Poor - Edit
We were really shocked and surprised at how poor our food was. Given all the positive reviews on here we expected the meal to be great, but it didn’t deliver.
Read moreThere are plenty of options on the menu and the guy serving us was nice enough, but the quality of the food was horrendous. I had the burger and my girlfriend the vegan chicken style balls with a stir fry. Everything was overly oily and greasy, the chips were clearly frozen chips whacked in the oven as opposed to hand cut chunky ones or skinny fries. I could only stomach about half of what I ordered as it was clearly very processed and made me feel sick.
Not to be gruesome or give too much information away but the food I ordered ended coming back up and has left me feeling very sick the next morning.
It was also very cold in there, we both had coats on to keep us warm, and the food took about 50 mins to arrive with no prior warning this would be the case. The place was stone dead too, so it’s not as if they can be excused for being overly busy.
There are so many places with great vegan options local, hearing of a hotel providing entirely veggie and mainly vegan menu we had high hopes but we definitely wouldn’t return.
Cons: Terrible quality food

Delicious food! - Edit
Absolutely delicious sweet and sour, wonderfully kind staff! A lovely rustic pub, perfect if you’re staying in the nearby campsite or walking in the area. Absolute must visit if you’re staying in Keswick

A lake district fave! - Edit
Second time we've been here! Always try and visit when in the lakes! Cute place, very friendly! The food is delicious and very reasonably priced compared to most places plus huge portions! Can't go wrong! I had the vegan chow mein and my partner had Szechuan balls!

Quirky, hospitable and tasty - Edit
The only fully veggie/vegan friendly hotel and restaurant bar in the Lake District. It has an unabashed quirky unpretentious vibe to it with nothing fancy but everything genuine. The menu is modest yet basic but also tasty and well portioned. There are stunning views from the hotel garden and bar plays great tunes from yesteryear. Worth popping into if you’re staying in the area. Oh and I hear they also host backgammon nights every other Sunday if you’re keen…

Vibes like no other - Edit
I’m a regular visitor to Heights Hotel Crag bar. Positioned amongst the hills with beautiful views across the beer garden, Heights has a low key informal bar that serves your standard vegan menu. I always go for the vegetable curry, with veg bhajis if I am super hungry - loaded with fresh veg and incredibly tasty.

The 70's Called with Great Vegan Food - Edit
When we come to the Lakes we always stay at Castlerigg and this vegan/vegetarian hotel is just outside the campsites. The fact it's stuck in 70s is part of its charm. Ignore the naysayers.
Read moreA great selection of vegan and vegetarian offerings including burgers, Indian, and Chinese options. Had a lovely Chinese meal whilst my partner had an Indian meal. Both were amazing and very filling. Service can be a little slow, but it's just a husband and his wife and it's obviously made fresh. The only downside of this is if the wife is not around they don't do food so if you're not in one of the campsites it's worth checking before making a trip to the hotel
Pros: Great selection of food, 70's charm

Much better than expected. - Edit
I'd read the reviews and was not surprised to see how dated the heights was. However it did not turn out that way. It wasn't too busy but was told I'd have a 40 minute wait. The food though was great. The table near us who were leaving told us it was worth the wait and they were right. The chap behind the bar was really nice. Played 70s music but I really enjoyed hearing some stuff I'd not heard for ages. The view from beer garden is stunning . The portions huge.

Food at the Heights / Crag Bar - Edit
We absolutely love this place. We have been visiting the Crag Bar for some years now and have never been disappointed, (well only when they've run out of the crispy veg duck). It is small, but cosy and this gives it it's character. Barry, the owner is always very friendly and a very nice fella. We often have the chow mein and a few extra bits. The chow mein is fantastic! Price-wise, very reasonable and the portions huge. Give it a go!

Disappointing - Edit
The bar is very, very dated and don't think it's been decorated since the 70's which is fine in itself but it felt very like a greasy spoon café rather than a nice cosy bar.
Read moreIt was freezing inside, so we didn't even take our coats off.
We ordered the vegan burger, which was supposed to be some kind of mushroom creation, but was in fact mashed potato (with possibly a little onion and 1/4 of a mushroom chopped up in there somewhere) that was shaped as a burger and fried! It was served in a bun with chips on the side...So basically our meal was potato in a bread bun served with potato!!!
There was no soap or hot water in the toilets.
The music was some kind of awful 70's instrumentals played way too loud.
Also there was only one person doing the bar and the restaurant orders and serving so we waited ages for our plate of carbs.
No wonder people think vegan food is bland and boring if this is the kind of food a veggie restaurant is serving.
Very disappointing, considering some of the amazing vegan food you can get when going out these days.
Cons: Awful music, Very cold and bland inside, Awful food

Awesome vegan burger! - Edit
I really, really enjoyed the home-made vegan burger I had there a few months ago, although I would have enjoyed a slightly bigger burger and fewer chips. It was so tasty, one of the best I've ever had. The non-vegan veggie burger option is only a Quorn burger though. My mum has also enjoyed eating there a few times, including the vegan casserole & the banana/apple fritters with vegan ice cream (I think Swedish Glace). It's really small, just a few tables (I think they have a garden area though, which I didn't go in), and a bit lacking in atmosphere, and some people go there just for drinks as it's a bar as well. So I felt a little awkward walking in and ordering, but I'm glad I did! It's a bit out of the way to get to on foot, but it's right next to two campsites and only a fairly short walk from the beautiful Castlerigg Stone Circle.
Read morePros: Tasty vegan food, including desserts, Friendly owners, Dog-friendly
Cons: Just 1 small bar room & not very atmospheric, Could have even more vegan options, They serve non-vegetarian alcohol

Let's do the Time Warp - Edit
This place does serve vegan food at fairly reasonable prices. Having said that, it has an intensely 70s atmosphere with a patterned carpet, "rustic" pub decor and Queen blaring on the stereo. The food I had was the sort of thing you would buy from a chip shop: the curry was a brown gloopy substance containing a lot of cumin and the sweet and sour "Chinese" dish was incredibly sugary. If all you want is basic vegan pub food this place is fine, but if you hate the 70s then stay away.

Cons: Damp, old-fashioned
