Excellent restaurant - Edit
Sophisticated, lively restaurant with great service.
Read moreWhen you walk through the doors the staff ask you whether you require the vegetarian or vegan menu. Options are clearly labelled, and incredibly creative. I went for the lentil and aubergine dish, which was well presented and so flavourful. In addition I ordered a side of broccoli and my mum ordered chips. Everything was cooked to perfection, and seasoned perfectly. To drink the blood orange spritz was my beverage of choice. This was refreshing.
It should be noted that there is a 10 percent service charge to the bill, and the menu itself is on the pricey side. So for me this is one to try every now and then.
The last thing that i strongly recommend is reserving a table, as it is popular.
Pros: Creativity, Flavourful, Sophisticated vibe
Cons: Price, Recommended to make reservation

Wish it was more reliable - Edit
The menu varies and there is always at least one vegan option but it doesn't tend to be very good. The staff will also not great with dealing with vegan food and sometimes add sources to the side of your meal that aren't vegan like mayonnaise. It's nice if they get it right but they don't reliably do that.

Great Asian salad - Edit
I would return here just for this salad. It was fresh and flavourful, great combination of textures too!
Read moreI was presented with a veggie and vegan menu with more vegan options than I expected from a chain. Staff were excellent and very accommodating.
I had the Asian salad as a starter and mushroom burger as a main (served with thick cut chips). I didn’t have room for a pudding.
Pros: Helpful staff
Cons: Tip already on bill.

Served me non vegan mayo on vegan option - Edit
They served me a £15 salad that marked as vegan with basically a whole jar of mayo. The mayo was not vegan and the dish was not supposed to have mayo on it. Just not worth trying.

Disappointing food, nice cocktails - Edit
The Ivy has a separate vegetarian/vegan menu with a number of vegan options but I wouldn't eat here again.
Read moreI ordered the Avocado and Tomato Cocktail to start. There was way too much sauce, which just didn't taste nice - I couldn't eat it and I'm not usually a fussy eater.
For the main, I had the Tossed Asian Salad. It was nice and looked pretty, but it needed some noodles to turn it into a main dish - I wondered if they had served me the 'starter' version instead (as it appears twice on the menu). It was just expensive stir fried veggies and I was still hungry.
I wouldn't recommend for vegans - there are many better vegan menus in Edinburgh.
The positives - the restaurant is beautiful, non-vegan friends seemed to enjoy their meals and the staff were great - very helpful with cocktails (our server knew which ones were vegan or could be made vegan). The cocktails we had were delicious.

Only 2 vegan options for main. Disappointing. - Edit
So there was only 2 vegan main options one being curry the other being salad (what a cop out!!) And the only dessert being sorbet. How disappointing.

Vegetarian/vegan menu available - Edit
Many delicious options for food and bev. The arancini with truffle cheese was amazing. Zucchini fries too. Everything we tried was good and there were many more we wanted to try. Great location on St. Andrews Square. Service was also fantastic.

Wasn’t wowed - Edit
Interior is as you would expect, lovely, it is the ivy but the menu wasn’t much to jump around about! It was really nice to have a full vegan menu and I’m very grateful for that however I was slightly disappointed by the the options, I definitely expected more from the ivy. The food was nice but maybe I hoped for something a bit more exciting!

Nice for a treat - Edit
It's great that The Ivy on the Square has a separate menu for vegetarians and vegans. Most of the menu is vegetarian and vegan options are clearly marked.
Read moreIt’s the Ivy, so you can imagine that the food doesn’t come cheap, but the overall dining experience is very good. I particularly enjoyed the warm Asian salad and, even though it was a bit on the pricey side, the Keralan curry was creamy and comforting.
The service was also second-to-none. There was a bit of a mix-up with our order, where they brought out a vegetarian butternut squash risotto instead of the vegan roast butternut squash with mixed grains. I wouldn’t expect a mistake like that to be made at The Ivy, but to give the staff their credit they were incredibly apologetic when they realised their error and rectified it within minutes.
The fact that you can only order from the vegetarian and vegan menu at certain times of day is also a bit of sticking point for me. It would be nice if they extended the timings, or added more clearly labelled vegan options to their other menus.
But overall, very happy that a mainstream place like the Ivy is catering to a vegan diet.
Pros: Excellent service
Cons: Vegan menu not available at all times
