Disappointingly average food - Edit
I first came here two years ago and remember enjoying my food (although I don't remember what it was). Before coming this time I had read recent reviews and looked at the menu online and was excited to try the so-called eggplant parmesan as I loved this fish as a vegetarian. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. It was bland but also very oily, and as a previous reviewer mentioned recently, I actually felt ill after from all the oil, even though I could only eat about half of it. I have seen in reviews here the staff mentioned as friendly, but as two Irish people we were ignored except for the basics and rushed out at the end - all the attention being given to international tourists who are expected to tip big (which is not the custom in Ireland).
Read moreIt's really two stars for the food and atmosphere and an extra one for the separate plant-based menu and kitchen. I personally won't be returning.
Pros: Separate plant-based kitchen, Separate plant-based menu
Cons: Oily bland food, Unfriendly staff , Expensive

Delicious dinner - Edit
I had the mushroom bruschetta as a starter and the pesto pasts with eggplant as a main dish and it was both very delicious!

Generous serves in a beautiful pub - Edit
The pub is a lovely place to dine and I enjoyed having a booth to ourselves. They had just changed to a new menu when we arrived and one item I wanted to order (cauliflower wings) wasn't available that day, so we just ordered another starter and a main to share. That was surprisingly substantial though!
Read moreThe basil pesto with crumbed eggplant parmigiana and cheese sauce was very tasty (although the eggplant retained a lot of the vegetable oil from being deep-fried and I felt a little unwell afterwards). The mushroom bruschetta was huge as a starter and generously topped with almond cream and a variety of seasoned mushrooms. Absolutely delicious. There's also a very knowledgeable bar person who can help you select some great whiskey to try.

This is a great place to eat vegan in an otherwise difficult area. We had the basil pasta with fried eggplant and Korean tacos and it was all devine. Great service too.

For a Non Vegan Place, They Really Know How to Do Vegan Food - Edit
This was such a treat when visiting the area! Probably the best meal I had throughout my time in Ireland (I had a lot of good food on the trip). My non-vegan partner said one of the best things they had on our trip was the Truffled Wild Mushroom Bruschetta (11) and I adored my Nut Roast Tart (18.50), something I wouldn't typically go for. If you're in the area, give them a try!

Would give five stars if I could - Edit
Title is something I rarely say about non-vegan establishments, but this one has an entirely separate plant-based kitchen which I really appreciate. A top-three meal from our whole trip. Bit of an upscale vibe, delicious food—get the mushroom bruschetta appetizer if they have it!

Nice setting, good vegan food - Edit
Three course vegan menu available on request (in addition to 'main' menu). Food was overall tasty and varied though on the expensive side considering options and portion size. Cauliflower 'steak' at €18 euros was just taking advantage as other posters have said.
Read moreCalled by again on October 13 for dessert, got the only vegan dessert they have. Luckily it was CREME BRULEE! Amazing! So delicious and creamy, not too sweet and with that classic crack of the carmelised sugar as you dipped your first spoon in. Belissimo💕

Everything was delicious and so gourmet. I went there twice, I wish it could have been more. A few vegan options but amazing ones. Staff was very professional, friendly and efficient. Never had a vegan crème brûlée before and it was incredible, I missed it after being vegan for 4 years.

Vegan section of the menu! - Edit
We had dinner at the Porterhouse and were happy to see a fairly large vegan section of their menu! Our waitress was very knowledgeable about each dish and was helpful as we were deciding what to order. We really appreciated that the vegan options went beyond the usual curry or pasta. Our favorites were the pumpkin soup and the mushroom bruschetta. The only miss was the tartlet- the pastry did not taste cooked all the way through.

Mwah - not my cup of tea - Edit
Went there with 2 adults and one teenager. Only 2 out of 3 vegan main courses available. No vegan desserts. The gnochi was real nice. the burgers a drama. Made of beans and sweet potato, completely fell apart and way to little seasoning / taste. Expensive for what you get. For the same amount or lower, try Milano of Lana in Killarny. There even is a McDonalds with plant based burger and Subway with many plant based options.

Separate vegan menu in cute pub - Edit
Really enjoyed our dinner here. The pub is an unusual layout - all little booths - but it gave it a really nice atmosphere. They have what they describe as a "limited vegan menu" which you just need to request. I think there was 3 starters and 2 mains. I went for the winter tartlet for the main and was really pleased with it. On the face of it, it looks expensive but the portions are massive. The tartlet was much bigger than I was expecting with a filo pastry base, beetroot, sundried tomato, vegan pesto and vegan cheese and a side of beetroot hummus and a herby nut cream. It was a really well balanced and tasty plate of food

They had a reduced menu available when I visited in December 22 and they usual menu was not in offer. Food is quite expensive but I was happy to have an option to dine😄I would recommend this place if visiting Killarney for drinks and pub food.

Highly recommended - Edit
We highly recommend a visit at the Porterhouse and would have given five stars if possible.
Read moreThis is a very special restaurant and we enjoyed our visit so much. One reason were the staff members who were attentive and welcoming without being over the top. Another reason was the wonderful interior of the restaurant. We were seated in a booth which was so quaint but also provided some privacy. We loved the historic atmosphere and the decor.
The menu seems to change from time to time - the one we were given was different from the one we saw online and also different from the photos on HappyCow. More important, though, there were three vegan starters, three vegan mains and two vegan desserts. My husband chose the baked tofu and cabbage roll while I had the cauliflower steak and polenta. Both dishes were truly excellent. We then had the rhubarb crumble and the chocolate tarte for desserts, sharing both between us, and these were divine.
The prices are a bit high but this is totally justified because of the high quality of the food and the overall standard of the restaurant.
It is a very popular place, so you should book a table to avoid disappointment.
We had a truly special evening here!

Don't take advantage of vegans! - Edit
There's some steaks at The Porterhouse that are 20 odd euro. There's very fancy steaks that cost €40. Then there's a piece of cauliflower that they bake, call it a steak and charge €18.
Read moreI don't know much about steak. But I do know cauliflower is very cheap. Don't get me wrong, it was very tasty. But a very small portion, and vastly overpriced. Even 12 euro would be a huge mark up, and would pay for the time it took to cook it up. Pass on financial savings to vegans!
Cons: Expensive
