The Veggie Table has the best vegan food in Sendai - Edit
The food at Veggie Table is beyond great! All ingredients are locally grown (e.g., the rice is grown by the chef/owner’s grand papa in law!). The owner is originally from the US and speaks Japanese. There’s an English menu. It’s less than a mile of walk from Ichibancho.
Read morePros: Eggplant with home made BBQ sauce, The prices are very reasonable for the quality!, Locally grown fresh ingredients
Cons: NONE whatsoever!

Well-thought vegan cuisine - Edit
We had a starter and a main and shared a dessert in the end. Everything was super-tasty and very special. Menus change by season and ingredients are organic.

Delicious and fully vegan - Edit
This is a lovely vegan restaurant in Sendai.
Read moreThe food is great! We had two lunch menus with green godess salads (I loved the salad, my boyfriend found the dressing a bit sour but he is super sensitive with sour foods, so don't let his opinion bother you too much ;)), the pasta with vodka sauce (super delicious sauce with veggies and perfectly al dente pasta) and bbq eggplants with cauliflower mash (very good as well, served on a hot plate).
We also ordered two desserts which were great: Tiramisu and chocolate cream pie.
Everyone is super friendly and the service is very attentive.
The interior is pretty with a lot of art on the walls.
Check it out if you are im Sendai.
It's even more awesome givven that vegan options in Tohoku are not that ubiquitous

The Hidden Gem of Sendai - Edit
I really can’t say anything bad about this place. The atmosphere was excellent, quiet and simple. The food on the other hand was not. The chef/owner was very friendly and the hostess was also extremely friendly.
Read moreI had the “petite course” which includes a soup or salad, main and a soft drink (which I upgraded to a beer). And I couldn’t resist getting a side of the corn bread.
The food portions were a good size, the owner explains the food and its origins to you which was a nice touch. He did state the corn bread is the best in Japan and he was being humble. It might be some of the best corn bread ever.
Highly recommend this place if you are in Sendai!
Pros: Atmosphere!, Staff where awesome , Amazing food.

Amazing vegan food! - Edit
I visited The Veggie Table with two omnivore friends. We all loved it! I'd day this was the best meal I've had in Japan so far.
Read moreThe chef and co-owner is an American who has been living in Japan for over two decades and knows both English and Japanese. He is the only *chef* I've ever seen come to check in on his customers and ask how the food is in Japan. There is also Japanese staff. Usage of either language should be perfectly fine.
I had a Green Goddess salad, it was great. It had fewer leafy greens than I expected, instead having a larger variety of green things like edamame and pumpkin seeds. It also had a kick of vinegar and a green dressing. I forgot to take a picture of it.
I got the pasta dish. It was good, and I was surprised at how amazing the eggplant tasted as I usually don't like it. Similarly a friend who got the eggplant steaks said that they were really good.
The pasta dish is a bit spicy. I was fine with it but my Japanese friend felt the heat a lot more than I did.
My only complaint is that the pasta looked very pale, leading me to believe that it was made with refined flour.
The menu uses terms like "butter" and "ice cream" which makes one think it may not be vegan as there is not a disclaimer on it.
Pros: Tastes great!, Nice and interesting chef
Cons: Refined flour pasta, A bit pricy (but worth it)

Sendai Deserves This! Fully Vegan and Amazing - Edit
After all these years, there is finally a full-fledged vegan restaurant in Sendai that is out-of-this-world delicious.
Read moreI came here twice during my most recent trip to Sendai. Both times were incredible in terms of the amazing food that Chef Rick prepares.
To start, we tried their homemade bread and cornbread. I haven't had cornbread in years since they're often not vegan in the States. Boy was it truly a treat to be able to enjoy this and it was fluffy and delicious.
For the mains, I got to try all three of their spring collection of pasta, Thai Stir-Fried Tofu and Rice, and the Portobello Mushroom Steak. Each of these dishes were prepared with such thought to taste and presentation that I couldn't believe was coming from a restaurant in Sendai. The steak was piping hot and juicy, and the rice dish was hearty with a variety of flavors and textures.
We also can't forget about dessert. Their tiramisu was light and sweet, and you could get it with or without alcohol.
Chef Rick and the team have really created something great here in the City of Trees, and I'm so glad to be able to return to my former home and have somewhere like The Veggie Table to rely on for a fantastic plant-based meal.
Pros: Full vegan menu, Open later than other plant based cafes in town

The Veggie Table is a spectacularly delicious vegan restaurant nestled amongst the zelkovia trees of Jozenjidori, a swath of nature in downtown Sendai. The building is a year older than the chef, but the interior of the restaurant was built by his own hands, with help from his friends and family in the summer of 2023. The restaurant opened at the end of September, with much anticipation for an authentically vegan restaurant. The tables are natural wood, the walls are covered in plaster showing the "aji" or flavor, of the friends and family who helped finish the walls. There is copious seating. There are many green plants inside as a continuation of the tree-lined boulevard outside. Conscious thought and effort went into the planning and construction, even choosing vegan finishing waxes on the wood counters and tables The food is internationally inspired, locally sourced, and ridiculously delicious. It is 100% vegan, without exception, and without compromise. The menu will change seasonally, and on the chef's whim, as is his wont! Chef Rick was a farmer for many years, as he wanted to make the best food from the best ingredients. He's put his shovel and hoe down, dablbled with a hammer and trowel for a while, and has not picked up his pots and pans again! Watch out world, Sendai's going to be the new epicenter of vegan cuisine!

Pros: Ridiculously delicious, Satisfying portions, Not afraid of real flavor, herbs and spices!
Cons: The building doesn't hint at the warm interior.

Absolutely delicious! - Edit
I went with my non vegan friend and we both loved the food! Main course menu selection is a little small but the food is so good you don't need any more options. The owner/chef is passionate about what he does, is a native English speaker, and all around spread such positive vibes. I wish we had more time in this area so I could go back every day!

Sendai luck out - Edit
Partner and I were in Sendai for the day as we traveled up the country. This was the only place we could find for miles near our hotel and it was honestly really lucky have found it as it’s only been 4 months at the time of our visit. The gentleman running the show was very welcoming, we ordered a soup for starter with corn bread. Not tried corn bread before but I’d have eaten then lot it was so good!
Read moreMains was a mushroom wellington and green curry both were delicious and for desert we had a edamame ice cream which was pleasantly delightful and a lemon cake that hit the spot!
Place was pet friendly which is apparently quite rare in Japan so that was really cool. Gentleman running the place told us about all the dishes and how his family helped grow some of the ingredients which was a nice addition to the meal.
All in all definitely worth a visit
Pros: Great food, Good value for money, Friendly staff and pet friendly

Great vegan food - Edit
Writing this review nearly a month after visiting because it was a clear standout (this is also the first review I've felt compelled to write). Really nice food with good portions. I got the main course over a couple of visits and enjoyed all the mains and desserts that I had. Really friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere. Nice location to walk to and easy to get to from the loop bus and other local busses. Overall highly recommend😄

Must Try if you are in Sendai - Edit
Vegan restaurants can be few and far between here in Japan and it was a delight to find The Veggie Table for my short stay in Sendai. An open, spacious interior with a warm atmosphere invites you in to enjoy your choice of three main courses, soup or salad, and several desserts.
Read moreThe owner and chef was a permaculture farmer in the area for many years and knows good food! I had a hearty soup followed by a roasted veggie and creamed cannellini main dish. Both were superb, although a little more of the delicious squash would have brought no complaints from me! However, this allowed me room for a three scoop soy ice cream salvo along with a lemon berry cake. All made in house, the soy ice cream was hands down the best I've had. Quite possibly the best vegan ice cream I've ever had! Truly, a very skillful creation, totemo umai. It has a soy cream base that gives it an incredible density, but it was silky smooth as it melted in my mouth. Perfect sweetness and great flavor for all three vanilla, strawberry, and a edamame type styled according to a local delicacy (I forget the name). Each bite was a joy to be savored. The pie came with a full, healthy layer of whipped cream (similar in construction to the ice cream) and the pie was moist and delicious.
Rick, the owner, was very friendly and shared some of his story with me. He recommended some places for me to visit in the area, which was much appreciated. I wish this new restaurateur all the best!!

Great food and warm welcome - Edit
We had dinner at the Veggie Table. Located on the famous Jozenji-dori avenue, the place looks really nice - minimalist decor, yet lots of attention to little details. On the menu was a starter, a soup, two mains, a side dish and one dessert. The salad for starters consisted of a mix of veg and nuts and was well seasoned, fresh and crisp. For mains, the ratatouille and socca really were flavoursome and totally hit the spot. The chocolate cake and red berries compote for dessert rounded up a fine meal.
Read moreWe got to chat with the owner/chef too who explained that the Veggie Table had only been opened for 10 days. Definitely worth the visit for any vegans (or not!) visiting Sendai.
Pros: Tatsy food, Chef speaks English , 100% vegan - no need to check for dashi or milk
TheVeggieTable
Thank you very much for your visit, and for your kind words. Coming from someone who knows a thing or two about ratatouille and socca, I really appreciate your compliment. And, I swear, on your advice I will never put oregano in my ratatouille again. What a faux pas!😁 Hopefully, we have the opportunity to serve you again in the future, if you happen to come back to Sendai. Safe and happy travels!

Best vegan food in Sendai - Edit
We visited the veggie table for dinner a few weeks after it opened. The place is a bit hidden away when you're just walking on the avenue but there was a sign pointing us in the right direction.
Read moreWe had a lovely salad for starters, squash orzo for main and a chocolate cake for dessert. Everything was so tasty and we were very satisfied after 3 courses.
After a week in Japan struggling to find good vegan restaurants (and ones that are open after 5/6pm!), this was a real treat. Definitely worthwhile visiting if you're Sendai!
Pros: Amazing food, Friendly service
TheVeggieTable
Thank you for coming in and for your kind words. We have only been open for less than 2 weeks now, but I've already met many travelers from abroad. This sort of reignites the wanderlust of my youth, but then I also remember how hard it was to find (any, let alone good!) vegan food where ever I went. I was always so grateful for those few hidden gems of vegan restaurants scattered around the cities of the world. I'm very happy that I can offer a little veggie respite in Sendai for the next wave of eager world travelers! Enjoy your time in Japan, and hopefully you have a chance to sit around The Veggie Table again sometime down the road...
