Burrito redemption - Edit
Update 2021:
Read moreOkay, so I went back...and this time the breakfast burrito was amazing! No tofu water under or in the burrito. Perfect tortilla. Potato's on the side were great. They were taking appropriate precautions distancing guests and had plexiglass separating tables.
Original review Sep 2019:
Did no one train the cook to press the water out of tofu? Not sure what the problem could have been besides that, but I had to eat my burrito with a fork due to how badly it was dripping liquid. There was already a puddle underneath the burrito when it was brought out. I was so disappointed, I only ate half and left.

Vegan BRUNCH!!!! - Edit
Love me some good vegan brunch. Very cute and quirky environment and friendly waitstaff. The tofu scramble fills you up and is pretty dang good. It has vegan cheese so its cheesy and has tons of veggies and the home fries are delicioussss. They have so many other options but I am also gluten free so this was one of the few gluten feee vegan options. Would definitely recommend!

Several Vegan Options - Edit
A good amount of options though some are not great. Go for the variety, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Read moreThe burger with vegan cheese is really good, but pricey. Mac & cheese is not great but I haven't tasted a good vegan version anywhere. I really like the banana pancakes but wouldn't say they're great. The tacos are decent. I haven't tried other options.
Pros: Good variety, Breakfast, lunch & dinner options
Cons: Expensive, Hit or miss

Cow cheese on vegan tacos - Edit
Ordered their Impossible Meat tacos. They said they don’t use Impossible Meat anymore and could sub it with Beyond Meat which is fine. I double checked the dish was vegan.
Read moreFood comes out cold after 15 minutes and I have a couple bites. There’s shredded cheese on the tacos. I ask if it’s vegan cheese and the waiter says he’ll check with the waiter. It’s cow cheese. Not returning.
No point in offering a vegan menu if the food you bring out is not vegan.
Pros: Handful of “vegan“ dishes , Manager was apologetic
Cons: Doesn’t respect vegan preferences , Unprofessional service

Fantastic - Edit
Terrific vegan options for breakfast. I love breakfast. Two of us had the vegan breakfast burrito and one had the John Scrambo veganized. Plenty of options for breakfast and lunch.

It’s ok - Edit
It’s not horrible, there’s few vegan options but the ones they do have aren’t great. Most of them are mediocre but the vegan pancakes are really bad. I come here with non vegan friends if they do not want to go to a vegan restaurant because it’s easy to get to.

Great Decor, Not So Great Food - Edit
Friendly Toast is iconic. We've been to the back bay location, cambridge, and even Portsmouth NH. It's a place we know we'll find vegan options.
Read moreThat being said, the food is just really not good when compared with the many other vegan options in the area. Veggie burgers are usually dry, there is something weird about the mac and cheese. Maybe the non-vegan options are just amazing and I'll never know. Vegan options ARE clearly labeled which is always welcome, I just wish there was a little more in the way of flavor and balance within the options themselves.
Pros: Clear labeling, Plenty of vegan options
Cons: A little on the pricey side, Not the greatest food

Awesome place! Lots of vegan and vegetarian options! - Edit
Great customer service and atmosphere. Food and service were wonderful.
Read moreThe staff was very knowledgeable and the menu offers lots of vegan options. Staff is also sensitive about food allergies and always check with the kitchen.
Breakfast all day (vegan pancakes, tofu scramble) and lots of vegan plates (wraps, burritos, bowls and more) so vegans will be in heaven. Definitely check them out if you are in Portsmouth, you won’t be disappointed.
Comfort food at its best!
Pros: Everything!

Awesome food and great decor! - Edit
I stopped for brunch at The Friendly toast on a weekend trip to Boston and it was a great experience.
Read moreThe place is very inviting with great 50s style decor and wacky colors. Staff is very friendly, and even when the place is packed they are speedy and attentive. The menu. while not vegan or vegetarian by any stretch, is very ample and does feature a surprising number of labeled vegan options.
I ordered the vegan tofu wrap and a slice of their cinnamon raisin bread. The wrap was a good size and came warm, accompanied by a small salad, and filled with quinoa, veggies, and tofu. The filling was well seasoned and not overly greasy. The slice of bread was sadly white as opposed to whole wheat, but still tasty. It came warm and toasted.
I would definitely recommend this spot and I myself look forward to returning and trying out more of the vegan items on their menu. Yes vegan pancakes, I'm looking at you.
Pros: Good food, Vegan options on the menu, Great Service
Cons: Crowded

Mediocre veggie food - Edit
I was thrilled they have a number of vegetarian dishes, but have gone twice and been disappointed both times -- food didn't have a lot of flavor (though it's fresh and cooked well).

Cute vibe. Meh food. - Edit
We had home fries, tofu scramble, chili. All pretty unimpressive, especially for the price. The bread was good.

Wish it had more vegan options - Edit
I wish this place had more vegan options but they're very good about veganizing the vegetarian options. I love the atmosphere and the staff has always been friendly and helpful. My favorite plate to get is the Kates Scramble, without the vegetarian sausage (it's not vegan) or the cheese and toast. They replace the toast with a bagel that IS vegan. It's a great dish.

Cons: not that vegan friendly, bit pricey

Great atmosphere, few vegan options - Edit
This place has a very interesting kitsch decor and is very popular, so you may be up for a long wait during peak times (especially Sunday brunch). They have very few on-the-menu vegan options (only 2 on my last check), which don't appeal to me, but they can do off-menu substitutions and after I discovered the tasty "vegan-version Guy Scramble" (a tofu scramble with avocado and nice seasonings, with home fries), I started to like it better.
Read moreIf you make brunch plans with vegan-hostile omnivores, this is a good choice, but if your friends are vegan-friendly, much better options exist, especially True Bistro (Sat/Sun all-vegan brunch) in Somerville or Veggie Planet (Sunday all-vegetarian brunch with good vegan options) or Veggie Galaxy (breakfast-anytime diner with lots of vegan options) in Cambridge; Veggie Galaxy is not far from The Friendly Toast, maybe 1-1.5 miles (a long walk or short drive).
They have an interesting cocktail menu.
Pros: great atmosphere, friendly staff, vegan-version Guy Scramble
Cons: very few vegan options

Good food. Popular, long wait - Edit
Went here when we visited Boston. Had a long wait, even in the summer time when campuses are emptier. Had a few options. I got a good hash brown scramble. Interior is tacky 50-esque, but good if you like that sort of place.
