Really Good! - Edit
My husband and I ate here for dinner. I had the rice bowl with added tofu and it was pretty good! We also had the tofu chocolate pie which was delicious. Would definitely eat here again.

I didn’t like my vegan dish - Edit
I went with 2 other people and they dangerously messed up everyone’s allergies. It took about an hour from the time we ordered, then when the food came the vegetarian food was so gross. Then I got sick after.

Tasty vegan options! - Edit
Some local friends brought us here when we visited on a port stop. They're not vegan, but knew that vegan options were offered here. Both hubby and I ordered the Vegan Seitan Donair, which I absolutely loved. The pita was super tasty and the seitan accurately mimicked the meat of a traditional donair. The only strange thing was the sauce which was very coconutty. I didn't have a problem with it as it added a tropical flavor, but some of our friends thought it was just too strange. We finished with the Chocolate Tofu Pie which had a super smooth consistency.
Read moreThey make everything fresh to order, so it takes some time to get the food. Unfortunately, a mistake was made on one of our friend's orders, so the rest of us were almost done eating by the time they remedied the situation and brought out his dish. To their credit, though, they took the Chocolate Tofu Pie off of our bill.
I would definitely come back and try some of the other vegan options if I happen to be in Halifax again.
Pros: Great vegan options, Everything prepared fresh to order

Amazing and dessert was delicious - Edit
Often times, even if a restaurant, like the wooden monkey, has great entrées and options for vegans, the dessert options are minimal or sometimes not existent. In this case, the entrée was delicious and the dessert option was one of the best ever - chocolate silken tofu torte.
Read moreService was also great and food was locally sourced (that’s their thing).
Pros: Locally sourced, Great vegan options, Amazing vegan dessert

locally sourced, knowledgeable staff, clear labels - Edit
title says it all! loved the labeled menu, appreciated our server even more who asked if the table had any allergies or dietary restrictions. almost all of the vegetarian dishes had the ability to be modified vegan, which makes for a rather large menu. and i personally enjoyed the fact that everything they serve is locally sourced.

Good options - Edit
Wasn’t sure when I first reviewed the menu, as options seemed limited. Once we got there, there were good options—not numerous, but more than enough choices, and everything we got was delicious. Pretty space, and good drinks, too. I had the seitan donair!

Local food, lots of vegan options - Edit
Lovely restaurant in downtown Halifax that supports local Nova Scotia farms with an emphasis on sustainability. Plenty of vegan options, which are clearly marked on the menu. The seitan donair is delicious and filling.

They had so many options on the menue that were vegan and vegetarian friendly. Additionally most things could easily be made vegan if not already. Had awesome cocktails and a tofu desert!

Needs improvement - Edit
I used to dine at The Wooden Monkey on Argyle back when there was only one vegetarian restaurant downtown and that place was part of that Sri Chinmoy cult.
Read moreWM made a solid chickpea veggie burger for the time and circumstances and then moved location to Grafton where they are now just as I was graduating. They also had fairly affordable bottles of organic wines.
I went back to see if it still held up and the answer is not really. I was afraid to get the lentil burger lest it disappoint my memory and instead got the vegan Donair, which was never an option in the 2000s. Sadly, the pita was stale and cold, as were much of the ingredients. It was largely void of vegetables until the last few bites and the coconut donair sauce was very sweet. The whole wrap was not substantial and not worth $17.50. Not good value, or flavour.
Tofu pie was also just so so. Sad this place isn’t what it used to be and for all the claims about environmental responsibility they still serve meat and dairy in mist menu items and use Daiya cheese (the worst) on vegan options.

Our best meal in Halifax - Edit
I was a bit apprehensive because this is not a vegan restaurant, but the experience exceeded my expectations. The vegan donair was probably the best use of seitan my partner and I have ever tasted and the lentil burger I ordered was delicious (note that it comes with a honey dressing, but the maple dressing I had was amazing). Service was kind and conscientious. They are clearly used to catering to different dietary preferences. I hope they will make a larger proportion of their menu items vegan in the future. I would absolutely go there again. Great food, great service, fantastic playlist.

Great place for folks of many different tastes - Edit
From the outside, you think it's just a popular restaurant with pub fare. But a quick glance at the menu, you realize you're in for a treat. Vegan options are plentiful and clearly marked. And all of the food is meant to be both fun and healthy. Sadly, they had just run out of their vegan donair, but we had the delicious curry with quinoa and a black bean burger. Both were really delicious!

AMAZING!!! Great place to take non-vegan family! - Edit
I took my non vegan ( and borderline judgemental) mother here, she got some meat dish. I convinced her to try my vegan donair meat, and she was WOWED. She always recommends it to people and suggests we go there all the time. (Not to mention that I personally love their food)

Great Place - Edit
Eaten here a few times at two different locations with large groups including Omnis. Enjoyed everything that I have had here—though one time I didn’t get the vegan nachos and wasn’t thrilled. Aside from this I would highly recommend this place they cater to just about every type of dietary restriction and are extremely accommodating!

Some of the best vegan food in Halifax can be found at the Wooden Monkey. Great donair and garlic fingers and the kimchi tacos were the most flavourful tacos I’ve ever had. Don’t miss the chocolate tofu pie for dessert!
