We've visited a couple of times now. This is a well positioned cafe that seems to be busy at all times. There are outside tables, although these are next to the main road.
The first visit we made was for breakfast. We had high hopes with the wait for a table. The food was nice, portion sizes were modest and we left feeling it was just ok.
We visited again with friends at their request. This time round, we weren't pleased to see items like sausage rolls on open display. Something to note if you prefer not to see that sort of thing. On arrival we were told there would be a 10 minute wait for a table. This turned into 20 minutes. Once seated, we ordered food about 10 minutes later, which took a further 45 minutes to arrive. The drinks did appear sooner.
The smoothie and coffee were lovely. The fruit tea had some bits of fruit in the teapot, which blocked the spout and caused the tea to go everywhere on pouring. With the staff being so busy, there was no-one to ask for napkins to mop up the spillage. On reflection, the fruit seems an unnecessary contrivance in a place where the staff have too much work to do to notice what's happening with the customers.
The vegan cheese toasties were essentially vegan cheese and chutney in toast. The cheese had not been melted. This is tricky with vegan cheese but is possible, usually by way of a minute under the grill! The bean salad was pleasant but beetroot is an acquired taste and less of that would have been preferable. The falafel flatbread was easily the best dish ordered, with a balanced mix of flavours. The chips were pleasant but a modest portion. However, they were necessary as the medium sliced bread toastie alone would be insufficient as a meal for my 6ft partner.
Overall, the food was fine. The service was also just ok, with none of the staff appearing interested in the customer experience. Clearly they have been taught the basics but beyond that, noticing the time customers have been waiting and acknowledging anything beyond whether the food was ok, was missing.
If you're in Sherwood with time on your hands and stuck for somewhere to go, the Crimson Tree is ok. I wouldn't make a trip especially to go there though!
