockery of vegetarianism. Restricted to what is vegan and wholesome and vegetable-centric, mostly from among the curry dishes there is still much to choose. (More than at ION.) While the Vegetable Korma and the Chana Masala both came in identical curry sauces, the sauce was not overly spicy, and so much to my liking. (And remember, I generally do not like Indian foods.) While potatoes predominated among the assorted vegetables of the Korma, all those vegetables, even the potatoes, were good. Plus, because we informed him we were vegans, the quiet gentleman who served us knew not to include the cow-milk-based raita with our meal, even though it is listed on the menu as included. While there were no substitutes offered, neither did we ask for that.
If you concentrate on the very reasonably priced food rather than upon the paper plates and plasticware and dull view out the window or view of a dull TV set, you are sure to have an enjoyable and, more importantly, nourishing meal here. So leave downtown Middletown behind you, and follow Main St south.
Pros: reasonably priced, many vegetable-centric dishes, humanely spicy
Cons: environmentally-challenged dinnerware, the hideous TV broadcasting its annoying local ads

Cute and interesting - Edit
This place was really fun. They have this awesome glass bottle soda and their food is unique and delicious. First time having Indian food and it was really good. You get so much food and you can mix and match with the person or people you're with. The food is really inexpensive too. Definately going back :)

Fairly basic, but great food - Edit
Fantastic restaurant with super friendly staff. I eat here regularly, including going in for lunchtime thalis. They are vegetarian rather than vegan, but are happy to make sure all the food you get is vegan. If you're in Middletown, I think this is probably your best place to go for veggie food. Cheap, and they also do take out.

Best Indian Cuisine Anywhere - Edit
This 100 percent vegetarian south Indian cuisine is incredibly delicious. We especially love Chana Batura (curried chickpeas served with a gigantic hollow bread), mixed vegetable pakora (potatoes, cauliflower, onion, eggplant and chillies, deep fried with spices), and masala dosa (crispy crepes filled with perfectly seasoned potatoes and onions). Everything, in fact, is so delicious that there really isn't the space here to list them all. Most of the yummy choices are vegan and the friendly and knowledgable folks behind the counter will glady advise you. The prices are extremely reasonable, making this a fantastic value. Almost all of the clientele are Indian, who are as friendly as the staff, and many of the women diners stroll in wrapped in colorful saris, drenching it in authentic Indian atmosphere; we often feel as if we are eating in India!

Cons: none at all

The Chana Batura no longer is vegan; butter is added. When we told the man behind the counter of our vegan preferences, he was honest and told us. Another reason for vegans to trust Udupi Bhavan.
