Lucky Find in the Dales

We were lucky to find a couple of free tables in this popular dales café at peak lunchtime in the holidays. We chose the very delicious felafel wraps and a sourdough hummus open sandwich with red cabbage and olives for my son. He loved the red cabbage, and the sandwich made what could have been an ordinary lunch into a hearty meal for him with its ginormous size and appetizing presentation. The side salad was presented nicely and had a few seeds in but was probably not needed as my wraps had a similar salad garnish. We didn't try the one vegan cake as it was very expensive. I feel that we ordered more than we wanted (his smoothie and the salad) and each item was quite steep. Next time I might try the other two places as we go to the Retreat quite a bit. It is better in Grassington midweek in the winter.

Pros: Sourdough bread with hummus , beautiful area

Cons: pricey

Best option in Grassington

Sadly this place isn’t as good for vegans as it used to be as a veggie cafe but it’s still the best option in the village for food.

I had the pea and mint soup and it was home made and delicious.

The food was outstanding

Happy Cow is brilliant! No more poring over menus outside cafes - we arrived in Grassington, looked on Happy Cow and found The Retreat so that’s where we went.
Lots of vegan options on the menu (and options to vegan use other many other items) and the serving staff were very friendly and helpful.
I only wanted something light (it was mid-afternoon) so I went for the Blackcurrant and Shortbread crumble Cake with vegan ice-cream. It. Was. Awesome! Absolutely loved it. When it arrived I thought it was a fairly small portion but as it turned out the portion size was perfect.
Will definitely visit again next time I’m in Grassington

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Friendly and helpful staff

Nice cafe

The burger was nice - a meaty burger with avocado and mushrooms - not my fave toppings but was still good. The caramel oat latte was delicious. Lots of cake choices too.

Nice place

Nice cafe in lovely Grassington- vegan options of a falafel wrap or a vegan burger. Could do with more vegan options really. Nice coffee. They had a vegan apple and pecan cake which I think was homemade - I didn’t try it as I was full but nice to have a vegan cake option!

Pros: Really friendly staff, Dog friendly

Cons: Only soya or coconut milk for coffee, Bit pricey

Good and average. 3.5 stars.

A few vegan options. Burger wasnt too bad, but not very flavourful. Drinks that we ordered, one of which was a coke, was just poured into a glass with no ice or lemon (or offer of). Friendly enough service. A little pricey for what you get. Small chip portion. Not memorable overall.

Disappointed

The food was lovely, as was the cafe itself. The service was also really good. So why just 3 stars? As I was paying I was talking to a member of staff about being vegan, making the reasonable assumption, in a veggie cafe, that she would be vegan or at least veggie. The opposite was true, she was actually a meat eater who fully supported the farming industry and went on to use the “personal choice” defence. I left the cafe feeling really down. Veggie/vegan places are supposed to be a haven away from this attitude. I hear this stuff every day, I certainly don’t want to hear it when I go to a veggie cafe.

Pros: Vegan cakes, Vegan mains, Vegan wines

Cons: Staff not veggie or vegan, No vegan wine by the glass

Great vegan selection

We stopped off for tea, smoothies and cake in the afternoon at this lovely cafe. There are lots of vegan options. There is no vegan symbol on the daytime menu but all of the staff we spoke to were very friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. We enjoyed it so much we booked a table at the Bistro for the following evening. There were four vegan options available in the evening (clearly labelled) all of which sounded great. Again the food was excellent and the staff were very helpful. The atmosphere in the evening was really nice too. They had added candles to the tables and cushions to the chairs. Highly recommended.

Great event no meal

Really friendly staff, very helpful, right up to speed with veg/vegan/gluten free options. Opened as evening bistro about a year ago but couldn’t make a go of it just as veg/vegan so added some meat and fish and are thriving - still offering great selection of veg/vegan.

Pros: Excellent food, Well balanced menu, Friendly staff

Cons: Bistro only open fri and sat eves (cafe everyday)

Lovely to find vegan food in a small town

We ended going here as I had a vague idea it existed but wasn't sure if my husband would be catered for being gluten free. I need not have worried everything is clearly marked on the menu whether it is veggie, vegan or gluten free.
The food was quick even though they were really busy and we they allow dogs in, bonus for us.

Pros: Good variety of special diets catered for., Very friendly couldn't be more welcoming., Allow dogs in.

Cons: Can think of any.

Delicious Vegan Options

The Retreat Tearooms is a vegetarian cafe during the day and bistro on Friday and Saturday evenings and happily caters for vegans and those with allergy requirements. I and my husband visited on a Friday evening and both chose the aubergine stack to start ,with houmous replacing the goats cheese for myself and it was a tasty start to the meal, as I love all the components of the dish, so it was a winner.

Main course was a gluten free gourmet soya burger for my husband, who said it was hard to distinguish from a meat burger, it had relish, salad, chips and pickled gherkin and he struggled to finish it all. I chose an adaptation of the filo parcel dish, with a vegan curry sauce and chips, again it was delicious, the parcel was packed with vegetables and I loved the sauce. I was pretty full by this time, but grilled peppered peaches, pistachio crumb and raspberries, were impossible to resist it was topnotch. My husband chose white chocolate and ginger cheesecake, which he could not fault either.

My only niggle is the wine list, with no vegan wines labelled, although you would presume that all the wines would be vegetarian, but this was not clear either. However I kicked off with a bottle of Corona and we continued with wine I knew was vegan, but maybe this is something The Retreat will look at in the future.

All in all a lovely place and from hearing conversations in the dining room, most of the diners near us, were not even vegetarian but loved the food...a compliment to chef. We would definitely return.

Pros: Vegan Options, Vegan Friendly, Allergies & Intolerances Catered For

Cons: No clear labelling of vegan wines

Great cafe and very friendly owner

I ate in this cafe a couple of weeks ago. I only had the soup of the day but i can tell you it was really tasty and had that great home made taste about it. The owner made us feel very welcome and although she was quite busy she still took time out to chat with us about various stuff. All in all in really was a beautiful experience visiting this cafe. Thanks Retreat x

Pros: Great tasting food, Friendly atmosphere, Compassionate about life!

Good Veg Food and Friendly Service

We often take a trip to Grassington to fill up on the large Yorkshire portions, I recommend the pie, chips and salad. Large slices of cake are good and filling. However, have a back up plan, on our last visit, despite phoning ahead and being told they were open until 4pm that day and would be serving food, we arrived at 3:30pm and were told food was no longer being served. Most disappointed as we could see plates of food still coming out of the kitchen and we travelled some distance to go to the Retreat Cafe. My partner is Vegan, so they got nothing until we got home.

Pros: Portions, Friendly, Location

Cons: Opening Times, Vegan Cake, Fresh, not frozen chips

Lovely caff

This little place is great - they support an animal sanctuary and they allow dogs in which is great entertainment. As for the food I had a smashing Brazil Nut Pie with thick cut chips and salad and a cup of tea with soy milk... I wanted pudding but I was popping after the very generous helpings of main course.

just down the road is Natures Way a delightful little wholefood shop.. try that too.

Pros: Friendly staff/inexpensiv, Lots of vegan choice, Dogs allowed!!!

Cons: Can get crowded

Looking forward to a return visist

A wonderfull little village and a great cafe with a large selection of food. Being able to ask for soya milk in you latte is great and having the option of a couple of vegan cakes. The food here is well cooked and the service very friendly. They even do a tasty take out lunch for walkers/bikers etc.

Pros: Soya milk, great service, healthy
