We discovered this place was just 10mins from our accommodation so decided to give it a go as it was newly vegan and it's good to support these places. We turned up, were seated and given a great vegan menu to choose from, consisting of 5 x entrees and 5 x mains and 5 x desserts. We placed our order only to have the waitress come back and tell us they have a new chef and he hasn't learnt any of the vegan dishes yet! We were super disappointed especially as I was keen to try the vegan shepherds pie! They instead made us a thai green curry and an Indian curry. Both were tasty but, were simply veggies in a curry sauce with rice. Not exactly value for money at £8-10 each. However they did have the vegan desserts as the cakes were pre made. So we had the chocolate tart and the Apple, cinnamon and hazelnut cake with soya custard both were delicious and gave us a more positive feel for the night. This place has potential, the vegan menu looked great. But perhaps call ahead first to make sure the chef can do vegan otherwise it's not as enjoyable. Lovely pub too, warm cosy feel to it. And the waitress was very apologetic, she felt very bad for us.

Pros: Good vegan menu, Good sized meals

Cons: New chef couldn't cook vegan, A little pricey

Excellent and welcome new entrant to Oxford's vegan scene

We first heard that The Tree was now offering a vegan menu when we were handed a leaflet at the recent Oxford Vegan Fair. We visited early April with 2 non-vegan guests who were impressed enough by the vegan menu to eat from it along with us.

I had the Malabar Tofu Curry which was excellent - really tasty, it must be one of the best curries I've ever had. My wife enjoyed the Vegan Shepherds Pie which came with a very generous portion of sweet potatoe chips. Our guests both selected from the vegan starters and enjoyed thier meal. A fine slice of apple pie with vegan custard filled any remaining gap.

We will return :)

Pros: Very good quality food nicely presented and served, A good range of vegan starters, mains and desserts, Reasonably priced for good quality food
