Awesome place - Edit
This is the best place we have visited on our holiday in the UK. We both had sandwiches, mine with falafal and my husband with vegan sausage. The sandwiches were served with a delicious salad. We also took a vegan cheese scone with us to eat later, we loved it. The coffee was perfect (flat white and latte, both oat milk). Will definitely come back before heading home!

Visit the Toucan Cafe every time I come to Minehead (Somerset is sadly lacking in many vegan cafes/restaurants). The food is always fresh and well prepared and everything is clearly labelled on the menus and on the wall. Always lots of specials and cakes too. Between the three of us today we had the cream tea (vegetarian), the scrambled tofu with mushrooms on toast (vegan) and the Mediterranean veg pesto sandwich with a chocolate and avocado smoothie (both vegetarian). I had the tofu, which I could eat by the truckload (9/10).
Read moreEdit: another visit, another great scrambled tofu! Also tried the oat milk spiced chai latte, which was lovely.

Toucan was the reason I moved to Minehead! - Edit
Toucan has been my go to place for obtaining vegan produce for nearly eight years. If there's anything they don't have in stock then they will gladly order it for you. Since the pandemic began I have taken to pre-ordering by phone, so that my order just needs paying for when I visit the shop. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help.
Read moreThe shop went through a difficult period when the original owner, Sally, sold the business on, but happily Toucan seems to be back to its indispensable self once more. Oh, and it's the ONLY place where I can obtain my favourite vegan sausages, as they are not stocked by supermarkets and not sold by the manufacturers! May Toucan continue to shine for many years to come. Blessed be the fruit!
Pros: Local, Good range of vegan products, Helpful staff
Cons: I preferred it when it was run by Sally.

You-can Toucan - Edit
Often pop into Toucan when visiting Minehead, the cafe is above the well stocked shop and is an oasis above the high street. Vegan items on the menu and many Vegetarian dishes can be ‘veganised’ on request.
Read moreI ordered the Tofu burger and salad today and was astonished to find the ‘burger’ was actually a large slab of tofu - so despite my best efforts I had to share it with my companion as I couldn’t manage it all. Mixture of fresh salads were fresh and flavourful.
Pros: Something to suit all appetites, Vegan options, Fresh ingredients
Cons: Venue not accessible to all

More vegan options please! - Edit
Nice seating areas and friendly service in this vegetarian cafe.
Read moreUnfortunately, not that many vegan options available - only one cake option and most mains had animal products in.
What we ate was tasty, and we'd rather support an independent veggie business than one that serves flesh as well (which, sadly, is basically the only alternative in Minehead), but it would have been good to have more choice.
Pros: Nice vibe, pleasant seating area and service, Tasty fresh food
Cons: Serves animal products, Lack of choice for vegans, Upstairs (not accessible for disabled)

Great Food - Edit
Good selection of choices for lunch. Two vegan options, rest veggie. Friendly advice and assurances that spreads and dressings would all be vegan. Really generous portions. Ordered carrot & sweet potato soup plus bread, followed by veg pie and a curry. We had a lovely cake as a takeaway!

Wonderful Vegan Food in Minehead - Edit
No wonder this place has a Certificate of Excellence.
Read moreWe had caught the steam train to Minehead, and trying our best to avoid the dull, tourist-trap menus near the station, walked along The Avenue and onto The Parade.
Finally, we spotted the Toucan Cafe.
Hearty sandwiches, and huge, filling soups.
Wonderful.
And a good selection of plant-based milks: soya, almond, oat etc.
We wanted to stay for afternoon tea, and try some of their yummy looking cakes, but the last train home beckoned.
We will be back.
Pros: Amazing sandwiches. Huge, hearty soups., Very reasonable., Large, bright, comfortable cafe.

Great find! - Edit
We found this place due to the trusty HappyCow and it was a very welcome surprise.
Read moreThey have a fantastic range of items in the health food shop on the ground floor, including lots of vegan-friendly cosmetics.
The cafe is upstairs, fairly big being spread out over a few rooms, and has lots of vegan options. The day we visited three of the cake options were vegan. The vegetarian sausage sandwich is vegan, as was at least one other breakfast savoury course. They also had a choice of soya, almond and oat milk for the coffees.
Impressed.

Hearty sweet and savory treats - Edit
We had a sweet potato and bean pie with salad (plus a selection of vegan condiments) and the portions were really good and worth the £7.50 each. We felt very satisfied after (even my boyfriend was full and he never is!). The cafe has a nice atmosphere...characterful and cosy. And the staff were really friendly. Definitely worth a visit!

Minehead is on the vegan map! - Edit
40 years ago when my folx used to bring us to Minehead whilst visiting Grandma and Grandad the only food we were interested in was fish and chips. Now a little wiser and a lot older I brought my Dad and his sister to Toucan to see what it offers vegans. My Dad isn't veggie but he knows a good meal when he has one and his veggie Homity pie was a great success. My partner and I put the staff through the awkward squad test and asked what was vegan, as well as nightshade and sugar free and still available 10 mins before the kitchen was due to close (beware earlier winter closing!). We had the soup, a serious portion with similar sized chunky bread and bean burgers with side salad. Washed down with a Roibois tea, a choc banana shake and finishing with an almond and apricot sugar free cake. All were great. The burger was moist, the Mayo tasty, the salad fresh and with dressing but not too much, the shake sweet and rich but not sickly, the cake was splendid. Dad reckoned the almond cake he had was the most almondy almond cake he's ever tasted! I assumed that was a good thing! The bill for four meals and drinks was about £40 and we were very happy with that. The staff were helpful, and polite, the cafe is bright and colourful with a nice old school veggie cafe feel. There were lots of vegan options that had sold out but hey we were kind of late!
Read moreThe cafe is up stairs so wheel chair users might have to miss out on this great little place.
