Perfect for me

Popped in late afternoon for something that would keep me going for a few hours. Loved their version of vegan haggis. Tasty, substantial and with a vegan whisky and mustard sauce. Lovely to be in the Scottish Storytelling Centre building and avoid the chains.

Bad haggis

The vegan haggis here was disappointing - strangely sour and crumbly. If you’re visiting Scotland and want to try haggis, I wouldn’t recommend this one unfortunately

Pros: Vegan haggis available

Cons: Haggis was not very good

Disappointing

Went with some friends visiting Edinburgh who were keen to have some authentic haggis. One had meat and one had vegetarian and they said it was nice, but they may have just been polite! Vegan haggis was very dry, very little neeps and not much tatties either. Paid extra for the sauce but it was still so dry! £18 for haggis and a can of cider! Won't be back!

Unfortunately very dry haggis dish

Went here for lunch and did not like it very much.

As I visited Edinburgh I wanted to try some local food and was happy when I found this place that offered vegan haggis. Tried it and got it with mashed potato and what I think was mashed sweet potatoes and a whiskey/mustard sauce. Unfortunately I did not like it very much as it was way to try for me and would have preferred more sauce. Though I never had haggis before and therefore don't know this was a good representation.

Saw that there are other restaurants vers close by that also offer haggis and would suggest going there instead!

Tasty afternoon bite

This seemed like an excellent place to go to have... vegan haggis! We really wanted one with the whiskey sauce, and most places only serve that as the vegetarian option and not their vegan one.
It did not disappoint! The veggies on the bottom were very light and tasty, with a big dense vegan haggis ball on top. This gave it a really nice contrast. And the finishing touch really was the sauce. Glad we went here!

Pros: Tasty, Option for creamy whiskey sauce, Very nice staff

So disappointed

We went to this restaurant with some expectations based on the reviews here. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. Three of us took a vegan haggis : mashed turnip was really aqueous, the oranged-colored mash was tasteless and finally, the upper layer was dry and really spicy, killing all the flavour. And eating the three layer together was just a weird mix. Morevoer, the plate was so small, we all left with the hunger... I don't recommand even if the waiters were really nice.

Pros: Waiter

Cons: Taste, Size, Prize

Thank you for your review. There are lots of other vegan haggises out there, so hopefully you find another one you like. Every turnip has its own personality we have found so some take on water more than others. We do peel, chop & cook all our neeps in house. It doesn't happen often, but it could be that your batch wasn't seasoned properly.
If you are unhappy with your meal, please let a waiter know as they will be able to organise something with you on the day. We don't want anyone to leave disappointed.

Delicious traditional food

Tried haggis for the first time here and it was really tasty and comforting! Delicious and homecooked food vibes.
The restaurant is located on the busy Royal Mile street, but it was still peaceful and cozy inside. The staff was really nice and well aware about the vegan/vegetarian options. 5/5 star experience for us!

Best haggis neeps and tatties

The best one we tried. The sauce was sooo flavorful and delicious. It’s a great, reasonably priced, and authentic version of the non-vegan item.

Pros: Delicious

Thank you! I do think the vegan version is a pretty good dupe of the traditional one - it is pretty similar in texture and the pepperiness.

Vegan haggis!

Staff knew everything that was vegan vs vegetarian. Vegan haggis, neeps, tatties, and vegan whiskey sauce. I'm not going to crave it every day, but it was very tasty. A must-try for visitors.

Perfect place for a rainy day in Edinburgh!

I ventured to The Haggis Box on a rainy day, and it was the perfect place. Comfort food, a hands-on storytelling wall, and unique Scottish books. What more does one want on a rainy afternoon in Edinburgh, Scotland? Also, the vegan haggis was the most comforting meal I've had throughout my entire European trip.

VEGAN HAGGIS - lentil "meat mixture" on top of mashed regular and sweet potatoes on a bed of whiskey and mustard gravy.

Once the haggis was placed in front of me, I received a light, airy fragrance of mustard. I don't think I've ever had anything quite like this dish. It warmed my soul. The portion was generous. I'm not a huge fan of lentils, but it didn't taste like lentils. The mashed potatoes were smooth and fluffy. The sauce was rich and bold.

The only negatives were that the haggis ate a little salty, and I would have loved more sauce. The potatoes did a great job of soaking it up. You could order extra sauce on the side, but I didn't feel like spending more money.

Tasty and filling! 10£ each including your choice of sauce (only one of them vegan though). Very fair price cause of the location etc. Worth a visit!

Typical scottish food

The Haggis Box is a little restaurant in the beautiful John Knox House. The menue has traditional Haggis, a vegetarian and a vegan version, as well a soup of the day, a Breakfast roll, Quiche and Porridge. We came for the vegan Haggis with Whisky-Mustard sauce. It was delicious! The staff is really friendly and the food came fast. Super place!

Giving vegans the Scottish experience!

How cool is that, getting to try a traditional Scottish dish as a vegan version? Taste wise it’s nothing special though but it’s just worth the experience. Also, it comes with a whiskey-mustard sauce which is a really interesting combination.

Pros: Veganes Haggis zum Probieren, Freundlicher Service, Take Away

Cons: Preislich etwas hoch, Öffnungszeiten für Dinner unpassend

Thank you! The vegan haggis is made from lentils, polenta, gluten-free oats, carrot turnip, mushroom, kidney beans and a peppery seasoning like the traditional haggis.
