Vegan-friendly
A zero waste store that not only sells vegan bulk items, but also offers vegan deli items like tsukemono and desserts. Has a small dine-in area. Carries much more than zero waste products and is billed as Japan's first zero waste supermarket. Open Mon 11:00am-8:00pm, Tue-Sat 11:00am-10:00pm, Sun 11:00am-8:00pm. Closed Wed.

Nice shop - Edit
There were a few vegan options at this little shop. They offer both take away (at the counter in front)and table service (in the back of the shop). I had the vegan Buddha bowl which was good and fresh. There was also a vegan Bahn mi and several vegan sweet cakes.

Vegan friendly cafe and natural food grocery - Edit
Location: on Kawaramachi a block north of Marutamachi, a short walk from the Kamo river and the Keihan Jingu Marutachi station.
Read moreIt’s a shop selling home goods, fresh fruit and veggies, bulk nuts, spices, grains, etc, and a deli with vegan items clearly marked. After 18:30 the cafe and counter area become a natural wine & craft beer bar called Pas Mal. There’s coffee, tea, interesting herbal and fruit drinks, scones and lots more.
If you’re shopping for groceries or take out food, bring your own jars, bags and bottles or pay for returnable deposit containers. Customers can eat in or take out. Credit cards are accepted.
Pros: Fresh seasonal produce , Variety of prepared dishes , Friendly atmosphere

Good vegan Bowl - Edit
They sell one vegan bowl in a take away dish. You pay 100 Yen for the bowl and geht the money back when you bring the dish back. This shop was very nice to see after so much packaging in supermarkets and convenience stores.

Vegan supplies if you’re nearby - Edit
This zero waste shop was near where I was staying so it was quite handy to pop in and grab some bits to eat back in our apartment for dinner. They also have cookies, nut butter, vegan milks and other zero waste supplies however it’s not fully vegan. We’ve had better luck in a fully vegan place, this place does have meat and fish on display.
Read moreThey have a deposit scheme for plastic tubs which we are using and plan to return at the end of our trip in Kyoto, but if you had your containers you can use them or they can use biodegradable.
I bought some tofu with greens and soya meat which I ate with Rice and edamame at my place.

Great products and good lunch! - Edit
This is a great zero waste shop that sells fresh produce, nuts, products such as rice or pasta, cosmetics like body balm, tooth brushes or sun screen, sweets, salads and cookies - the vegan options are clearly labelled. Plus a cool bag brand that uses recycled paraglide fabric etc for their bags. They serve lunch from 11:30am - 2pm which is also delicious, not all of the lunch options are vegan but the stuff can tell you.

An exciting glimpse of the future - Edit
Kyoto has a lot of wonderful temples and shrines that can only be found there. They have something else that’s special too— Japan’s first (and only?) zero-waste supermarket!
Located a short walk from Jingu-Marutamachi station, one can find just about everything at Totoya Zero Waste Market, from fresh produce to cleaning supplies to noodles to nuts and everything in between— and it’s all zero waste! You can bring it home in your own container, or buy or rent one from them.
They also have a collection of low waste personal care products, and a deli where you can either choose dishes to bring home, or enjoy them at the counter in the back of the store. We couldn’t resist buying some of the vegan fudge. It was delicious!
The staff were so friendly, and being in this store made us both feel so happy. If this is the future of supermarkets, we’re here for it!! ❤️❤️

Pros: Amazing , Lots of variety , Friendly staff
Cons: Sells animal products , Can be pricey , There isn’t one in Yokohama, where we live 😂
