I went to The Trooper this evening excited to find another independent place with a vegan menu. I ordered a beetroot burger stating I wanted the vegan option which said it came with tomato relish and vegan cheese if given prior notice (which I hadn't done!). When it arrived it had what looked like grilled halloumi on top of the beetroot burger and a white sauce which looked like mayonnaise. When I questioned it, they told me it was 'vegetarian cheese' and when I explained that I didn't eat dairy they said that it was definitely vegan!! The owner was making a real scene about it and wouldn't go and check with the chef. I felt uncomfortable asking further as people were staring. I ate the burger and the cheese I'm pretty sure was halloumi. The sauce was mayo, not sure if vegan but I'd be surprised if it was. There was no tomato relish. I think perhaps they served me a vegetarian option rather than vegan but I wish they had gone to check rather than try to convince me otherwise. I won't eat here again, very disappointed.
