Serves meat, vegan options available. Located in the quaint Montague Bookmill in a former grist mill in Montague, this bar and cafe overlooks the gentle fall of the Sawmill River. Offers sandwiches, salads, hot drinks and beer & wine, and sources local products and many that are organic. Vegans can order the tofu sandwich on (sourdough bread with peanut sauce and sauerkraut), and the warm brown rice salad. Try the maple balsamic salad dressing. Note: Peanut sauce contains honey. Open Mon-Sun 8:00am-9:00pm. Open Mon-Sun until 10pm.

Not worth it - Edit
If you're going to the Book Mill for a nice read-and-eat type of day, good luck to you because there is nothing here for vegans but a salad. The compromise they made for me today, when I learned that the peanut-ginger sauce in fact contains honey, was to give me a tofu sandwich with just peanut butter on it. It tasted about as good as you would expect unseasoned, unpressed tofu with peanut butter (and cabbage) on top to taste. Definitely won't be going there again.

Honey in 2 of 3 "vegan" items - Edit
The tofu sandwich and peanut-ginger noodles both use a pre-made (at the restaurant) peanut sauce that has honey, but for years I and friends had been told these items are vegan. A few days ago I asked what items are vegan again to double check, and found out about the honey in those items. This means that there's only *one* vegan entree, the warm brown rice salad. It's yummy but not super filling. I'm frustrated that this is often mentioned as a great vegan-friendly option in the area, when it is not - and that vegan folks have been mislead, even if unintentionally!
Read moreIn the past they have had some vegan baked items (usually cupcakes) made by another cafe, but they don't seem to be doing that anymore/for now.
With the smallest tweaks this could be a great vegan friendly place!
Pros: Waterfall view (sit indoors by windows), Indoor & outdoor seating options, Proximity to the Bookmill
Cons: Only *one* vegan and it's a salad, Not always knowledgeable about what's vegan

Cute little nook - Edit
I had frequented this place many times before I was vegan and when I was still a student - it hasn’t changed one bit. Three stars not for the lack of atmosphere and overall gemütlichkeit but because there really were only 2 vegan options. We had the tofu sandwich and the peanut udon - both were great!

Limited vegan options, beautiful place - Edit
Can we get the description updated? The udon noodles and the tofu sandwich both have a peanut sauce with contains honey. If they updated the recipe of the sauce this place would be a lot more vegan friendly. We got the warm rice salad with tofu but it would have been nice to have multiple options. We also had a vanilla cupcake but it was very dry.

What A Cute Little Place - Edit
I loved coming here. I got the peanut ginger udon noodles & a vegan cupcake! Food was delicious & the view was incredible. It's like it's own little village with a book store & fine arts & crafts store right on site. So quaint!

quaint, romantic, fun, comfortable & yummy - Edit
I love a trip to the Killigrew for the comfortable, cozy ambiance and the tasty food. The dining area overlooks the river, and there is outdoor seating for fair weather days. Although there are only a few vegan items on the menu, I love them all and do not tire of ordering them. My favorite is usually the warm brown rice salad, but I also adore the sandwich that has tofu, peanut sauce and sauerkraut (who knew that would be such a delectable combination) that comes with a side salad. Each meal is sizable, filling and delicious.
Read moreThe Killigrew is always the perfect place to bring friends, a date, or go alone with books, journals or a laptop (though the dining area has laptop-free zone times during peak business hours). There is a long community table where larger groups can sit, and there is room to play games or cards. The staff are usually very friendly, and there is usually great background music playing.
Unfortunately the Killigrew seems to have stopped keeping soymilk on hand for coffee & tea, but they do stock fresh vegan cupcakes from the favorite local Oh Sweet Mama's vegan bakery. Hot tea, cider, cold drinks such as local kombucha and soda, and coffee, beer & wine are always available.
This place is worth the trip.
Pros: Beautiful location, Delicious food, Cozy comfortable atmosphere
Cons: Only a few vegan options
