Pretty busy, great taste

We made reservations for dinner last minute, so we didn't have to elbow the other 50 tables or so to get in, and we still saw a few 2-seating tables free, but just know that this place is packed firing dinner, maybe lunch is more chill. Great food, glad to have learned new Malaysian traditional dishes. We tried the wok mushrooms, sayor masak, and sayor otak, and we liked them all.

Excellent

Really busy on a Wednesday night so I thought it must be good and it didn't disappoint. Ample vegan options. Entre was super tasty veg roasted in a banana leaf. And one of best samosa for ages - lovely fresh spices incl lemongrass. Mains was an amazing eggplant dish.

Pros: Ample vegan options , Flavour you can't usually get, Nice views

Cons: It is expensive, but worth it

Amazing Malaysian food, Darling Harbour views

The Malaya is one of my absolute favourite restaurants in the city. I’ve been there many times and have never been disappointed. I’ve also taken plenty of customers there and the environment is conducive to corporate lunches and conveniently next to the CBD and Barangaroo. They have plenty of vegan options, a vegan banquet and the food is absolutely divine. Great views over Darling Harbour and the staff are very friendly. They have often been able to accomodate for last minute reservations, I can highly recommend this place.

Pros: Lots of vegan options and vegan banquet , Upmarket restaurant , Darling Harbour views

great Malaysian food with veg options

The food here at The Malaya is classic Malaysian food. However, the setting is quite contemporary with its large balcony overlooking Darling Harbour. It's an upmarket restaurant with veg options and fantastic wine pairing.

So far, I tried Vegetable San Choy Bow, Salt and Pepper Cauliflower, Samosa, Sayor Otak, Szechuan Eggplant, Vegetable Singapore Noodles, Ma Po Tofu, Sayor Masak Lemak and Roti Canai (pan-fried Malay flat bread).

Vegetable San Choy Bow
Water chestnut, onion, mushroom, carrot and shallot stir-fried and served in a lettuce leaf. This may be the messiest thing to eat but it tastes sensational.

Salt and Pepper Cauliflower (highly recommended, by the way)
Floretts of cauliflower lightly battered, deep-fried and tossed in fresh chilli, salt, cracked black pepper and shallots. Always liked this dish however be careful with the chilli; they bite.

Samosa
A mixture of potato, carrot, onion and spices wrapped in a light pastry skin and deep-fried. One of the nicest samosas we have ever had.

Sayor Otak
Silken tofu topped with a blend of eggplant, mushroom, tomato, lemongrass and chilli paste, wrapped in a banana leaf and barbequed. This dish has layers and each layer is interesting once revealed.

Pros: interesting dishes

Cons: expensive

A delicious feast

We enjoyed a really nice meal at the Malaya this week! Their vegetarian banquet is all vegan and the food is tasty! I would highly recommend the Szechuan Eggplant which is crispy, sticky and delicious

Pros: Decent variety of vegan options , Nice location , Attentive staff

Cons: It’s a bit dear, Can be touristy in that area, Parking is a bit of a pain
