Decent vegan options - Edit
This place has multiple vegan options that are clearly indicated. Our server was very cognizant of what was vegan and not. All the food was good, nothing amazing. Really cool atmosphere.
Read moreNo step to enter. And ADA stalls in gendered restrooms. However, the bathrooms from the front main entrance are down three steps. There are likely other ways to the restroom, but this was our first time here.

Great spot. A bit more upscale, but not too fancy. Pretty big plates. Probably half the menu is vegan. Good drinks too. Super pleased with everything we ordered and definitely will return here—great type of place for a date night or similar.

The Hollow is unpretentious and professional. Plenty of room for improvement but things are really good just as they are. Had my birthday dinner here and my partner and I had several different appetizers. All were great except the brussel sprouts which were literally drowned in maple syrup. The main courses were excellent and the pasta and salads were also on par. Definitely reccommend giving them a shot.

Vegan reuben 😍😍 - Edit
The appetizers we ordered (seitan wings & fried “mozzarella”) left a lot to be desired. The presentation was sloppy, and the flavor was bland. We did not have high hopes for our entrees, but they were phenomenal and tasted like they came from an entirely different kitchen. It was the first actually delicious vegan reuben I have ever had. Most places I’ve been to simply omit the non-veg ingredients, but they did not leave a single thing out, and every element was delicious. The sandwiches were huge and came with an equally huge portion of fries. At $14, it was enough food for two meals.

I had the hummus board which was good, peppers on the side were delicious! For my main course, I ordered the quesadilla made vegan with “chicken”. The overall taste was good and salsa for dipping was perfect. However, the “chicken” itself was quite dry.

I got vegan buffalo wings and vegan Reuben, both of which were very salty, much too salty. My omni wife's food was also too salty and she wasn't very thrilled. The wings themselves were like dense nuggets, which was ok and texture was good; sauce was basically Frank's which is classic I suppose but didn't make me say "wow" and the saltiness started to build after two. The Reuben was very heavy on sauerkraut (which was salty).
Read moreFrom what I read on other reviews, this isn't a common issue so not sure what may have occurred, but best naive guess from an outsider would be that a new cook read tsp as tablespoon for salt on recipe cards. We debated asking to send back food but ultimately didn't want more food, just something to drink, so finished the water and paid our tab. Service was very nice and attentive.
Lots of options that I didn't try though and location was really nice. I might return if in the area again, but probably only after exhausting other local options.

The food was excellent. My husband was looking forward to the vegan reuben since we were still in Sweden planning out trip & he was not disappointed! (We were visiting family in the states.) Very cute location too for just getting drinks & appetizers or for a full date. The brussel sprouts were amazing! Definitely give it a go if you are in the area!

5/22: Returned when visiting my sister and were given dairy spinach & artichoke dip instead of vegan even though we clarified 3 times on the phone. It looked (and tasted…yes I took 2 scoops before my sister tried and said it was definitely not vegan) different than last time. We called and a different girl clarified that the hot one (the one we got) was not vegan and the guy on the phone had them backwards. The cold one is the vegan one. They refunded us for the dip but that’s a disgusting and unacceptable mistake especially because people have dairy allergies. Of course then we were disgusted and couldn’t enjoy anything because we were worried that we had been given other things with dairy or meat. It’s a shame because the food is good but a really gross mistake.
Read more3/22: Returned to the hollow after almost a year and a half since we had last been there and enjoyed even more than last time. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip and mozzarella bites appetizers, a vegan Reuben, and a vegan quesadilla. Everything was so delicious and we truly enjoyed everyone so much. Will definitely return next time I’m back in Albany.
8/20: Got the Reuben and mozzarella wedges. Mozz was incredible but marinara needed some work. Reuben was good but sauerkraut had a weird flavor. I’ve never had a traditional meat Reuben (this was my first one ever) and I enjoyed it but not sure how it compares to the traditional kind that people may have eaten pre-vegan.

Great service, might need a reservation for dinner. We had the vegan pulled pork sandwich which wasn’t jackfruit (!). I’d say it was more of a sloppy Joe, not the most appealing appearance, but flavors were good. Sweet and kind of cinnamony. Husband had the vegan Reuben which was very tasty but way too salty for me. Sandwich breads and vegan cheese on the Reuben were fantastic. Our server saved us a slice of the vegan chocolate cake, which was the size of a mini loaf and smothered in chocolate and raspberry sauce. Pretty yummy, tasted like something your sister would bake if she tried to bake vegan for your birthday. Next time I’d order other things.

An Albany Jewel - Edit
My partner and I are regular patrons. The Hollow is one of the nicest restaurants in Albany. The vegan options are integrated into the main menu instead of being exiled to the back page. The smallish menu has something for nearly everyone’s taste. Be sure to checkout the cocktails. The staff and kitchen are well versed in plant based eating.

Appreciate the options - Edit
I am the only vegan in my family so appreciate when we go to a place that has options for me. The menu was great. We were only having drinks and appetizers. I got the vegan mozzarella with raspberry jam and really likes it. The bartenders and staff were so kind and that really made for a great visit.

Sounded So Promising, But Was Disappointing - Edit
Driving up to New Hampshire my wife and I called for an order to pickup after she read me the four vegan sandwiches I was in love. I ordered the vegan Rueben and a side of fries. The fires were ice cold, but I could let that go as it was a to go order and it happens. But the sandwich was the real disappointment.
Read moreThe seitan pastrami had no flavor and was more or less mush, the cheese they used did not melt, the sauerkraut was very bland, and the bread was overcooked to almost burnt. The Russian dressing was decent, but if there are five ingredients in your sandwich and four sucked, then it sucked.
My wife was not as disappointed as I was, but did not enjoy her meal too much either.

It was really difficult to narrow down what I wanted to try on my one meal while traveling. I really wanted to try the seitan wings, but decided to get the Buddha Bowl with Add On Veggie Chickn’.

The seitan wings were AMAZING. The Reuben was also just perfect. I had the eggplant meal, should have gotten the sandwich. But the atmosphere is amazing and the service is good. Can't wait to go back and get another sandwich. Super vegan friendly, made sure all of our food was vegan, also said they cook things in separate fryers for the vegan food.

Best "chicken" sandwich ever - Edit
The Hollow has an amazing list of vegan options, and they are done well! The Tennessee hot chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious! I can't wait to go back for that. The vegan pulled pork was pretty good, too! No vegan dessert when we went but we hope to try that soon! Also the fried mozzarella in the spicy raspberry jam is pretty much the most brilliant thing I have ever tasted!

And amazing novel cocktails! First vegan French Onion soup I have ever come across and it was excellent. Have been to this restaurant several times and have never been disappointed. Their New Year’s Eve special vegan offerings were wonderful. Have tried their burger, seitan wings, Reuben etc, and all were very good. Death Wish coffee drink was fabulous and they had no issues with making it vegan. Love, love this place!

Somewhat disappointing first visit - Edit
I came here because I really appreciated the fact that that had a good amount of vegan dishes. I had the sweet potatoes and vegan wings. They were honestly not that great. The sweet potatoes really had no sweet potato flavor, they were too spicy also. I can handle a good amount of burn and all I really tasted was nearly unbearable heat with no flavor. The wings also were just alright, really pretty cheap and unhealthy tasting and not much like wings at all. I hope they improve these dishes a lot in the future. Maybe their others are better.

We started with the French onion soup—a first for us dining out because it usually is not vegetarian. The soup was very flavorful and gave us some seasoning ideas for when we next make it at home. The philly steak and tempeh Reuben were both very good and just a little messy. Fries were fine, salad a little plain given the upcharge.

Got the olive plate, hot seitan wings, tempeh Reuben and seitan phili cheesesteak. The wings needed more sauce and should have been spicier, the bread was burnt on the Reuben and the phili cheesesteak wasn’t reminiscent of a cheesesteak at all... that being said everything was still delicious and the minor issues can be overlooked because it was just a nice meal! First time here and will be back!
