Trader Joe's - basic

You'll find some of the basic vegan options among prepared foods, and you'll see all the usual kinds of packaged foods for which Trader Joe's is known.

It lacks fresh / local produce. It lacks safe parking. There is a parking garage and there's a lot but the competition is fierce. The store is always super crowded, in the process of stocking. The customer service varies -- but the team members are at one of the highest volume stores in the area and worn out. There are plenty of grocery options -- so unless you are on foot, seek your provisions elsewhere.

Needs improvement

They used to have a lot more vegan options. Recently they've discontinued the rainbow wrap, lentil wrap, and chocolate chip peanut butter copkies. There isn't as much here for vegans now and its pretty disappointing. Even items that you might expect to be vegan will have milk powder or egg added in, so vegan really isn't the target market here

Cheaper than Whole Foods

We were pleased when Trader Joe's finally came to this neighborhood, bringing their low-cost (but sometimes high-quality) food as an alternative to more expensive places like Whole Foods.

While TJ's doesn't specialize in organics, they do carry a fair amount, including both produce and dry goods. They usually have organic kale, salad greens, broccoli, tomatoes, and other staples. The downside is that all of their organic produce is prepackaged in plastic so it isn't possible to save plastic by bringing your own bags for produce.

In the dry goods departments, we like their organic blue corn ships and their organic salsa.

Just be sure to read labels carefully when shopping at Trader Joe's, because not everything is as salubrious as it might look at first glance.

Pros: A number of low-cost veg*n items, some organics

Cons: Sells meat, and lots of junk, too
