Lovely pub with plenty of vegan options.

Cosy English pub with a separate vegan menu. Really friendly waiting staff. I had the vegan burger, I really enjoyed it but it comes with a small salad and it would be much better if it was served with chips. A great option if you are looking for pub grub.

Pros: Separate vegan menu with plenty of choices. , Cosy, friendly pub., Friendly staff.

Traditional pub with vegan options

The Hanging Gate is in a pretty location just down the road from the centre of Belper. Inside, it has the look and feel of a typical country pub. Some (but not all) of the dining area has level access for those with mobility difficulties. Dogs are allowed in the outdoor seating area, and also one section indoors. We had to ask for the separate vegan menu, which offered a variety of choices for starters and mains, including falafel, soup, salad, curry, tart and burger dishes. It's part of the Vintage Inns chain, so the food is identical at each of their pubs. We thought the taste and quality was fairly decent, but nothing special. Clearly the focus here is on traditional meat-based pub grub, and so the slabs of chicken etc on plates all around us on a Sunday lunchtime was rather off-putting. Given that country pubs aren't usually renowned for their vegan offerings though, it's good to have a reasonable vegan dinner option in a place like this.

Pros: Nice country location, Dog friendly, Separate vegan menu with varied options

Cons: Mainly serves meat dishes, Chain of pub caterers
