A Hidden Gem & the Best in fact One & Only Vegan Place in Kolkata: Ubuntu Eat - Edit
This is a long pending review. Yes, I take care of the food and menu of this place, but being a foodie and a traveler, I totally think Ubuntu Eat deserves a review from my end as an individual.
Read moreUbuntu Eat is a true revelation in Kolkata’s dining scene, proving that vegan food can be both extraordinary and indulgent. As Kolkata’s first vegan café, Ubuntu Eat has set the bar high with its innovative and delicious offerings. From the moment you step in, the warm and welcoming ambiance makes you feel right at home.
The café's commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices shines through in every detail, from the handcrafted décor to the creative use of recycled materials. But it’s the food that truly steals the show. The Kosha Mangsho and Lachha Paratha are standout dishes, delivering an authentic taste that’s hard to believe is entirely plant-based. The Unmutton Biryani is a must-try, blending vital gluten and quinoa to mimic the richness of traditional mutton biryani perfectly.
Don’t miss the Shrymp Kalia, which offers a surprisingly real shrimp-like experience, and the Brownie with Nice Cream—a delightful vegan twist that’s both decadent and guilt-free. Ubuntu Eat's menu goes beyond traditional vegan fare, proving that plant-based food can be full of flavor and creativity.
The attentive and friendly staff, including the passionate chef Shreya, make every visit special. Whether you’re a dedicated vegan or simply looking to explore new culinary experiences, Ubuntu Eat is a must-visit. It’s not just a café; it’s a community hub that champions compassionate eating and environmental consciousness.
Highly recommended for anyone in Kolkata—Ubuntu Eat is a culinary gem that will leave you impressed and eager for your next visit.
Pros: Huge variety of dishes, Veganized many epic non-vegan dishes, Amazing staff

Kolkata's First Vegan Cafe - Edit
🍴 Ubuntu - The Vegan Community 🍴
Read moreUbuntu is Kolkata's First Vegan Cafe. The name itself is very unique. "Ubuntu" is an African word. It means "I Am, Because We Are." Very simple but meaningful words. Not only name, they create uniqueness on their ambience & food also. Let's take a look.
🔴 Ambience : It's a small cafe with beautiful hand painted interior. Their furniture made with waste pieces of wood & they use Omni Van Seat & Taxi Seat for their sitting space. They have a small library which is made with a damage fridge. They use it & make it a library. Here anyone can take any book or give any book without any monization. Isn't it great? For their interior they use some old bottles & give them a makeover with news paper & paints.
🔴 Food - Now come to the most interesting part of this cafe. They try to create some extraordinary dishes like Fysh Fry, Unmutton Biryani without involving any animal product. Each & Every food surprise your taste buds.
I tried their,
1️⃣ Fysh Fry - ₹170 (9.5/10)
◆◆(Made with Soy Products & Seaweed, to bring the fishy smell)◆◆
2️⃣ Unmutton Biryani - ₹280 (9/10)
◆◆(Unmutton is made with Vital Gluten, Quinoa, Pea Products and also some Soy to make sure the taste and texture become like Mutton. They call it The Kindest Biryani)◆◆
3️⃣ Lachha Paratha (30/- each) with Kosha Manggsho - ₹170 (9/10)
◆◆(The Same Unmutton piece they use in making Kosha Mangso) ◆◆
4️⃣ Brownie ₹160 with Vanilla Nice Cream ₹60 - (9.5/10)
◆◆ (made from Soy milk. It's called Nice Cream as it's nice to your health & taste buds & also for animals & environment) ◆◆
5️⃣ Lime Cheezecake topped with Nolengur - ₹220 (8.5/10)
◆◆ (They Call it Cheeze instead of Cheese because they make Cheeze from Plant base ingredients) ◆◆
*Note* - All these substitutes are made without any preservatives or additives or chemicals. All are made from naturally available ingredients.
🔴 My Recommendation : Fysh Fry & Unmutton Biryani.

A great day at Ubuntu - Edit
Eating a vegan diet could be the “single biggest way” to reduce your environmental impact on earth. Most importantly it is not about the food only it is all about a particular life style.I'm very much happy to see that Cafes from Kolkata are coming up to promote this idea.We know that one can make difference and if they are really willing to contribute for the society they can in any way.Like Choosing veganism or promoting the idea of veganism could play the vital role to it.
Read moreSo have heard of a vegan place in kolkata ??If not then plz go and visit Ubuntu Community,Kolkata's first eco friendly Vegan cafe.Their Idea that Sustainibility is the key, really admiring. They make food taking utmost care of the envioronment and our health too!
I am a hardcore non vegetarian but cannot help in falling love with this cafe. The co owners of Ubuntu was so friendly and whatever we have ordered solely recomended by them..
Now coming to food,Fysh fry and Fysh nuggets were mindblowing.
Fysh fry is also a must try one, Ubuntu guys have changed my entire concept about fysh fry, anyone can go over this fysh fry and fysh nuggets.Next we tried Chycken tikka pizza, whoever thought that without chicken a pizza can be so lovely....Again Ubuntu guys have made it possible.
In maincourse we had wheat luchi and Kosha Manggsho both were fabulous, the texture of the gravy was on something different level.Later on we had some Jeera rice with butter Chycken...can't describe much, just Can suggest go and do taste, you won't regret. We are very lucky that Abhinav and his team introduced Ubuntu as kolkata's first Vegan cafe. Here A great variety of delicasies available. If anyone wants to explore a new genre of food, they surely must visit Ubuntu.
Once again thanks to Ubuntu for having us over and helping out to explore a new community and it's delicasies.
Lastly Thank u so much Abhinav and Shreya di.It was great interacting visit to your cafe.We got to know a lot about vegan lifestyle. All the foods were absolutely amazing and specially the hospitality was really warm.
Last but not the least that is about a little kitty named 'Buchki', she is so cute , will sit next to you all the day long and you cannot stop yourself falling for her. without mentioning her name our visit to ubuntu was incomplete.
Ubuntu is not only a cafe it's an emotion.💚💚
Much love Ubuntu.
Keep Growing like this.
Pros: Food, Ambience, Hospitality

Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt review! Ubuntu truly embodies a lifestyle of sustainability and compassion. Their innovative dishes like Fysh Fry and Chycken Tikka Pizza are game-changers. Best Vegan Restaurant & Community Ever - Extensive, Creative Vegan Glutten Free Menu even for street food - Edit
Ever since I turned Vegan, I thought I would have to give up on my favourite biriyani. Ubuntu Cafe is a living heaven for both vegans and non vegetarians given its extensive menu. I had my unmutton dum biryani from here and was happily shocked to find out it tastes exactly like mutton biriyani, I kid you not! This is the best and my favourite from the menu. You have to pre order for a certain number of plates else can go for the biryani combos they make from time to time. Message them on insta and they will inform you. This biryani is a must have and the unmutton pieces are to die for.
Read moreI also loved their gajar ka halwa and tender yet flavourful 'puneer' kebab. Available for both dine in (opposite south city) and takeaway, their packaging is eco-friendly and comes with lovely hand written notes. I have not seen such an extensive menu for any Kolkata restaurant honestly and let alone a vegan one. Ubuntu is a wonderful community of environmentalists, animal lovers, kind fellow beings. It is a wonderful initiative for the animals and the environment, without compromising on the taste buds. 💚
I have a list of items in yet to try like their Thai cuisine, roll, sorshe fish, whole-wheat glutten free pizza, Chinese mock meat dishes and of course vegan brownies. Shreya is a passionate and amazing chef. The warmth of the team is palpable. One can also get many vegan supplies here. They have plenty of healthy bowls and smoothies for health freaks too. They are coming up with more additions to their already extensive menu and I'm dying to try their Indonesian offerings. May update this later when I try the rest. ☺️
Pros: Great taste, Affordable, Extensive vegan gluten free options to choose from

Its opened newly in Kolkata, India and its a heaven for vegan and ethical people. Many non-vegans also visit the place and turn vegan or at least develop a liking and appreciation. Amazing taste and quality. The vibes are amazing and calm with no AC. Love the fact that it's cooled by natural air. They also have a hostel upstairs and event space above that with regular events. Love the mock meat items like the pizza, burger and roll. They make their pizza base and bread at home. The cafe is mostly zero waste and are there more than any other cafe I have seen.

Amazing Vegan Space - Edit
If you are a vegan (or even if you are not) this is the place to visit in Kolkata. This newly opened cafe and social hub serves the best food in Kolkata, is run by incredibly friendly people, and is an environmentalists dream. They are plastic free, the furniture is up-cycled, and wherever possible food is bought locally. They are also aiming to become zero-waste.
Read moreWe sampled many of the dishes including Sahi Vada (vegan curd and lentil dumplings), the Chyken Sandwich, a Smoked Tofu Salad, a Neat Burger, a Neat Pizza (with home-made vegan cheese ), Brownies and Ice-Cream. Amazing food, wonderful people! - Edit
We were looking forward to visiting Ubuntu Community Cafe, and we were not disappointed when we visited them yesterday.
Read moreThey have an amazing menu, the space is beautifully decorated with upcycled furniture and ornaments, and the people who run and work in the place are so passionate about veganism and the environment! The concept of zero waste is important here - even our bill came on a wipe clean board!
We started with Sahi Vada (a dish made with vegan curd and lentil dumplings) and Smoked Tofu Salad. The salad, in particular, was delicious - we’ve been missing smoked tofu - and the Sahi Vada gave us the opportunity to try something we would not have felt comfortable eating in a non-vegan place, as it was so creamy.
For mains, we opted for Chyken Sandwich and Neat Pizza. The sandwich was toasted and served with tomato sauce on the side, and tasted great, but the winner for us was the Neat Pizza, which is topped with melty vegan cheese and mock meat. We could not resist the temptation to order the Neat Burger, which was easy to share as it came as two mini-burgers. Again - excellent!!!
We were very excited to see that ice cream was on the menu, and I loved my brownie with ice cream - the brownie was light and chocolatey, and the ice cream was incredibly creamy!
As we have a couple more nights in Kolkata, guess where we will be heading! Highly recommended!
Plus - they have a event space and a hostel upstairs! The hostel is not yet open, but what an amazing combination!!!
Pros: Passionate vegans serving fabulous food!, Eco-friendly, zero waste., Excellent value for money!
