Tasty and flavorful

It was my first time ordering from this restaurant and it was great. I love Peranakan cuisine but very difficult to find a place serving the dishes for vegans and vegetarians. We ordered the Tok Panjang Bibik set for 6 of us - more than enough for 6 hungry guys.

Pros: Lots of options for vegans and vegetarians , Tasty and authentic , Wide variety & big portions

Cons: A bit costly , Better to dine in than takeout

Best peranakan vegetarian food

The Peranakan is not a vegetarian restaurant per se, but they have an intensive vegetarian menu both ala carte and sets. I like that the dishes are flavorful without being salty or over seasoned. They used traditional mock meat on some dishes though, something for improvement.

Pricey for meh food

I brought my family to eat here; I had very high expectations and hoping to impress everyone with the vegan offering because of the high ratings. I am sorely disappointed, the food was just meh compared to all the veg food I've ever eaten and it costs 48-68 per pax...crazy! I could feel their disappointment at the value of what was paid. Will not come again.

Cons: Super expensive, No free flow drinks e.g. tea or water

Vegan High Tea - Flavourful and Beautiful

I tried the vegan high tea set at The Peranakan during a 50% off promotion.

The main was dry laksa, which consisted of chewy yellow noodles with a deep spicy seafood aroma topped with a firm but bouncy prawn. This dish was impressively realistic and was the star of the show.

The savoury platter consisted of petite servings of a variety of Peranakan dishes.
Nasi ulam: Spicy herbal rice. This dish was not sufficiently fragrant in my opinion.
Kueh pie ti: Delicate shell filled with juicy stuffing.
White bread with hae bi hiam: The pumpkin floss did not successfully mimic hae bi hiam as it was not spicy and lacked a seafood aroma. Nonetheless, the pumpkin floss had a satisfying crunchy and powdery texture, such that this dish was reminiscent of meat floss sandwiches.
Popiah goreng: Crispy deep fried spring rolls with sweet vegetable stuffing.
Mutton rendang kongbak pao: Soft steamed bun topped with a spicy stew of potatoes and mock meat.

The sweet platter contained an array of Peranakan desserts.
Pulot enti kelapa: Glutinous rice with crunchy grated coconut. This dish was somewhat bland for a dessert.
Kuih kosui: Chewy and mildly sweet gula melaka kuih.
Apom bokwa with pisang pengat: Rice flour cake sitting on a pool of creamy sweet gravy made from banana, gula melaka, and coconut cream.
Apom balek durian: Traditional pancake with a tastefully sweet durian paste.
Durian pengat: Dainty cup of a mixture of two types of thick durian paste with rich complex flavours. We saved the best for the last!

Overall, the food was flavourful and beautifully plated. The restaurant had a nice ambience with intricate flamboyant decorations. There was also a small shop and museum gallery.

Not great value for its price

The ambience of the restaurant is pleasant - in a typical Peranakan style.
However, I found the portions fairly small given the price they charge.
Love Hut in Joo Chiat or Whole Earth are better options to try Peranakan dishes.

Delicious!

I’d give this restaurant 5 stars, but the app isn’t letting me since it’s not fully veg. The restaurant has a separate veg menu (I believe all vegan?) and the food was really delicious. It’s a beautiful restaurant with a lot of character, and the staff was very friendly. I’d definitely come back!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Great atmosphere, Friendly staff

Peranakan Food

This spot has a secret vegetarian menu which is also vegan and which is not printed out. The server was so friendly and nice and although I asked for the vegetarian menu he was hip enough to warn me about dairy in the cabbage soup broth. Love the fancy decor. Seems like a nicer place but also fun music playing. I asked for the menu and he wrote it down. I asked for further description as I’m from the US and had no idea what the dishes were. He was happy to explain.

I ordered the Lemongrass and pandan hot tea pot to drink, a dish described as having a coconut paste that was highly recommended, and ladies fingers in a brown sauce. Ladies fingers are a green vegetable.

The coconut dish turned out to be dumplings. Really loved them. The lady fingers turned out to be okra with a sweet and savory sauce topped with shallots. They also have spring rolls and a variety of other sauces you can choose from. Eggplant and okra can come this way but you have to order them separately so you don’t get a variety of vegetables.

Pros: Very friendly service, Great atmosphere, fun, Feels like a local experince

Cons: Veggies come separately
