Tasty takeaway

Had the Veg&Chickpea Curry twice recently after long days on the hills. Packed with veg and generous portion of chips. Will try the Vegan Haggis next time.

Pros: Good mix of healthy curry and chips, Good portion size, Safe systems in place

Cons: Over £9 for the curry and £2 for a can of IrnBru.

Carbs

Stopped on the way home from a hill walk and they had two options limited due to COViD.
If was just what you needed after a long walk, a decent stop.

Pros: Staff, Location

Enjoyable takeaway

My husband and I were looking for a cafe to get takeaway from while on holiday in Tyndrum. I had the vegan haggis and chips which was very tasty and filling. I was impressed by the thought the staff had put into keeping customers safe during the Covid crisis - you can order online and collect from the cafe carpark.

Pros: Tasty food, Good portion size, Good takeaway system

Cons: Limited vegan options

Good for the location

I was a bit worried there would be no vegan food options this far out in nowhere, but happily surprised to find this place! I had their vegan haggis (!) which was good.

The best in Tyndrum, but not as nice as it sounds

This cafe describes itself as something very special by carefully choosing ingredients - what you get is rather some average pub grub. The haggis in pepper sauce is nice, particularly after a strenuous walk (of which there are a lot in the area!).

The atmosphere is strange, but the cafe is always packed and you sometimes have to queue to order.

Beers are very expensive, better go to another place in Tyndrum for drinks.

Pros: Best food in Tyndrum, Good after a long walk

Cons: Describes itself healthier/more special than it is

Very good food in the National Park.

Stopped in for lunch on our way south through the National Park. I had low expectations finding vegan food but I love being wrong. There were 3 options of sweets and one was also GF. Several menu options and I treated myself to a homemade granola bar. They were busy and food took a while but the Homemade Spiced Veggie and Lentil burger with vegan cheese was delish. The chips are fried in an exclusive frier so much less chance of cross contamination.

Great place to stop on the journey

I was impressed with how many vegan options there were. It wasn't what I expected in rural Scotland. I wish I'd been hungrier because there were at least 3 vegan cake options as well as a fair few savoury meals too. Other than the fact they serve meat they seem environmentally conscious too and they have some lovely bird feeders you can watch while you eat.

Many vegan options

This cafe has many vegan options especially compared to some of the other establishments along the West Highland Way. Options included (when we were there) soup, chips, veggie burger, curry. They also had several vegan cakes and cappuccino/tea with soy milk. For breakfast they had a vegan full Scottish breakfast with vegan Haggis, which we really enjoyed.

Pros: Many vegan options, clearly marked on menu, Vegan pies/cakes, Full Scottish breakfast with vegan haggis

Vegan options in Tyndrum

Handy place to stop for vegan options in Tyndrum. They had a few vegan mains including burger and chips and a curry, and some cakes and plant milks for your tea.

Avoid the burger!

While walking the West Highland Way I was really looking forward on getting proper vegan food there on my lunch break in Tyndrum! I was somehow expecting something else… From the name I concluded that they would have fresh and healthy food, but when I saw the menu I realized that their signature dish is in fact Fish & Chips. Yes, they also have a vegan section on their menu. You can have vegan haggis, grilled vegetables, a chickpea curry or a lentil burger. I opted for the lentil burger and it was the worst burger I have ever had. The patty had the consistency of “heated in the microwave after being frozen” and tasted of nothing. Similar with the bread. My side salad first came with coleslaw (not a vegan one) – sure, I didn’t ask for a vegan side salad, but when someone orders the vegan burger with vegan cheese instead of the same vegetarian burger with cow’s cheese and also orders coffee with soy milk… Well, if you go there, make sure to state you want everything vegan. The vegan salad was good, though.
I didn’t like the atmosphere too much. It is more like a fast food restaurant. I don’t like the fact that they claim to cater for all dietary needs but have a surcharge for soy milk, which is not so common in Scotland.
Anyway, I’d probably go there again if near Tyndrum again and give them a second chance. After all, they have some other vegan options I haven’t tried, and they even would have had 2 different vegan cakes when I was there!

Nice stopping place on the way to the highlands.

Clean and cosy. Friendly staff. Not a vegan cafe but vegan breakfast/food and vegan cakes clearly marked and very good. Look home made. Dog friendly too.

Pros: Vegan options clearly marked, Dog friendly, Plenty parking - disabled parking

Refreshing Outlook with Veg options

Traveling with 4 omnivores in the Scottish Highlands can make it difficult for a vegetarian to eat well. I found myself in this position recently.

Stopping at The Real Food Cafe I assumed it would be another night of baked potato or a simple order of chips (fries). Miraculously, The Real Food Cafe has a specific vegetarian section to their menu - featuring lentil and vegetable pasties, falafel, a veggie and chickpea curry over chips, and veggie rostis in a bun - plus a number of salads.

Beyond that, the restaurant is literally decorated in literature about their environmentally friendly aims and the steps they have taken to improve their sustainability in that regard. I was smiling as I ate my vegetable and chickpea curry.

The staff is remarkably friendly and the space very welcoming - great for families with their long, high tables and stools overlooking the open kitchen. They also have a nice desert selection.

While Scotland may be a rough place for a vegetarian, The Real Food Cafe, at least, makes an effort to keep them in mind which I appreciate a great deal.

Pros: Great Staff, Conscious of Environment, Several Veg Options

Cons: Not 100% veg
