A fresh take on a Welsh classic - Edit
The Gaff has a sizeable vegan menu, and plenty of vegetarian options, too. They recommend you have 3-4 small plates per person; I'd say five between two of you would be enough. My (vegetarian) partner had burrata (wrongly listed on the vegan menu, but also misspelled, so maybe they cancel each other out), new potatoes and an elaborate concoction of asparagus, wild mushrooms and Welsh truffles. I had green beans on broad bean hummus, bang-bang cauliflower and Cajun fries. These latter were perhaps a modern take on a classic Welsh dish: chips with curry sauce (I was going to ask "is that Irish curry sauce?", but then I remembered I was in Abergavenny, not Brynmawr). All in all, it was pretty good - especially the bang-bang. And the hummus.
Read moreI had a pint of Wye Valley's very acceptable Hopfather, but then I made the mistake of looking at the wine list. Plenty of interesting choices: a torrontes, a viognier, and a tannat/merlot blend. I had to have a glass of that; unfortunately, it was more merlot than tannat. But a great meal and I'll go again.
Pros: Good, varied vegan selection - no burgers, Fresh local and seasonal produce, Ambitious flavours
